Nelson Trepanier was born on January 10, 1880 and died in 1944. He was the fifth of eleven children, one daughter died in infancy. Nelson’s parents Joseph and Alphozine Baskey were married in 1869 and raised their family on “Riverview Farm” in Flinton. The farm is still in the family.
There is a story about the surname. Some are called Baskey, but others like Nelson went by Trepanier. It is believed the change came about after Eugenie, the wife of Nelson’s older brother discovered, while following a genealogy, the the French name for Baskey (Basket?) was Trepanier.
Nelson married Clara Lessard on January 13, 1913. They raised seven children on the family farm. Nelson farmed and was very good to animals; he and Clara like to dance; and Nelson bought the first car in Flinton - proudly pictured here.

This is the Fiat Panda 1000S that I owned sometime 1989/90. It was my first car and I was 18 or 19 years old. This is scanned photo.
I'd forgotten that I'd made quite a few modifications.
- The alloys were from a Fiat X1/9 - these were readily available at the time from breakers.
- I think I'd already fitted the SPAX lowering springs at this point - they lowered the suspension by about 1".
- The exhaust was replaced with a ANSA sports unit - it had a very subdued note to it. Nothing like the boys of today in their cars.
- The lights are Cibie units, 2 fogs and 2 driving beams. Cutting holes in the bumper took some commitment to do.
- The rear Panda 1000S badge was removed. Not sure why I did this!
- The rear third brake light was a fog lamp with half the surface taped over as it was too bright otherwise.
According to the online car tax checker its last tax disc expired 1/11/2000.
Date of first registration was 29/2/1988.

Im Vergleich zu Daimlers 4- rädrigen Motor-kutsche, 1886, gilt diese Entwicklung als neue Form der Fortbewegung.
Der Ingenieur und Automobilkonstrukteur Carl Friedrich Benz gründete 1883 die Firma Benz & Cie., Rheinische Gasmotorenfabrik, die sich 1926 mit der Daimler-Motoren-Gesellschaft zur Daimler-Benz AG zusammentat.
Carl Benz hat vieles, was damals auf dem Markt der Ingenieurskunst angedacht oder bereits verfügbar war, zusammengefasst und für sein Ziel genutzt. So war die Lenkung damals hinreichend nur über ein Vorderrad möglich, weshalb also ein dreirädriges "Veloziped" das erste Automobil wurde.
5 Personen sind Paten des Automobiles.
Otto und Maybach gelten als Motorentwickler,
Benz und Daimler als Erfinder des Autos.
Bertha Benz finanzierte den Entstehungs-prozess des "automobiles". Damit ist seine Frau Bertha Benz Inhaberin des Patentrechtes des ersten Automobiles.

Das Patent für dieses Dreiradfahrzeug wurde von Benz am 29. Januar 1886 eingereicht und als DRP Nr. 37435 am 2. November 1886 erteilt. Am 3. Juli 1886 führte Benz die erste öffentliche Probefahrt in Mannheim durch.
Angelassen wurde der Motor durch beherztes Drehen des Schwungrades.
Dass der Treibstoffvorrat im Vergaser nicht für eine längere Strecke reichte, stört beim Benz Patent-Motorwagen nicht weiter.
Höchstgeschwindigkeit: ~ 16 km/h
Leergewicht: 265 kg
Immerhin brauchte der Antrieb des Fahrzeugs auf 100 Kilometer rund 10 Liter des seinerzeit noch immer als gefährlich geltenden Ligroins.
Spätere Messungen der Technischen Hochschule Stuttgart ergaben 0,9 PS/662 W bei 400 Umdrehungen.
Der Wagen blieb ein Einzelstück, ebenso wie sein direkter Nachfolger Patent-Motorwagen Nummer 2.
Er wurde zunächst zum Vierradwagen umgebaut und später ausgeschlachtet.
1903 wurde er rekonstruiert. Dieser Benz Patent Motor-Wagen Nr.1 steht heute im Verkehrszentrum des Deutschen Museums in München

Strangely enough - a neighbor across the street took this picture. She saw a rare sight. All three of us (my brother & sister) were at home and our cars were parked on the street together. This picture is an oldie but a goodie. My sister was the only one that had a brand new car - my brother and I had bought older used models. This picture is nostalgic for me, bringing back lots of memories of friends and family.

