More macro fun from the weekend, this time a close of my Argus C3 rangefinder which is often known from the Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets film

Am I ever not in the middle of an artistic crisis? I'm not really making what I want to be making at the moment, and probably need a break from the internet again. I'm very much into the idea of becoming a recluse this year.

Hard to believe that these two German classics are separated by 19 years. The elder of the two, the IIIa, was manufactured in 1939, The IIIg is from 1958.

Yes, there was a war in between. Even taking that into account, it's surprising how small the changes are. There are many of changes, all of them rather insignificant.

Both cameras have a fastest exposure time of 1/1000 seconds. Both have a separate dial for long exposure times, long meaning everything above 1/20 s (IIIa) or i/30 s (IIIg) and up to 1 s.

Both require the first 10 cm of the film leader to be trimmed with a scissor. And both require unmounting the bottom to load the film, which has to be fumbled onto a metal spool. That used to bother me, at first. I doesn't any more, I'm used to it now. No point in grumbling about such things. If you don't like it, a Leica isn't the right camera for you. No problem with that - there are plenty of other cameras.

No thread-mount Leica really is a rangefinder camera. The finder is physically separate from the range measurement. You peer into the little viewport that's more to the left, which gives a magnified image of the scene, focus, and then switch other other viewport to do the image compo. With the IIIa, the two viewports are about 3 cm apart. With the IIIg they're right next to one another (this can be rather tricky if you use them alternatingly).

Yes, that is ante-diluvian. It was obsolete in 1939 and it certainly was obsolete in 1958. No question about it. I mostly don't even use the range-measurement. I guess the distance and use hyperfocal DOF for focusing.

Zeiss-Ikon offered a real viewfinder in 1936 on Contax II that Leica introduced only with the M3 in 1954. In terms of ergonomics, the Contax ran rings around the Leicas. Apart from the rangefinder with a much longer baseline, the Contax offered a back-opening body, and a bayonet for fast lens exchange.

But hey, the reason why people use Leicas is the reason why I use Leicas. Because they are so well engineered that they just go on working, every single bit of them, decade after decade after decade.

Both of these two ladies make a wonderful, round ker-lick sound on shutter release. The sound of a well-made mechanical device. And both feel good in your hand, really good. The almost 80 year old IIIa even more than her younger sibling. Two good reasons for me to go on taking pictures with them.

The IIIg has a larger viewfinder and shows a parallax-corrected frame for a 50 mm or 90 mm focal length. The IIIa doesn't offer that feature, and its finder is rather arbitrary anyway. It's calculated for a 50 mm lens, but I use her with a 35 mm Summaron, so what I want to be in the frame mostly is in the frame, erratic finder notwithstanding.

The IIIg has a self-timer. It works fine, but I never use it. The IIIg also offers an M-sync for a bulb flash unit. I never looked into how to sync the flash because I only do available light.

"Hey, look what I found, guys!" Jack awkwardly shuffled to his teammates while carrying the mannequin he found back in the dumpster. Harold was already groaning with hand on his face. "Put the bloody mannequin down, damnit," he said. They were supposed to be at war waiting for the order to strike, and there he was stuck with Jack the fool. The mech loomed over them, standing by in the ruined city streets, an icon of destruction and war bringer. And yet to Jack it seemed like no more than a statue providing shade. He placed the doll beside Harold and grinned, putting an arm around Harold's shoulder. "I think I'm gonna bring her home to see the folks."

If Harold had groaned any louder the entire block would've heard him already.

Built this for the H2H MOC Duel with Kosmas Santosa. In short, we gotta build 3 MOCs of approximately 16x16 size and 16 bricks tall, and with different themes. This is the Mech theme.

It's been some time since I've built a walker and my approach to building has changed since then. This one is actually quite similar to an older and bigger build, but far more satisfying. I've started to play with curves and try to make the shape flow rather than keep it in blocky forms like I did before.

And the mannequin thing is there just because a couple of mutilated minidolls were lying in front of me, and the diorama needed color. So...yeah XD

CAC Range Finders

Although I'm not a huge fan of CAC's helmets, their new range finders are amazing! The amount of detail is spot-on for such a tiny piece. I hope they continue to make these in more colors. As you can see, they fit other helmets than their own as well. These really are awesome little pieces!

Tower Transit route 28: Kensal Rise - Wandsworth, Mapleton Crescent

Southside Shopping Centre (S)

Just as it seemed like we were not getting anything special out of the Notting Hill Carnival bus services this year, Tower Transit sent out a VH on the 28 on Notting Hill Carnival Monday. To my surprise, the working has been recorded on the London Vehicle Finder a few times beforehand but most of these outings have been short.

VH38125 did a round in the late afternoon before going out of service, using Warwick Gardens as a bus stand (like the withdrawn 9H) to avoid an over-crowding of curtailed services at Notting Hill Gate. I had a photo but wanted better, so to see if it would come back in service I made use of the wait re-familiarising myself with the southwestern section of the route.

I was reminded what the Notting Hill Carnival is all about onboard a 28: to observe interactions and share one with passengers from different backgrounds all commuting home with the carnival's multicultural embrace, most symbolically evoked by classic Caribbean dubs which a man continued to play from his phone, hit me with nostalgia and love for Carnival. Such vibes set me up nicely for a better photo of this odd-working once it returned to service, where it would stay out for the rest of the evening.

Beautifully marked Leopard slug "Limax maximus" making it's way across my utility room floor the other night (I'm still fathoming out how it got in the house?) It was about 6" long, I put the €2 coin down to show how big it was but then realised for anyone not in the EU that doesn't really help lol. I picked it up & tried to get it to pose on my left hand in better light while I held the camera in my right hand but it was shy & I got covered in slime so after 5 minutes I gave up & deposited it in the flower bed.
