It was late evening as the sun settled above the Alaska range in the distance and shadows hiked out across the fall landscape. We stopped at this lake to see almost a mirror surface reflecting the trees, mountains, and clouds. Mosquitoes must have been on vacation as we suffered no bites from those bloodthirsty predators.

Had a few hours to spare before work on Tuesday so headed to a favourite spot of mine. Knowing that the tide was relatively high I timed it so that the little island called 'Cribinau' was isolated by the sea.
There were several photographers capturing the little causeway to the church so I headed out of the way onto the cliff and captured quite a long distance shot. The stunning mountains of Snowdonia provide such a striking backdrop to this location. I had intended the shot would be mono before I even got to the location as the light was relatively flat and fleeting so my options were limited. If you ever do visit Anglesey this is a must go to location if only to enjoy the calmness of it (as long as the Anglesey circuit are not in full flow and the buzz of the motorcycles or cars don't spoil it). For those with an interest in the Church please see the link: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/St_Cwyfan%27s_Church,_Llangwyfan
Only a few hundred meters remain to the destination. For 2TE10M-2310 and its coal train, the journey ends at the Ekibastuz-2 freight yard. The train is heavy, ordinary, and in this case, too, it consists of 64 wagons loaded with fresh coal. Because the train has to negotiate the embankment over the settling ponds slowly and then climb a gradient, the engineer has to change gears. This sudden change leads to more tractive effort, but beforehand to more fuel injection and sometimes unfavorable combustion. Be that as it may, "2310" is a smoker and shows it, almost without shame.

Sunrise a few weeks ago and a little inversion in the Dove Valley down towards Hartington and beyond.
Decided to send the drone up for this lovely angle down the valley.

A few weeks ago I purchased a 2 terabyte and 8 terabyte drive from Costco. The 8T for use as a scratch disc for my smoke shots and the 2T to master all my finals for Xmas.
I have always run redundant back ups. A carry over from when my audio work went from magnetic tape, a razor blade and edit block to digital files , computer and hard drive. Except this time, I used the 2T drive for 2 weeks without a backup amassing shots to print and, the drive died. My fault from ignorance and being cheap.
The last few weeks have been spent re-finalizing and organizing the shots for family and friends, but continually get distracted by images I passed over due to my short attention.
I relearned a lesson and get to review some shots I normally wouldn't have given a second glance.
While few people realize it, the ARR does own trackage outside the Last Frontier. Not much though!
The ARR owns the barge slip on Harbor Island in Seattle that they use as their interchange point to the UP and BNSF and the greater North American rail network. The ownership is actually 50/50 with Seaspan Corp (a Washington Group company) although Seaspan has never used the slip. Over time ARR’s ownership stake gradually rises since they presently pay for all maintenance and upkeep on the structure. ARR’s trackage ends adjacent the nose of the unit (hence the ARR logo on the sign) meaning the railroad owns about one car length on solid ground.
UP Seattle based yard crew YSE51R is seen here beginning the process of stripping the weekly barge that has arrived from the 49th State. Three barges owned and operated by Alaska Railbelt Marine (a member of the Lynden family of companies) are constantly cycling between Seattle and Whittier, AK carrying railcars on 8 tracks and containers stacked three high in the racks above. They are truly marvels of modern logistics!
Since the ARR owns no yard trackage in Seattle and has no locomotives of its own with which to switch the barge, the UP provides this service since it is the railroad that owns the connecting rails on Harbor Island. At the time this yard assignment was normally just a two man RCL crew, but on barge days an engineer was called and the barge is worked by a conventional three man crew.
In this view the UP crew has reached in with their handle (in order to keep the locomotive off the slip itself) consisting of a covered hopper and three old cabooses to begin pulling cars off the southbound ARMS voyage 1023 (the 23rd sailing of 2010). This particular barge is the Fairbanks Provider built by Gunderson in 2001 it is 420 ft long and 100 ft wide with 3190 linear feet of track on the deck and a dead weight of 15,300 tons.

