Looking close ... on Friday : Festive lighting

This captivating night photograph features Boathouse Row in Philadelphia, with its historic rowing clubs illuminated by glowing lights that reflect beautifully in the calm waters of the Schuylkill River. The soft evening glow and serene waterfront setting highlight the charm of this iconic Philadelphia landmark, creating a peaceful and picturesque urban scene.

Last night I was out with my chums, celebrating a special birthday for a dear friend. We went around the annual Christmas light show in the Royal Botanic Gardens in Edinburgh, a very large site that I love visiting, but usually in the daylight, so nice to visit the light show, which I've meant to do for years.

As we were out in a group I couldn't really stand there with a tripod doing long exposure shots, so these are all handheld, hence some are a bit rough (used the mini tripod as an extra handle to try and steady it as much as I could). It's not a cheap ticket (especially if you are taking a family), but it is wonderful to see this already gorgeous, much-loved daytime attraction all lit up on a December evening, different artists working on different sections. We were lucky, although cold the rain stayed off for our entire walk (and it is a long walk right around, as the site covers some 70 acres)

Buxton...in festive mood

The magic of Christmas... dreamy purple clouds, golden stars and a giant crescent moon delight passers-by and visitors to Tiffany & Co in Old Bond Street, London.

I liked the notion of a light being lit up by Christmas lights.

The first day of the holiday break and The last day of Christmas celebration in Spain Fiesta de Los tres Reyes Mages, the festival of the three Magic Kings in Puerto de Mogán, a charming little fishing village on the south-west tip of Gran Canaria. Spain.

as the clock ticks towards midnight, a beacon of warmth glows in front of valencia's estació del nord. under a canopy of golden lights, a churrería stands, its sweet aroma mingling with the cool night air. this is where sugar-dusted memories are made, where churros and buñuelos tempt the night owls and late travelers. the patrons, silhouetted against the vibrant stall, are momentarily united by the universal language of comfort food. it's a scene that captures the essence of valencian nights: lively, inviting, and rich with tradition.

Changing light art installation on the facade of what used to be Fraser's Department Store for many decades, now home to the Johnnie Walker Whisky Experience (not quite as good as the Jimi Hendrix Experience, of course). Paused for a moment to grab quick pics and video with my phone on a freezing winter evening, as the designs kepts changing patterns and colours on the facade, including, at one point, a giant Advent Calendar.

So many photographers care about sharpness, focus, tonality and composition. You have to worry about camera shake, post-production, dynamic range and arrangement of visual elements within the frame.

On the other hand, there is something called worry-free photography or care-free photography.

Just forget about focus, sharpness, tones and everything. Let it be out of focus and let it be messy. Just point and shoot.

How about that? Do you like this kind of worry-free photography?

Early greetings to my Flickr friends for the coming holiday season!

Just to see how it might work, I tried one pic with the phone camera's low light setting, sitting it on a post to steady it, just to compare to the main camera doing long exposure. Not as sharp, but all things considered not half bad for a phone leaning against a post!

What to do on a rainy, cloudy day when I can't really take new pictures........................play with edits on previously taken shots. I really like how this one of Constance came out.

Chicago's Magnificent Mile (N Michigan Avenue) is a riot of lights during the Festive period. This was taken in December 2019, looking up at the towers of the Westin building (blue tower lights) and the John Hancock Center (red and green lit tower).

I love dressing the East 59th ladies in edgy 80s fashions. I think it suits their style very well. The sleek hair, the somewhat harsh make-up and their attitude makes them powerful women of the '80s.

I wish someone like Integrity Toys would make an elegant doll line inspired by couture of the 80s, to prove the world it was a great fashion decade too. (Yes it was!)

I plan to make some myself but I know me and it will take edges to complete because of the million other projects I have.

A pencil topper placed on one of our Holiday tree lights creates a rather unique ornament. Tardigrades (waterbears) are microscopic creatures that live in soil. They are very hardy and have even survived after being exposed to conditions outside of a spacecraft in space. They are an animal that is in its own category (not a tiny bear).
