Due to the cooler weather we've had in Chicago over the last few days, I floated the idea of a small bonfire to my family. During the fire, my 7 year old was shining his led flashlight around our deck and for a split second the beam of light grazed the fire logs. Immediately, the blue-cast of the light contrasted with the deep Orange/Amber of the embers and my photographically-obsessed alter ego (who until that point had remained stranely quiet) took over. "Hey buddy, let me see that flashlight..."
Then for the next 2 hours I played with fire...in almost precisely the exact way I tell my kids NOT to...picking up hot logs, sticking my hands much to close to the flames, flipping over branches, sticking still-green branches into the flames to generate smoke...you get the idea.
Throughout it all, I was testing the effect of the slightly blue flashlight on the logs, embers and smoke. While I found sooo many variables that affected the final image, the most prominent and highest impacting aspect of the image creation process was simply the length of time I allowed the flashlight to shine on the smoke and logs- too long it would appear white in the final rendering, too short and the light wouldn't appear at all. A handful turned out but this was my favorite. Hope you like it as well.
When I was 18 a foster child set fire to our home. I was upstairs and heard the smoke alarm go off, I came running down to find the living room ablaze and my sister and the little girl frozen in panic. I got them out (and the dog and budgie) and thought I could put it out (no heroics must have been adrenaline as I can't believe now what I tried unsuccessfully to do!) I fetched the hose and failed to attach it to the tap so soaked towels and tried putting out parts like that. The fire crew turned up and by now the downstairs was completely gutted and the fire had reached the top of the stairs.
I was taken to hospital as I had burns over most of me the worst on my hand (none of which I was aware of)
The next day I was front page of our local paper because the fire alarm had saved my life.
We lost everything material in that fire (what the fire didn't destroy the heat and smoke did) Thankfully we were insured and everything replaced.
The secret is I don't tell anyone how scared of fire I actually am.
I'm sure this doesn't read very well but hope if it does one thing it makes those that view it check your smoke alarms or install them and make sure you have insurance.

Andover Apartment Fire & Aftermath. This fire started at the Andover Apartments just across the border from Maumee in Toledo. Several agencies including Maumee Police/Fire reponded to assist. A total of 3 buildings burned which is 35 Aparmtent Units unfortunately displacing dozens of residents. No one was injured or killled thankfully. The high winds defintly contributed to the fire spreading as fast as it did. This complex is located off Eastgate Road.

A daycare center that fortunately was closed turned into an all nighter for B.F.D companies 1, 2, 3 , Truck 1 and Rescue 2. The alarm was transmitted at about 3:00 A.M
Photo was taken from the Alpha / Delta corner of building 2 after fire had already had it's way with another 2500 sq ft, one story structure.
An unexpected fire show on my way home - a straw stack chatched fire in this freezing cold. Jumped out of the car with my trusted Leica of course...
This is a shot of the lesser know cousin of the Silver Surfer.
Actually, I was trying to create some interesting abstracts of our campfire. This is the result of an 8 second exposure shot while pointing at the campfire and moving the camera around, spinning it, whatever. In this case, I was trying to create an "X" in the frame with a spinning ball of flame in the middle. Obviously the photo above isn't even close to what I envisioned, but growing up around a lot of skiers, this looks like a person hitting the moguls and thus the title was born.
Primera foto oficial de mis vacaciones. Reconozco que tengo un poco de piromana en el interior. Me encantan las fogatas... puedo estar horas quemando palitos y mirando el danzar de las llamas. Creo que siempre han tenido un efecto hipnotico en mi...desde que tengo uso de razón. Recuerdo a los 7 años estar en la isla de Chiloé cuidando una fogatita que quería morir producto de la lluvia y aunque toda mi familia me dijiera que se hiba a apagar yo no me rendí... y no se apago.
En estas vacaciones estuvimos en un camping en el sur de Chile que me permitió hacer casi todos los días una fogata. Ya sea para cocinar, como para calentarse en la fría noche de la región de la araucanía. Yo feliz todas las noches..

I was experimenting with the Sony Cybershot to see the difference using or surpressing the flash can make taking night shots...see the adjacent pic of this same fire with the flash turned on...

The other day I did my first self portrait. Mainly i didnt have anybody to shoot and wanted to try some lighting techniques. I wanted to get the light to mainly surround me. It worked for the most part. did a bit of pp work to help that out.
The texture is just a shot of grass desaturated and with the brightness bough right up.
Feel free to add notes etc if you have something to add.

I have been hard at work continuing to scan slides from Peter Roberts's archives - in fact, I have recently passed the 4000 mark, and I have now scanned more of his slides than I have of my own ! I am having a short pause now, to take stock and sort out some queries, but I thought I would share a few that have come out of the woodwork that aren't your usual bus and coach fayre ....
Peter and a few friends were driving over to north Wales for a day out, and I think he said they were making for Tom Hollis at Queensferry as their first stop, when they came across this wagon on its way east into Cheshire, which had somehow set itself on fire. So as they were all armed with their cameras, they stopped for a few pictures - but why did none of them think of taking any selfies ? 'Cos this was the 1960s, and the world was a better place ....
More excitement to follow !
