Nothing like a Flame Robin to warm up a cold day.

Taken with Nikon D7100 and Nikon 50mm f1.8 set at f22. Shutter speed 1/5s. ISO 200. Lens mounted using section 1 of a three section macro tube. An FC100 LED ring light was mounted on the lens. Sharpening and desaturation done with Photoscape.

Straight out of the camera. These tiny flowers, no more than a half inch across (2 cm or less) were growing on our holly bushes (Ilex). We have a hedge in front of part of our house, and a couple of hollies, about 2 meters/yards tall, make up part of it. I have no idea what species of holly this is. There are a lot of them.

 

You can see flower parts clearly in this photo. Four petals, a prominent green stigma, sitting on an ovary, and four stamens, sticking out at the junctions of the petals, each stamen with an anther on the end, held out by a filament.

 

No bright colors, but the flowers do attract pollinators.

With a narrow enough aperture and a short enough exposure, my camera can make a 60-watt light bulb dark.

  

I took this picture using a Nikon Coolpix L100 with my DIY macro lens.

 

To make the lens, I took apart an old pair of binoculars and took the two lenses and put them into one of the binocular housings. I then taped the housing with the two lenses inside and taped them onto a thin piece of wood that I could then mount to my tripod mount on the bottom of my camera. I had to make sure the lens was just out of reach of the camera lens, so that there wouldn't be a lens error.

 

This picture is of a light bulb filament and the lines you see going around are smudges of fingerprint from putting the lightbulb in place.

Flowers where the filaments are a major eye-catcher are rare.

This weeks post for the Random Day Project. A broken filament in a light bulb.

The 606 bearing seems to have fixed my stock MK6 extruder, so we'll call this multi-part print of Jag's filament drive both a test of the fix and a spare if I need one.

 

Two nits to pick with the design: there isn't room for a full height M6 nut back there, and I think there is a typo and you want an M4x40 not an M3x40 bolt on the lever.

 

Other than that, a beautiful design and a sharp print!

I love those weird filamenty bulbs. Put them in (basically) a mason jar lamp and a photo was inevitable.

This Ostracod, more commonly referred to as seed shrimp, is a crustacean that was included in a wastewater sample sent to our lab.

 

Ecologically, many ostracods are found in fresh water. As filter feeders, they feed primarily on plankton, alga, yeasts, fungi, bacteria, and detritus that can be swept by their hairy appendages. Seed shrimp are often found in in secondary clarifiers, after having been washed in by the rain.

 

What you see here is a close up of them in their shells. They seem to be able to wait out a chemical dump and other types of toxicities. So far, cupric sulfate and emulsified d-limonene seem to kill them, and we are determining the dose.