Taken a few days before the official date of the recent "blue supermoon" on an exceptionally clear night in Mannum by the Murray River. The area beyond Mannum is known for being one of the best dark sky sites in Australia, (Australia's first internationally recognised International Dark Sky Reserve) and on this cool crisp evening, it lived up to its promise even when viewing the bright moon rather than the stars. I always love catching the moon like this just a few days before being full, to show off the wonderful rugged details on the surface.
I have just highlighted a crater which looks slightly blue compared to all the others - top, right of centre of image. You need to pixel peep to see it. A quick Google search has others mentioning the same thing about this crater. Apparently it is a natural colour of a relatively young crater which appears blue compared to the surrounding more brownish soil. It is more apparent if I deliberately over saturate the original shot, but this image here is presented at "straight out of camera" levels of saturation.
(update - I believe the blue tinged crater is the Aristarchus crater and has been the subject of much discussion about the colour over many years)
I have since posted a second cropped shot with a little saturation applied to highlight the colour a little more.
This was a handheld shot. Gotta love modern image stabilising!
As you might have seen already I've built a few warships in the past. But for me those ones weren't good enough which is why I of course had to build another one. The main change I did was making the size a little bigger. Both the lower red part, the grey section and the buildings on top are higher now, which was definitely a good decision. The only thing that's bothering me is that in my opinion the back part is to short compared to the rest of the ship.
But overall I'm quite happy with how this ship turned out. Let me know what you think about the build and how I could improve it!

Pretty weird having snow on my first visit, not that i was complaining. But not knowing where i was stepping with 2ft snow drifts in places was a challenge!
few days ago i went to this pass where i was surprised by a strong and cold wind; luckily i was able to take cover behind the wall of San Nicolao chapel whose roof appears here in the photo; here i enjoy my lunch looking at Pizzo San Giacomo (in the centre) in front of me, a steep mountain near the border between Italy and Swiss

A few of the common names for this flower and its close relatives include the voodoo lily, snake lily, stink lily, the black dragon and dragonwort. In a phrase, this is one vulgar-smelling bloom. Originally found in and around Greece, Dracunculus vulgaris has been introduced to the United States, most commonly on the West Coast in California, Oregon and Washington. Like with many of the flowers listed here, its stench is that of rotting flesh. The good news is that the smell doesn't last too long — only about a day — and the flower itself is stunning and unique
Did you see the television coverage a few weeks back of a failed rocket engine test (known as ‘Hot Fire’) at Stennis Space Centre, in Mississippi where an eight minute engine test had to be shut down after one minute.🔥🙈
As you know this is described as NASA's new 'Megarocket' which consists of four engines. As always both Hoof and Horace are on 24hr call out as technical engineering advisers and fixers on these space projects.🐎🐷🚀
However due to ongoing travel restrictions H & H have been unable to launch their intergalactic Typhoon space craft which transports them from the village to any of the launch sites on the other side of the world in about 10 minutes.
In view of current travel restrictions Hoof & Horace have mothballed their Typhoon in the shed of our field, yet once a week they go and fire the engines up in order to keep the battery charged, kick the tyres and check the screen washer fluid (hope you all do the same with your vehicles at the moment)😷🚙
Under normal circumstances H & H would be hands on in the field and fix these issues with their socket sets, however like all of us they have had to adapt during these unprecedented times and are fully geared up to give advice or carry out repairs on a remote basis through their on line digital channel, www.bodgeittakethemoneyandrun.com 🔧🔨🔩⚙️
Horace figured out that the NASA engineers got the firing order incorrect, he has told them they must have used the Mk 1 Ford Escort firing order of 1,2,4,3. Instead of the more conventional Morris Marina firing order of 1,3,4,2.
Sure enough, the engineers swapped the plug leads around and 15 hours ago on live TV the four massive engines were fired up and successfully completed the eight minute test without a hitch. 🐷👍
Hoof & Horace have asked that their renumeration be paid direct into their thinking account at Sharp’s Brewery.
Thank you for viewing my photos, the comments and banter you leave are much appreciated.
Have a good weekend🍺🍺🍺🍷🍷🍷💃🐎🐷😎
A few shots from our trip to Greenland that I've tried to improve my editing. I got up at 5:00am to watch as we neared Greenland and took a few shots of these Fulmars skimming the relatively calm sea as the sun rose.
There are few old farmers left who remember the days when windmills like this one silhouetted against a glorious sunset were actively pumping water. If I recall correctly, we did not get electricity on our farm until 1949 when I was a tyke. It wasn't long before the reliability of electricity to run a motor on a pump left the job of the windmill in peril but it remains standing to this day.
When I was six years old, I had already learned to discern vulnerabilities in my mother when it came time for her to discipline me. I found she could not run as fast as I could which always gave me an escape, albeit normally a temporary one. But one of her greatest fears was heights and one time when she was determined to kill me for wrongdoing, she chased me and I headed for the windmill and promptly proceeded to climb up 40 feet on the rungs and from that elevation she no longer looked very formidable.
Her intent to discipline me melted away and in her fear she pleaded with me to come down but I was too wise for that trick. She scampered into the house and came out with a small white bag in her hand and yelled up she would give me some candy corn if I came down. After a plea bargain that my coming down would not turn into a spanking, I came down much to her relief and I have had a special fondness for candy corn ever since.

