With surprisingly few glued to phone screens, passengers at Swindon pass the time in quiet contemplation while waiting on their train.
Meanwhile, over in the down loop, Freightliner 'Shed' 66549 waits for the road while working the 12.45pm Oxford (Banbury Road) - Whatley Quarry empties (6C50). Not much contemplation time for the driver in this instance - some 15 minutes after drawing to a stop the train was on the move once again.
I normally aim for discretion around folks with the camera but it's not always easy with the light-green Canon 100-400 zoom on the front, and in this case I seem to have captured the interest of at least one individual.
What with track rationalisation and the electrification project, there's not so much left of the old GWR infrastructure here, and what does remain has occasionally seen some modification. Happily the original and characterful stone building on the island platform still stands and, being of 1842 vintage, was Grade II Listed just over 10 years ago. Just a pity the ornate canopy supports have been given what look like heavy-duty concrete socks - but at least they are still there.
Comments off, thanks.

A few of the common names for this flower and its close relatives include the voodoo lily, snake lily, stink lily, the black dragon and dragonwort. In a phrase, this is one vulgar-smelling bloom. Originally found in and around Greece, Dracunculus vulgaris has been introduced to the United States, most commonly on the West Coast in California, Oregon and Washington. Like with many of the flowers listed here, its stench is that of rotting flesh. The good news is that the smell doesn't last too long — only about a day — and the flower itself is stunning and unique
A few days ago I was sent a Retina No. 117 (1933) by someone who found it at a marketplace and was curious about it, but didn't want to keep it. So I serviced and restored it and took it out to make a few photos last night. This is one of the test images, made on Ilford Delta 400 film, developed in FA-1027 from Photographers Formulary.
Exposure was 1/125th at f11.5
I'd say that's a pretty remarkable result for a 92 year old camera/lens!

There are few old farmers left who remember the days when windmills like this one silhouetted against a glorious sunset were actively pumping water. If I recall correctly, we did not get electricity on our farm until 1949 when I was a tyke. It wasn't long before the reliability of electricity to run a motor on a pump left the job of the windmill in peril but it remains standing to this day.
When I was six years old, I had already learned to discern vulnerabilities in my mother when it came time for her to discipline me. I found she could not run as fast as I could which always gave me an escape, albeit normally a temporary one. But one of her greatest fears was heights and one time when she was determined to kill me for wrongdoing, she chased me and I headed for the windmill and promptly proceeded to climb up 40 feet on the rungs and from that elevation she no longer looked very formidable.
Her intent to discipline me melted away and in her fear she pleaded with me to come down but I was too wise for that trick. She scampered into the house and came out with a small white bag in her hand and yelled up she would give me some candy corn if I came down. After a plea bargain that my coming down would not turn into a spanking, I came down much to her relief and I have had a special fondness for candy corn ever since.

Very few people in this world are visionaries. Jonah LeRoy Doane Robinson was definitely one of them. It was his idea to create a sculpture project in the Black Hills of South Dakota to promote tourism for the state. Thank goodness for his vision and his persistence, hard work and determination!

(Hopefully at least a few of you remember the Nerf commercials from the 1990s in order to understand my title...)
As referenced in my previous post, Brian and I made a gutsy call to pull the plug on the Shenandoah Valley Railroad (and Virginia as a whole) and make a 4-hour drive north to Pennsylvania. What was our target? Well, there was a chance that the RBMN's NRFF job could have three, matched SD50s in their newer "Fast Freight Service" paint scheme. We also knew that our good friends Steve and Zach Carlson were up there (and, I was pleasantly surprised when another good friend, Norm Vigeant, emerged from Steve's truck as well!).
The five of us waited together at our first location in Tamaqua, not quite sure what the power lineup would be. But, when the NRFF came around the corner, there they were: the three, matched SD50s! The chase was on!
At my (and others') request, Zach Carlson graciously posted his excellent drone view of the train crossing the Lehigh River Bridge at White Haven. So, I'm sure I'll share my version someday down the road, but not for this trip report.
Instead, I'll share just a couple, and start with one of the unique views I got thanks to Grundy Rail Tours delivering once again! Though this telephoto view doesn't show all the power, it hides the two reefers that were on the headpin, thereby giving the illusion of a coal train (certainly appropriate for "The Road of Anthracite"!)

