Obviously not professionally shot; the light source was from overhead recessed lighting, which casts unsightly shadows. I still couldn't resist taking photos.

Outstanding filet mignon with a cool fig compote and polenta. The steak was hugely overcooked, but they made me a new one.

Intriguing Steak, Underwhelming Sides: Wagyu Filet Mignon at Tavern N Town Marriott Beachside Key West - IMRAN™
The 8oz Wagyu filet mignon was a "special" at Tavern N Town, nestled within the Marriott Beachside Resort in Key West next to the grand lobby, when I stayed there recently. It was certainly intriguing. Although it did not live up to its high recommendations, the steak itself was decent - tender, flavorful, and cooked as I like it. However, for the hefty more than $100 price tag wth tax and tip (especially considering no drinks or desserts were included), my expectations were for a much more sumptuous experience.
While the service was commendable, the dryness of the steak and the boring sides left me dissatisfied. The portion of sautéed mushrooms was meager, and the accompanying peppers, though well-presented, weren't quite the ideal pairing for a filet mignon in my humble opinion. Mashed potatoes would have been a more satisfying (and classic) complement.
Compared to Prime Steakhouse in town, Tavern N Town's offering fell significantly short. Prime Steakhouse offered a wider variety and more exciting choices, truly complementing their exceptional steak, which itself was far superior to this one.
If you're staying at the Marriott Beachside and hankering for a good steak, Tavern N Town won't disappoint. However, for the ultimate price-to-taste satisfaction, venture out to Prime Steakhouse for a more complete and memorable dining experience.

Jackie makes us laugh! Her dad does not have a Facebook page and he isn't in the least bit interested in getting one. She saw a funny youtube video "Can I be your friend?" that made her think of her dad … so she grabbed a stack of post-it notes and asked him what he 'liked!'
It turns out he liked a lot of things:
• Father's Day gift of a wheelbarrow
• Tomato garden completely weeded (by us)
• Filet mignon on the charcoal grill
• He liked that Jackie liked him!
• His wife! LOL!
• Painkillers with a tropical umbrella
The only thing he 'Unliked' was the ants ... but we took care of that!
Just wanted to share something silly & fun!! It was a great Father's Day for the old man!
"Happy Anything Monday!" Heading off to Border's soon to browse, surf (catch up on Flickr) ... and drink cafe mochas with Jack. She turns 19 tomorrow so hitting the book and art stores today!! :D
OK, OK, OK, so it's not my usual vegetarian fare. But since I'm batching it (my wife's back east for the funeral of her mother), I need to have small, easy, and delicious lunches.
(The rest of the day is taken care of, vegetarian: breakfast is Vegemite on toast topped with sliced cheddar and tomato; dinner is soup & salad).
So. For the asparagus, delightfully easy: chop off the tough bottom parts of the stalks, steam them for ±10 minutes, and serve with a sauce of melted butter, lemon juice, ground cumin, a pinch of curry, and ras-el-hanout. Add a bit of chilli in one form or another (Cholula sauce, Tabaso chipotle, whatever) if you like.
For the beef: these are tiny little slices (less than 1 inch (2cm) thick, and I couldn't figure out what to do with them. I saw lots of recipes on the internet for thick, big slices of filet, that just didn't seem to work, and I couldn't decide on what cooking utensil to use.
Finally, I studded them (3 each?) with little slivers of a small garlic clove, rubbed a bit of Maggi sauce onto them, and salted & peppered both sides, letting them sit for a while to absorb the flavours.
I finally chose a cheap little (20cm, 8") non-stick frypan — can't get more basic than that! — and heated it up. I added a splash of olive oil, and sautéed the filets for a few minutes on each side, until just brown, then removed them to a plate to rest for 5-10 minutes, drizzled with the de-glazed pan bits in a bit of reduced sherry.
After warming a serving plate and the butter sauce for a minute in the microwave, I placed the asparagus on the plate, poured over the butter sauce, and added the beef.
Absolute delight: the beef was just medium rare, tender and tasty, and the asparagus sang with flavour.
Easy to do, perfect for one.

on our way back to our hotel from Sequoia national park, we passed by a million (literally a million, maybe more) orange groves as we drove. who wouldn't be tempted to take some? my mom. in a hasty move, my parents stopped the car and quickly ran out to pick some oranges. it got my heart racing...would we be considered as robbers? we finally got back in the car while my dad was tugging a huge bag of oranges, full to the brim, and repeating, "We're freakin orange thieves!"
we're freakin orange thieves... :[)
i'll never forget the time we became furtive thieves. unforgettable
Salty Sizzling Steak Marriott Midnight Meal - IMRAN™
I had not been to Pittsburgh since last century. It was around the same time of year around 1997. Landing there this time on a late night flight meant I didn’t get to see much on the ride to the downtown Marriott there. I checked in just before the last call for the hotel’s restaurant.
I was exhausted from an all nighter because I had a flight cancellation from Tampa to New York around 4am. So I had to scamper to continue my meetings remotely.
It was supposed to be a Tampa-New York early morning flight and a New York-Pittsburgh evening flight. But I had to get the last available flight after my meetings. And it was a Tampa-Pittsburgh flight with a change of planes in Atlanta.
I hate connecting flights. With one hour connections you barely make it from one gate to the other, as happened on my outbound flight. On the return I ended up at Atlanta airport for four hours waiting for a delayed connection. It just adds unneeded drama or life-sucking time-wasting delays.
In any case, I got to the Pittsburgh Marriott City Center. I had not even had time for a proper lunch. I avoid heavy meals late at night, especially near midnight when I have to up at 6 am for 7 am meetings. However, at the Marriott the menu choices were limited. But at least they had a place open.
Since childhood I’ve been too much of a red-meat lover. So I ordered this filet mignon with crab cake, veggies, and mashed potatoes.
Much that the meat and meal could be rated as great, and much that I’m grateful for every meal, fancy or otherwise, I’m blessed to have, I have to warn you — this steak must have been marinated in a salt mine!
I could literally feel my blood pressure rising from the salt intake. 😄 But there was no time to ask for a change, so I imagined it was a chef special recipe that made it so salty. 😊 I’d definitely order this again but hope someone there pays attention to the salt thrown in the meal.

We ate at The Reserve in Old Town Scottsdale to celebrate my wife's birthday. It is part of the Café Monarch family. Café Monarch is larger, elegant, and romantic. The Reserve is more intimate with superb food. IMHO Michelin 2 star quality. We judge the dining experience as well worth the time and cost. Café Monarch will be our restaurant for our anniversary. This was the Eighth Course - Japanese A5 Wagy Filet Mignon, Sweet Potato, Mushroom, Dashi, Sake.
Dashi (出汁, だし) is a family of stocks used in Japanese cuisine.
The most common form of dashi is a simple broth made by heating water containing kombu (edible kelp) and kezurikatsuo (shavings of katsuobushi – preserved, fermented skipjack tuna or bonito) to near-boiling, then straining the resultant liquid;
Shiitake dashi is made by soaking dried shiitake mushrooms in water. Dried shiitake is preferred over fresh due to a stronger presence of savory or umami flavors.
The Reserve is in an old house on First Avenue in Old Town Scottsdale. This was the original location for Café Monarch which is now just across the street. You enter down a walkway where you can look through the windows at the kitchen.
