View towards west from the observation deck of the new Shanghai Tower, currently the tallest building in Shanghai and the second tallest in the world.

This is the big Huangpu River bend, with the Bund, the mouth of Suzhou Creek and the twin towers of the Shanghai IFC in the lower foreground.

I added some notes to identify buildings or other features in the picture, some of these notes contain links.

And, as usual, flickr wrongly assigns "Hongkou" as location name.

Distinguishing features: beautiful

Like North Falls further upstream, Middle North Falls has certain characteristics which one could argue give it an edge when comparing it to the park's main attraction, South Falls. Despite being considerably shorter, Middle North Falls is a markedly amorphous waterfall which changes physical shape in a very dramatic way as the volume of water in North Silver Creek changes. The 106 foot tall falls take the form of a narrow column of water during the summer months, funneled to perhaps 5 feet wide at most by a narrow runnel in the bedrock. With greater stream flow in the winter and spring months however, North Silver Creek sheets out across the 60-foot wide creek bed and turns the falls into a broad curtain of water, with part of the falls impacting on a twisting chute of basalt which then slides to join the more volumnous half of the creek in the plunge pool.

Middle North Falls is one of four waterfalls in Silver Falls State Park which features a trail which traverses behind the falling water. Unlike the other three, the trail leading behind Middle North Falls is a dead-end, constructed purely to allow access to additional views of the falls.

Mistery Market Backdrop - The Bearded Guy

Thruscross is a hamlet in the Harrogate district of North Yorkshire, England. It lies in the Washburn Valley, 11 miles west of Harrogate. The parish includes Thruscross Reservoir and a large area of moorland west of the reservoir

Of the three recent misty shots I took, I like this one the most. Mainly because I had to "work" for it a little more. The first two were taken down by the sea when I saw this scene developing across the bay. Sadly some trees were blocking my view of the line of misty trees so had to walk/trott back up the hill to my home and then find another view point. Wasn't too sure the mist would stay for the 5 minutes I was half-jogging. Lucky for me it did. This shot was taken about one hour after sunset. Living in the north at this time of year it doesn't really get dark after sunset. Though I am glad I don't live further north with the sun being up 24 hours a day. Think I'd go nuts with that lol!

The other reason I like this shot is that jetty features in one of my all-time favourite shots, though from a completely different angle, seen below in the first comment.

The windmills are the quintessential features of Mykonos landscape. There are plenty of them that have become a part and parcel of Mykonos. Visitors to Mykonos can see the windmills irrespective of the locale. From a distance, one can easily figure out the windmills, courtesy of their silhouette. They are primarily concentrated in the neighborhood of Chora and some are also located in and around Alevkantra. These innovative wheels were primarily used for crushing agricultural yields. In all, there were 16 such windmills in operation.

They are conspicuous by their snow-white color, spherical shape with the customary pointed roof made of the finest variety of wood. In the good old days, they were wind operated as Mykonos is renowned for their gusty wind, which continues to blow even today. The Windmills of Chora and the ones at Ano Mera were a great boon to the people of those localities and they were primarily used for grinding the agricultural products that were meant to be transported to places outside Mykonos.

As of now, with the advent of modernity, the windmills are no longer operational. But they continue to be a symbol of Mykonos rich virile past. Being hundreds of years old, most of the windmills have been thoroughly renovated and some have even been converted into museums, the most famous being the Bonis Windmill.

Mykonos windmills are a living testimony of the island's use of innovation when it came to tapping the enormous power of the wind to grind Mykonos agricultural produces.

Robin - Erithacus rubecula

.

The European robin (Erithacus rubecula), known simply as the robin or robin redbreast in the British Isles, is a small insectivorous passerine bird, specifically a chat, that was formerly classified as a member of the thrush family (Turdidae) but is now considered to be an Old World flycatcher.

