On the 13th day of Christmas .. 6th of January (formerly a holy day called "Epiphania" that marked the baptism of Christ) it is custom in Iceland to build bonfires and sing elf songs. According to legend on this day seals shed their skin and cows can talk like humans.
Vincent spitting fire during last week's fire light painting photo session!
We organized a little light painting evening with fire last week. We had 3 jugglers (including one fire spitter) and 3 photographers, all equipped with SLRs and tripods.
The idea of the evening was to do some light painting with fire.
Benoit, Julian and myself were taking photos, and Olivier, JB and Vincent were juggling. The evening was really nice, we spent 2 hours shooting in different configurations, we had some really nice results as well. The thing with fire is that you don't control it as much as normal flash lights when doing light painting, so the pictures are a bit less prepared than our previous light painting experiments. But the texture of the fire is really really cool.
This one is not a light painting photo per say cause the exposure time was around 1/1000th of a second only in order to freeze the fire shot in the air.
But we did many photos that lasted around 5 to 30 seconds depending on what we wanted to achieve. I've posted another one to show the kind of things we did.
Quite happy with how things turned out, we all had fun and went away with fairly nice photos, next time I'd like to try and "build" scenes a little more, perhaps with several light sources.
Enjoyed this one, I had just put a log on the fire causing some sparks to be emitted from the embers.

On the commute home from work, I saw a fire glowing some distance from Ventura. I'd like to say I had a premonition, but it was plain obvious that this fire would be serious. I hung out by the radio for the next two hours and started packing. When I looked outside a few hours later and saw the fireglow in not one, but two directions, it was time to leave. Figuring the freeway would be jammed, I found the side streets became a hazard of their own with the power out. I couldn't stop looking back at the fire, so I parked near the harbor to take some photos until the emotions caught up with me. I drove on to work at 1am and slept in my car.
(My apartment and property were unharmed, as was much of downtown Ventura. That outcome didn't seem likely as the fire loomed above us the first night. There but for the grace of God - many areas of the city and county weren't as lucky.)
1,000 acre brush fire started near the Etiwanda Nature Preserve at Decliff Dr and Etiwanda Avenue in the city of Rancho Rancho Cucamonga. The fire burned westward towards Miliken Avenue threatening over 1,600 homes, including Los Osos High School and damaging one home. 700 personnel including 55 engines, 19 crews, 4 dozers and 6 water tenders battled this fire at its peak. Due to wind gusts at 70-80 mph aircraft were not able to battle this fire.
On Nov 8, 2018 at approximately 2PM a brush fire, driven by high Santa Ana winds, broke out in Ventura County which grew to impact Los Angeles County and the City of Los Angeles. As of Nov 10, 2018 7:00AM the fire continues to burn with 0% containment. The latest incident information for the City of Los Angeles is available at www.lafd.org/news/woolsey-fire
