Despite its unusual pattern this is Phryneta spinator or Figtree Borer, I have been told by people whom I trust to know their stuff. It is obviously a very variable species.
This tree was planted in the grounds of Vern's old family home over 80 years ago. In another two weeks the figs should be ripe enough to make some jam.
I turned this landscape shot of mine into a poster for a visiting speaker from Malawi. Stephen is a pretty amazing guy with an even more amazing story. If you're around in Wollongong check him out this Sunday at 6pm - Figtree Anglican Church.

You can find the story of Stephen's life in the book Out of the Black Shadows

There aren't many fruits to compete with the fig. Its delicate texture and taste come with an exquisite biblical touch.
I love figs.

Fig Tree Bay is a sandy beach in the resort of Protaras, Cyprus. The sandy beach stretches for 500m and the waters are clean enough for the beach to have been awarded blue flag designation. The beach, which runs the length of its own cove, takes its name from the fig trees located close to the coast.
I found buds on my orchid then my fig tree is busting out with gorgeous little green leaves...add the primrose blooming on my desk.....I'm in almost pre-Spring heaven! :)
Matthieu 24:32,33
"Que l'exemple du figuier vous serve d'enseignement : quand ses rameaux deviennent tendres et que ses feuilles poussent vous savez que l'été est proche.
De même, quand vous verrez tous ces évènements, sachez que le Fils de l'homme est proche, comme aux portes de la ville."
Mat. 24:32 "Now learn a lesson from the fig tree. When its buds become tender and its leaves begin to sprout, you know without being told that summer is near.
33 Just so, when you see the events I've described beginning to happen, you can know his return is very near, right at the door."

Central Queensland to Southern NSW.
Out in the open Ficus macrophylla has a relatively compact rounded crown but in rainforest situation it can reach an enormous size,up to 50m high and a stem diameter of up to 240cm. While it can be grown directly in the ground it often starts its life high up in the canopy gradually enmeshing the host as its roots follow the host tree to the ground.
It has glossy lustrous leaves and develops massive flanged and irregularly wide buttresses to support its huge volume in shallow, sometimes waterlogged, soils.
The fruit varies with maturity from green through orange to purple when ripe and is edible but quite dry to taste. The fruit can appear at any time but generally Feb-May.