The robin occurs in Eurasia east to Western Siberia, south to Algeria and on the Atlantic islands as far west as the Azores and Madeira. It is a vagrant in Iceland. In the south-east, it reaches the Caucasus range. Irish and British robins are largely resident but a small minority, usually female, migrate to southern Europe during winter, a few as far as Spain. Scandinavian and Russian robins migrate to Britain and western Europe to escape the harsher winters. These migrants can be recognised by the greyer tone of the upper parts of their bodies and duller orange breast. The European robin prefers spruce woods in northern Europe, contrasting with its preference for parks and gardens in Ireland and Britain.

Attempts to introduce the European robin into Australia and New Zealand in the latter part of the 19th century were unsuccessful. Birds were released around Melbourne, Auckland, Christchurch, Wellington and Dunedin by various local acclimatisation societies, with none becoming established. There was a similar outcome in North America as birds failed to establish after being released in Long Island, New York in 1852, Oregon in 1889–1892, and the Saanich Peninsula in British Columbia in 1908–1910.

The robin is diurnal, although has been reported to be active hunting insects on moonlit nights or near artificial light at night. Well known to British and Irish gardeners, it is relatively unafraid of people and drawn to human activities involving the digging of soil, in order to look out for earthworms and other food freshly turned up. Indeed, the robin is considered to be a gardener's friend and for various folklore reasons the robin would never be harmed. In continental Europe on the other hand, robins were hunted and killed as with most other small birds, and are more wary.

Robins also approach large wild animals, such as wild boar and other animals which disturb the ground, to look for any food that might be brought to the surface. In autumn and winter, robins will supplement their usual diet of terrestrial invertebrates, such as spiders, worms and insects, with berries and fruit. They will also eat seed mixtures placed on bird-tables.

The robin features prominently in British folklore, and that of northwestern France, but much less so in other parts of Europe. It was held to be a storm-cloud bird and sacred to Thor, the god of thunder, in Norse mythology. Robins feature in the traditional children's tale, Babes in the Wood; the birds cover the dead bodies of the children.

More recently, the robin has become strongly associated with Christmas, taking a starring role on many Christmas cards since the mid 19th century. The robin has appeared on many Christmas postage stamps. An old British folk tale seeks to explain the robin's distinctive breast. Legend has it that when Jesus was dying on the cross, the robin, then simply brown in colour, flew to his side and sang into his ear in order to comfort him in his pain. The blood from his wounds stained the robin's breast, and thereafter all robins got the mark of Christ's blood upon them.

An alternative legend has it that its breast was scorched fetching water for souls in Purgatory.

The association with Christmas more probably arises from the fact that postmen in Victorian Britain wore red jackets and were nicknamed "Robins"; the robin featured on the Christmas card is an emblem of the postman delivering the card.

In the 1960s, in a vote publicised by The Times, the robin was adopted as the unofficial national bird of the UK.

In 2015, the robin was again voted Britain's national bird in a poll organised by birdwatcher David Lindo, taking 34% of the final vote.

I finally managed to get back to the river this week - chasing the last of a fickle summer whose mornings now carry a hint of autumn. Until I get to review these images; here’s one from the same spot I returned to, taken last autumn – they have in common a play with colour and texture, the reflected leaves painted almost as brushstrokes. In this case, I’ve pushed the interpretation during processing towards the abstract, but quite like the result so I guess I’ll just have to print it to see if it makes the mark. Have a lovely weekend.

Number five in this series features Stuart, a small Iowa town in Adair County with around 1,800 residents. The old downtown area in Stuart has some lovely historic buildings, with trendy retail shops and varied dining options. For example, Doe A Deer is a home goods store offering kitchenware, specialty foods and other gifts. Next door, the Maven Blush Boutique offers chic and stylish women's apparel and accessories.

Developed with Darktable 4.8.0.

About the series: Life in a small Midwestern town often means a slower pace of life, close-knit communities, and a strong connection to the land and agriculture. Residents typically have a strong sense of pride in their hometown and a friendly, neighborly attitude. Small towns usually have limited employment and entertainment options, but the tradeoff is typically a lower cost of living and a quieter, more peaceful environment. Presented in black and white at night, I hope to capture the essence of a few small Iowa towns in this series. Series Album: flic.kr/s/aHBqjBWTai

For Macro Mondays' #sharp theme

This image features the finer of my two cheese graters. It's approx 2 inches across. We all know that feeling of accidentally grating your knuckles instead of the cheese...ouch....

