"Ficus pumila" This is the grown up version of that tiny-leafed pot plant known as the "Creeping Fig." My neighbor planted it to cover an old Chinese Tallow Tree but our warm climate allowed it to flourish into a 20+' monster with woody stems and these 3" to 4" fruits. It covered the Tallow trunk and suffocated it until a large limb fell. They hired a crew to remove it.

Out in the open Ficus macrophylla has a relatively compact rounded crown but in rainforest situation it can reach an enormous size,up to 50m high and a stem diameter of up to 240cm. While it can be grown directly in the ground it often starts its life high up in the canopy gradually enmeshing the host as its roots follow the host tree to the ground.
It has glossy lustrous leaves and develops massive flanged and irregularly wide buttresses to support its huge volume in shallow, sometimes waterlogged, soils.
The fruit varies with maturity from green through orange to purple when ripe and is edible but quite dry to taste.The fruit can appear at any time but generally Feb-May.

Water flowing from the Figtree Drive culvert flows through this area of Raintrees known as the Forest of Conspiracy. The area is quite flat and water soon fans out across the entire area before converging to a single channel which ultimately exits the property at Panorama Drive culvert. This area in this video until 2019 was full of Bangalow Palms however the drought of 2019 killed almost all of them. They were cut down and replaced with drought resilient rainforest trees in early 2020 and those trees are, after 2 great years of consistent rainfall, now getting up to a couple of metres tall.
This area has been the area most impacted by recent flood events due to logs and floating debris pushing trees over.
To some extent the problem has been resolved by removal of all logs from the area and those that remain have been secured with steel star pickets to prevent them moving. The main problems we experience now relate to mulch piling up at the base of our smaller planted trees causing them to be pushed over. The soil in the run-ups to the bridges usually gets washed away also so there's always weeks of work required to clean up and restore the property after every flood.
Hanging Apples On A Trunk -
While cashews and others fruit on branches, the yellow stem fig fruits on trunk. A single stalk here and a tiny bunch there, with “green apples” growing all over his body, the fig is a strange tree to marvel. Rejecting all other pollinators, he stayed faithful to the fig wasp. Through a small opening in the fig flower, the female wasp crawls in to live and she dies within in safe haven. The fruits of their love ripen and plop down one by one on soft ground. The toucans, squirrels, bats and monkeys crowd round to feast; for they love the sweetness that the yellow stem fig gives.
An avenue of magnificent Fig trees that has always taken my attention when driving into the city .

Amazing old fig tree that took over an exiting tree stump. My mum wants to get married underneath it.
Botanist Prof. David Bellamy said this fig tree in Galway was a "botanical wonder". Galway corporation had planned to cut it down.

Handheld pano - about 20 shots which when blended was 900Mb in Photoshop. I've done an extensive amount of playing here but I hope you like the effect ;-)
So thankful to the awesome team of volunteers from Figtree Anglican Church who pulled it off - some 170+, the 4500+ people from our local community who came and joined us in carols, and to God who held off the rain until we were packing up some time after 10pm - awesome all 'round ;-)

I just finished making this table runner, using the template and directions for the Funky Pinwheel block by Jodi from Pleasant Home blog. I used some charm squares from her Etsy shop, as well as a few of my own fabrics. I love the spring-fresh palette and sweet prints...yellow, aqua, green and red. There are strawberry fabrics from Sandi Henderson's Meadowsweet, plus some Mill House Inn and Strawberry Fields by Fig Tree Quilts. I love the Fig Tree Cream background.