A few clouds roll in on an otherwise sunny Monday, June 6, 2022 morning as the Kansas City Southern business special cruises past a group of grain bins in the commmunity of Stotesbury, MO. Having left Kansas City around two hours prior, this particular business train included five Canadian Pacific cars on the rear. The train would make a stop in Pittsburg, KS for a midday meeting of executives before continuting to Heavener, OK to stop for the night.
Our big magnolia came in at a bad time this year, with a hard freeze predicted for the next day. Fortunately, Mickie cut a few branches off and put them in a vase in the dining room, so I moved them to the studio - just the other end of the dining room these days! - and photographed them. I like the different stages of blossoming represented here. Tiring a bit of plain black backgrounds, I thought this blue-green complimented the blossoms nicely. Hoping you agree.

A few days after the turntable pictures in Glenwood, I've found the Paynesville Sub wayfreight again. They've got the same power and obviously got the turntable to turn at some point as the 4411 is now east facing on the east end of the consist. It was always a treat to see these GP38-2s in action, but they looked especially nice in the snow under blue arctic skies.
A few days ago, I went exploring the Vallée des Fantômes, with my brother Renald(lefion) and my friend Julien (Abo)...we were alone on the summit for about 2 hours....it was a magical experience that I will never forget.

The Vallée des Fantômes
The phantoms inhabit the valley at an altitude of 800 metres near the clear peaks. The trees are so well protected from winds that blowing snow from nearby summits causes up to three metres of snow accumulation, decking out the evergreens with a layer of soft snow that eventually camouflages them completely. These are the phantoms. It is guaranteed that you will experience a total change of scenery! After a good snowfall, the atmosphere is muted, the ground seems to be carpeted in cotton batten and the silence is omnipresent.
Panorama 360º par Abo (Julien).... a must!

A few weeks ago I drove over a hundred fifty mile round trip to photograph Kingfishers, this morning the Kingfisher came to visit me. I was sitting on the balcony having coffee when a Kingfisher perched in a tree in the front yard. The tree is about a hundred fifty feet from me but I am used to that kind of shot with them so I had a pleasant fifteen minutes with him. Sitting at a table on the balcony, drinking coffee and photographing Kingfishers, what a wonderful life this is.
Beginnings. A few days ago I received an unexpected gift. A Russian Helios 44-M lens, dating from 1979. You probably know I am a great fan of the 44-2, so I am delighted to be able to add the new lens to my love affair with Russian Helios lenses ;o)
This is my very first shot with the 44-M lens, mounted on the Sony NEX-7 camera. Some small Peruvian lily flowers resting on a glass base, and slightly overhanging it too! Well, I was impatient to see what the lens could do!
With many, many thanks to jesse1dog with his inspired exploration of all manner of lenses and what they can offer the adventurous and curious photographer!!
HBW! ;o)

A few days before I took this photo I ended up talking with some people from Sedona on a trail. I had hiked more than 50 of the trails around Sedona by 2011 and asked them about some of the lesser known places to get some great photos. They told me about this secret location and since it had recently rained mentioned that there were some potential puddles that could provide nice reflections of Cathedral Butte at sunset. Notice that the view of the Butte from this location is at a different angle as that seen in photos from Red Rock Park or around Oak Creek. I was lucky to be the only person there that night.

