3 February 2020. Driving from Canberra to the Coast. Fires raged through here just 3 weeks ago. The main road down which I drove was closed for more than 3 weeks. After the fires moved on there was much work to clear the roads, cut down burnt out trees, replace guard rails and signs, and so on. The fires are still burning - just a little further down the coast. An area three times the size of Belgium has been burnt completely. Ferns are reshooting. Resilient! And some leaves are sprouting. Some trees were cut down because they were too unstable to leave standing. All trees to be cut down were marked with pink paint so that the workers coming behind knew what stayed and what had to come down.