My son Christopher's first car is this little 1992 Renault 5, bought locally for £300 in December 2008. This picture outside the Old Oak, Arlesey, was one of his first outings, before driving home to Stoke-on-Trent the next day. The car is still going strong, almost two years later.
My first car as a 17 year old. My Mom paid $200. for this in 1988 as a surprise for me one day after school. It smoked like a chimney because the rings were shot and my Dad (mostly) and I rebuilt the motor. I eventually blew the engine on the freeway as I forgot to put in oil. I was always giving rides to car-less and money-less friends who always had cigarettes despite not having money for gas for a thirsty V-8. They'd offer cigarettes instead.....I' d ask them to light it before they put it in the tank. Sold it to a recycler for $35.00......and monopolized my parents cars!
Our first car was like a family member to us. To sell it was one of the hardest decisions we've ever made...
We still keep a photo of "Clio" and the Simpsons air fresheners that hung there on our shelf...
You were a great car and a dear friend. We really miss you!

My First car...
a 1968 1500 beetle, with pre '67 panels, lowered, de-chromed, upgraded to 1600cc when the engine partially seized on the M11 :(
painted Ferrari Fly Yellow (it's the colour behind the prancing horse on the ferrari badge), with a royal blue interior and engine. I filled a little yellow rubber duck with resin and made it into a gear-knob and got my mum to embroider a little rubber ducky on the driver's door panel.
If I got to do it all again, I don't think I'd have ever gotten rid of it. In a perfect world, I'd still have him now, eleven years later :)

Info: photos sent in by readers of their first cars. They're for use in the Auto Show sections in late Feb/early March, J. Kroll says Most, if not all, will be of low quality, but I'm told (by Jean Dubail) that this is OK.
My first car was a Mercedes Benz- a stocky 1966 four door sedan, with a pile of mileage on it. I was a university student, and I picked it up for almost nothing, but then again it didn't look like it was worth much. It took weeks of scrubbing before I even knew that the upholstery was blue. The ignition didn't work, someone had created a push button bypass that I thought was totally cool. It was also a standard, and although I had taken one lesson in driving a standard a couple of years before, I needed some lessons in driving it. I was pretty good on hills though, my instructor had parked me on one, and then demanded I give him my watch. He stepped out of the car and told me he had placed it 18 inches from the back tire, and I would now learn to get up a hill, or else! So I learned. I drove this car for a year or so, and I loved it, until it needed more work, and I couldn't afford it. I placed an ad in the paper and a young guy showed up to take a look at it. It was dark out, and the car wasn't running well at all, and I didn't think he'd be interested. He popped up the hood, and a big toad was sitting on the engine ! We shooed him away, and the guy reached in, in the darkness, made a few quick adjustments, and that car of mine just purred. Turns out his dad owned a Mercedes dealership, and he knew his way around them. I sold him my car, and he promised to let me know if he got it fixed up. He did - painted it baby blue, and told me it was in such rough shape I'm lucky I didn't crash through the floorboards while driving it! I was happy it had gone to a good home. I found this receipt when I was going through my boxes of "stuff". Don't think I ever took a photo of the car!
It was the summer of 1969. I just turned 21 going into my senior year of college. After working the summer at the Chevy engine plant in Flint, MI I could afford to buy my own car. It was 6 years old and cost $450 but I was as proud as could be. Mine was white and didn't look this good but other than that it was the same as this. Ahhh memories. I traded it in March, 1971 on a Nova. I would love to have that car back.

I scanned in this old picture of my first car. 1987 Firebird. Got it a few months after I turned 15 with 87k miles on it. When I sold it, it had 215k miles. Never gave me a bit of trouble and started my love for Fbodies. Even if it was slower then a semi on the highway. :D
This was my first car--VW Rabbit. Not the original paint job, obviously. It was supposed to be Navy Blue & Gold, but ended up being more Royal Blue and Yellow. Oh well.