“In a world of big things, there are few as striking and as monumental as the Stockton Bight Sand Dunes in the Worimi Conservation Lands in Port Stephens.
From fun adventure to ancient heritage, the Worimi Conservation Lands at Anna Bay and Williamtown offer amazing experiences.
The beautiful sandscape is forever changing. Created thousands of years ago, the largest moving coastal dunes in the Southern Hemisphere are spectacular. The Stockton Bight Sand Dunes, in the Worimi Conservation Lands, cover 4,200 hectares, 1,800 of which are forest, as well as 32kms of the longest moving sand dunes in the southern hemisphere. These truly awe-inspiring dunes reach heights of over 30 metres with slopes of up to 60 degrees to form a majestic landscape are ideal for sand-boarding, an exciting activity all year.
There are various 4WD, quad biking and sand-boarding tours. Or saddle up on a horse or on a camel and discover the extraordinary natural beauty. Take a fishing rod - the beach fishing is excellent.
Explore the giant Stockton Bight sand dunes and enjoy four-wheel driving along NSW’s longest beach (with a permit). Beach and dune driving in your own 4WD is popular way to enjoy the area at your own pace. You’ll need to buy a special beach permit before steering your way onto the sandy stretch.”

Few more with Hewlett Paskard 75mm f1.9. On this moody Montreal cloudy weather it is soft and lack contrast more than Anastigmat. Wide open it is close to unusable. It needs to be closed a bit. Fifteen blades in aperture help to still have nice smooth bokeh with we defined balls of confusion if they are present.
A lot of contrast is added to those photos in Darktable, and I warmed the colours .

Jim Rohn.
Emanuel James "Jim" Rohn (September 17, 1930 – December 5, 2009) was an American entrepreneur, author and motivational speaker. Rohn started his professional life by working as a stock clerk for department store Sears. Around this time, a friend invited him to a lecture given by entrepreneur John Earl Shoaff. In 1955, Rohn joined Shoaff's direct selling business AbundaVita as a distributor.
In 1957, Rohn resigned his distributorship with AbundaVita and joined Nutri-Bio, another direct selling company. It was at this point that the company's founders, including Shoaff, started to mentor him. After this mentorship, Rohn built one of the largest organizations in the company. In 1960 when Nutri-Bio expanded into Canada, Shoaff and the other founders selected Rohn as a vice president for the organization.
Rohn mentored Mark R. Hughes (the founder of Herbalife International) and life coach Tony Robbins in the late 1970s.[citation needed] Others who credit Rohn for his influence on their careers include authors Mark Victor Hansen and Jack Canfield (Chicken Soup book series), author/lecturer Brian Tracy, Todd Smith, and T. Harv Eker. Rohn also coauthored the novel Twelve Pillars with Chris Widener.
Rohn was the recipient of the 1985 National Speakers Association CPAE Award for excellence in speaking. He is also the author of 17 different written, audio, and video media. Source Wikipedia.
A few weeks back I spotted some poppies in a small patch , I thought I would have a closer look on my way to work Yesterday . So after negotiating a barbed wire fence I found they were very few and a bit far from the edge of the field, My old 90 - 300 mm lens is a bit long in the tooth now and I don`t really think what I got with it very good, but i`m yet to try editing those shots, but I did find one or two close to me and in this case really happy with what I got , Hope you like it my shot of the day I think.
It is that time of the year again. Flowers are leaving for the winter and colors will appear on the trees. This is one of the few flowers left on my friend's flower garden.
Soon I will be doing the fall colors and landscapes. This winter I will take a trip to Yellowstone National Park in the winter. It is photography trip. I am really looking forward to seeing Yellowstone in the winter.

The past few weeks have been the best I can ever remember for wildlife photography.
A real highlight amongst many special moments has been the privilege to watch a family of wild otters - lots of 4am starts and plenty of no-shows and disappointments along the way, but when they appear they are a complete delight to watch.
Here is the youngest and smallest cub - still very dependant upon his mother a rarely out of her sight but he's learning all the while and is fascinated by anything that moves. Something below the surface of the water has certainly drawn his attention here.
....and, yes,....I do feel incredibly lucky!

Taken a few minutes after the previous shot the clouds went a deep red then faded to black leaving a pastel strip along the horizon which slowley faded to darkness. I sat on the beach until the stars came out :-)
Taken on the coast of the Gulf of Finland in Lauttasaari, Helsinki in mid-March. The ice left once again and very quickly. A couple of days earlier, the sea was still frozen here in the coast of southern Finland. A few warm days did the trick. Only some lonely ice raft remained. This is definitely the best time of the year, the ice is leaving, the birds are coming and the greenery is coming soon (A6C7796-e3).
