Oddly this illustration depicts a long-toothed creature, the predecessor to Dracula?

“Under the Sunset” is the author’s first book and features eight grim fairy tales by Bram Stoker who, fifteen years later, would spawn one of the most enduring literary bloodsuckers, Count Dracula. The tales in Stoker’s first book are “Under the Sunset,” “The Rose Prince,” “The Invisible Giant,” “The Shadow Builder,” “How 7 Went Mad,” “Lies and Lilies,” “The Castle of the King,” and “The Wondrous Child.” The stories are illustrated with six aquatints and ten wood engravings by W. Fitzgerald and W. V. Cockburn.

Fred Freeman (1907-1988) was a graphic artist who designed and illustrated books on naval history, space exploration and other subjects. He was a successful commercial artist in New York City from the late 1920's through the 30's, doing many illustrations and magazine covers for publications including The Saturday Evening Post and Collier's.

After serving in the United States Navy during World War II, he turned mainly to book design and illustration. He illustrated books on submarines and destroyers from World War II, for the United States Naval Institute. In 1956, with Theodore Roscoe, he designed the ''Picture History of the U.S. Navy,'' published by Charles Scribner's Sons. In 1960, he illustrated a children's book, ''First Men to the Moon,'' written by the scientist, Werner von Braun.

Tell It All Brother

First Edition

Reprise 6412

1970

I was lucky to be visiting the Linnean Society of London during the week when the subject for our Assignment52 weekly challenge was "Books". The Society has a library practically exploding at the seams with wonderful old books, so the problem was deciding which books would be the best to photograph. During my pondering it suddenly struck me that the library would certainly have a first edition of Charles Darwin's "Origin of Species" - and that if I begged to the right people, I might be lucky enough to get permission to photograph the legendary pivotal book of evolutionary biology.

So here you have it, four shots taken of the first edition: the exterior; the famous "Tree of Life" (the only image in the book); a close-up of the leaves of the book; and the irrefutable proof that it is the first edition (nowhere does it actually say "First Edition" as the publishers were not intending on printing further editions!).

The A. C. Gilbert Company was once one of the largest toy companies in the world. Alfred Carlton Gilbert (1884-1961) founded the company in 1909 as a company that provided supplies to magic shows. Then, in 1911, Gilbert invented the Erector Set and introduced it two years later. Beginning in 1922, A. C. Gilbert made chemistry sets and other sets for budding scientists. Microscope kits came in 1934, then a line of inexpensive reflector telescopes. In 1938, Gilbert purchased the American Flyer, a struggling manufacturer of toy trains. Gilbert re-designed the entire product line, producing 1:64 scale trains running on O gauge track. After WWII, Gilbert introduced S gauge model railroad kits. Although these new trains were popular, Lionel outsold American Flyer nearly 2 to 1. Once the largest employer in New Haven, Connecticut, the Gilbert Company struggled after the death of its founder in 1961 and went out of business in 1967. American Flyer was sold to Lionel. The brand name on its Erector Set and microscope products was retained by subsequent manufacturers. [Source: Wikipedia]

Published by William Heinemann in 1952.

The book was written in 1950, the same year that Nevil Shute emigrated to Australia. It contrasts the bleakness of post-war London and Britain with the bright, expansive lifestyle of Australia, where food is plentiful and the landscape is awe-inspiring.