Very few people in this world are visionaries. Jonah LeRoy Doane Robinson was definitely one of them. It was his idea to create a sculpture project in the Black Hills of South Dakota to promote tourism for the state. Thank goodness for his vision and his persistence, hard work and determination!

I've noticed that there are next to no birds here at the moment. So, I am using one of my Christmas ornaments. The Cardinal does sing. Here is an example from Cornell Lab of Ornithology. which is a few miles south of where I live. www.birdnote.org/explore/sights-sounds/video/2012/04/bird...
A few clouds roll in on an otherwise sunny Monday, June 6, 2022 morning as the Kansas City Southern business special cruises past a group of grain bins in the commmunity of Stotesbury, MO. Having left Kansas City around two hours prior, this particular business train included five Canadian Pacific cars on the rear. The train would make a stop in Pittsburg, KS for a midday meeting of executives before continuting to Heavener, OK to stop for the night.

This is the first of a few photos I will be posting of my recent trip to Utah, Nevada, Arizona, and California. I went on the Subway hike earlier this year (as you can see from my prior posts here) but could immediately tell that this place would be magical in the fall. I was able to take a vacation from residency during the peak color and it was amazing!! I woke up early and got to the parking lot well before light and I was the first person there. I made it down and hiked for a while in the dark too. There was some early cloud cover that I thought was going to snuff out the light. Eventually the clouds burned off and I got some amazing glow!! I had this place all to myself again and it was such a treat to be able to take my time and enjoy a place like this with nobody else around. This image ended up being a 6 image panoramic with focus stacking. Overall, it turned out to be a 21 frame image. The other crazy part about this is the limited editing required. I obviously had to merge the photos, but I did very little to correct the colors or contrast - the light was perfect. Anyway, I was super excited to go here again and I was super excited to see the images when I got back. I hope you all can enjoy my photo place, even if its just a fraction as much as I do! :)
Riders leave the weighing-in room to mount their horses. Seen at Ballinrobe Racecourse, Co. Mayo, Ireland.
A few days after the turntable pictures in Glenwood, I've found the Paynesville Sub wayfreight again. They've got the same power and obviously got the turntable to turn at some point as the 4411 is now east facing on the east end of the consist. It was always a treat to see these GP38-2s in action, but they looked especially nice in the snow under blue arctic skies.
A few days ago, I went exploring the Vallée des Fantômes, with my brother Renald(lefion) and my friend Julien (Abo)...we were alone on the summit for about 2 hours....it was a magical experience that I will never forget.

The Vallée des Fantômes
The phantoms inhabit the valley at an altitude of 800 metres near the clear peaks. The trees are so well protected from winds that blowing snow from nearby summits causes up to three metres of snow accumulation, decking out the evergreens with a layer of soft snow that eventually camouflages them completely. These are the phantoms. It is guaranteed that you will experience a total change of scenery! After a good snowfall, the atmosphere is muted, the ground seems to be carpeted in cotton batten and the silence is omnipresent.
Panorama 360º par Abo (Julien).... a must!
„A few are still standing there, have survived the long dry phase, and the subsequent rainy days with quite manageable amounts of water seem to have helped them a little.
They still nourish the already significantly fewer bees, wasps and bumblebees before hibernation returns to them..."

„Ein paar wenige stehen da noch, haben die lange Trockenphase überlebt, und die darauffolgenden Regentage mit durchaus überschaubaren Wassermengen scheinen ihnen dann doch etwas geholfen zu haben.
Noch nähren sie die bereits deutlich weniger gewordenen Bienen, Wespen und Hummeln, bevor auch bei ihnen die Winterruhe einkehrt…“

Meine persönliche Herausforderung für 2022 - ich werd's versuchen - und mein Bestes geben…
A few weeks back, UP announced a new 3-day SoCal-Chicago intermodal service, and much to my surprise it was to be routed over the LA&SL. I was curious to see what time it would run, as in recent years the normal train schedule hasn't been very conducive to photography. The train started running, departing SoCal around 1AM. This puts it on Cima Hill at sunrise, so I made sure to head out last Sunday for my first photos of it. It's nice to have a reliable train for mornings on Cima Hill, but aside from that the train won't have a lot of photography usefulness for me. However, during the longer days of the year, there should be some nice photo opportunities up in Utah if I ever get up that way. And on days it gets knocked off its schedule, it may make daylight appearances in Afton Canyon, which would be nice too.
Saw a few collections of Erasers in Daiso (2 dollar shop), grab it for today's theme.
I was running late so today, so I quickly tried a few settings for the shot.
I placed a pencil to give a comparison of size. I used the wood flakes from sharpening the penciln as debris for the trucks in this shot.
Have a great week ahead my MM friends.
