"An unmanned probe fires sampling rockets at the Moon's surface to test its structure and composition. Note the antennae for sending data back to Earth. In the background another probe takes off after having made a soft landing on the Moon's surface. (Martin Information Services)"
The book presents the best information, ideas and assumptions on the conquest of the moon as of 1958. The authors, who were experts on missiles and space flight, tell how the moon would be approached, first with instrumented probes and then with man himself as a payload. Fascinating conjectures, based on the latest scientific findings, show what life on the moon might be like, how men would build a base there, how they would explore the moon, and how they would push on from there to further explorations of outer space.

John Carter of Mars is the eleventh and final book in the Barsoom series by Edgar Rice Burroughs. It is not actually a novel but rather a collection of two John Carter of Mars stories.
The first story was originally published in 1940 by Whitman as a Better Little Book entitled John Carter of Mars. Although credited to Edgar Rice Burroughs, it was written (and illustrated) by his son, John Coleman Burroughs and was later expanded and re-published in Amazing Stories as "John Carter and the Giant of Mars", the name it goes under in the collection.
The second story, "Skeleton Men of Jupiter", was first published in Amazing Stories in 1943. Intended as the first in a series of novelettes to be later collected in book form, in the fashion of Llana of Gathol, it ends with the plot unresolved, and the intended sequels were never written. Several other writers have written pastiche endings for the story.
The first edition of John Carter of Mars (a title that Burroughs never actually used for any book in the Barsoom series) was published in 1964 by Canaveral Press, fourteen years after Burroughs's death.

My second female Transformer! Arcee is great in the Transformers: Prime show. I wonder if Hasbro will give her the Voyager Class treatment somewhere down the track.

Caravanning & Camping Out by J. Harris Stone
The author was the founder of The Caravan Club, in 1907. It's a very readable book, and depicts the very earliest days of caravanning when they were towed by horses and only a few hundred people (if that) had one. These early caravans bore most resemblance to the romanticised images of gypsy caravans of the past, although some looked like cottages on wheels! It's a fascinating read, and there are plenty of pictures. It evokes a lot of nostalgia for a time when there were almost no cars on the road and caravans like this could meander about the countryside and stop anywhere.
The book is old enough that there is no date in anywhere, so I searched about the net to find out about it. Google was in fact unsuccessful - it came up with a few reference to the revised 1931 edition, and an American 1914 edition, but not the one I have. To the British Library! After a few searches there, I pinned it down. It's a first edition, 1913, published by Herbert Jenkins, London (the publisher I knew, but not the date). This is the only reference I've been able to find to this edition on the net. Given that the few references to the 1931 edition I've seen are quoting $70-90 and the 1914 American editions are quoting $100 - $250, I would imagine this one is significantly more valuable... It's in pretty good condition too (although, having said that, one edge of the spine cloth has split from opening it to take the pictures :( oops! It was pretty fragile. It's detached all along the top edge. It would have happened when reading anyway I suppose). Also, it looks more green than blue to me, but it's hard to tell - it's faded a lot.
The text itself is out of copyright, and can be read in full here.
This guy has a pretty awesome transformation sequence - great engineering. I'm not a huge fan of Bayformers (the Michael Bay movie version of The Transformers), but I really like the Transformers: Prime show. It seems to strike a nice balance between Bayformers and G1.
I'm glad Hasbro made this Voyager Class version of Optimus, because I really didn't like the design of the Deluxe Class one... Still waiting for Megatron!
Nick Charles is an alcoholic former private detective who retired when he married Nora, a wealthy Nob Hill heiress. Hammett reportedly modeled Nora on his longtime partner Lillian Hellman, and the characters' boozy, flippant repartee on their relationship. (The novel also mentions that Nick was once a Pinkerton detective, as was Hammett.)
The novel is considered one of the seminal texts of the hard-boiled subgenre of mystery novels, but the chief innovation distinguishing it from previous Hammett works such as "The Maltese Falcon" or "The Glass Key" was its relative lightness and humor. It is nearly as much a comedy of manners as a mystery, and the story tumbles along to the sarcastic banter of Nick and Nora as a reluctant and jaded Nick is dragged into solving a sensational murder, cheered on by the fascinated thrill-enjoying Nora.

“The Blue Poetry Book” was Andrew Lang's first and only “colored” book of poetry. It collects nearly 150 poems by masters such as Blake, Wordsworth, Scott, Longfellow, Burns, Byron, Shakespeare, Poe, Marlowe, Coleridge, Milton, Macaulay, among others. The poems are accompanied by 100 black and white illustrations by Henry J. Ford and Lancelot Speed.
Andrew Lang (1844 -1912) was a Scots poet, novelist, literary critic, and contributor to the field of anthropology. He is best known as a collector of folk and fairy tales and for his twelve “colored” fairy books, published between 1889 and 1910. Each volume is distinguished by its own color, beginning with “The Blue Fairy Book” (1889) and ending with “The Lilac Fairy Book” (1910). In all, 437 tales from a broad range of cultures and countries are presented. The series was immensely popular, helped by Lang's reputation in folklore, and by the packaging device of the uniform books. The series proved of great influence in children's literature, increasing the popularity of fairy tales over tales of real life.

The Silver Tassie was Seán O’Casey’s fourth play and was basically an attack on imperialist wars. In 1928 he submitted it to the Abbey Theatre, Dublin, whose director, WB Yeats, rejected it because it ‘wasn’t suitable’. O'Casey was deeply offended, not least because a couple of his earlier plays – in particular Juno and the Paycock – had saved the Abbey from bankruptcy. As a result of this rejection, O’Casey declared literary war on Yeats and moved to England, where he spent the rest of his life.
This is a rare 1928 first edition of the play, with torn page edges, published by Macmillan and Co Limited, St Martin’s Street, London, and printed by R&R Clark Limited of Edinburgh. It’s dedicated ‘to Eileen with the daffodils in the green vase’. This was Eileen Reynolds, a young actress who later became O’Casey’s wife – and according to her obituary in The Times, theirs was ‘one of the most contented home lives in literary history'.
The writing automaton is the most complex of the three automata built by Jacquet-Droz between 1768 and 1774. Using internal clockwork gears, it is able to write any custom text up to 40 letters long. The text is coded on a wheel where characters are selected one by one. It uses a goose feather to write, which it inks from time to time, including a shake of the wrist to prevent ink from spilling. Its eyes follow the text being written, and the head moves when it takes some ink.