My original idea used a far bolder, rainbow-coloured background. But given the nature of this important day, I created a slightly more sombre, regal background. Purple has long been associated with royalty, as it was originally a very expensive colour to produce. There are also hints of gold and silver in there.

I also wanted to try that technique of producing shaped bokeh, using a template "key-hole" at the front of the lens. (I've been wanting to try it for aaaggges....) My template was intended to be crown-shaped, fitting with the day. It may not look fully crown-like, but the sharp, pointy-ness seemed to fit

the theme regardless.

I can't call this a tribute to HRH Queen Elizabeth II, but it has elements to reflect that this is such a special day in the history of the UK. Whether you are a royalist or not, I hope no-one would deny the dedication and self-sacrifice she demonstrated throughout her extraordinary life. May she rest in peace.

Early morning in the wonderful Glendalough Valley located in the Wicklow Mountains National Park. It stretches across almost 23,000 hectares south of Dublin. The largest of Ireland’s National Parks and the only one in the East Wicklow, it features wide-open vistas, winding mountain roads and fast-flowing streams that descend into the deep lakes of the wooded valleys, including St Kevin’s monastic settlement at Glendalough.

Ochre-coloured mountains, hauntingly beautiful forests, gushing streams and placid lakes – the Wicklow Mountains in County Wicklow boast some of the most striking landscapes on the island of Ireland.

Situated surprisingly close to Dublin city, and yet with an otherworldly atmosphere, the mountains’ unique landscapes have been an inspiration for poets and painters, as well as filmmakers, with major productions including Braveheart, Barry Lyndon, The Green Knight and Disenchanted all filmed here.

A true flavour of Ireland’s ancient wilderness awaits you in the park. Come visit Ireland

My computer crashed, so I'll have to do a different weapon if I don't get in with this.

Toffee licks his lips, not in anticipation of what he might catch at the

bird table, but after his lunch.

I don't think he has ever caught a bird in his life and wisely has never shown any interest in them as he knows they can fly and he can't.

Made it to day 13 before sharing a photo of Toffee, last year it was day 11. But what's the point of having a cat unless it features in your photo a day project?

Eye catching features on The Chanonry, Old Aberdeen. These buildings are much more recent than the street itself, the name coming from the fact that it was once home to the canons (clergy) of St Machar’s Cathedral, which sits at the far end. The college of canons was incorporated as early as 1240, although canons may have lived here longer than that - the nearby church became a cathedral in the 1100s.

Excerpt from conservationhamilton.ca:

Overview: Water mixes with carbon dioxide to make carbonic acid; the acid responsible for dissolving carbonate rocks like limestone.

This stream has been flowing underground for several meters through the channels it dissolved in the bedrock. This spring is the point where it "recharges‟ to the surface.

This isn't "pure water‟. Aside from the man-made chemicals it probably contains, it also has naturally occurring chemicals in it, like carbon dioxide.

Carbon Dioxide can be found in the air and in the soil. It is a natural gas created by humans, animals, and plants. When we breathe, we add carbon dioxide to the air. When plants

decompose, they add carbon dioxide to soil.

When rain falls through the air or percolates through the soil, it picks up the carbon dioxide and becomes carbonic acid; the same acid you find in soda pop. This acidic water is what dissolves the dolostone and makes karst. Pure water could not do it.

Depending on the time of year and the amount of rain, the stream pH will be neutral or very slightly acidic.

Chain of Lakes Trail, Halifax Canada

Ishkani Church is situated in the picturesque IƟhan village, which overlooks the stunning valley of Çoruh (Chorokhi) River. This village was once a part of the historic Tao region in the medieval Georgian Kingdom.

Ishkani Church played a significant role as an important ecclesiastical center until the Ottoman administration took over the region in the 16th-17th century. Currently, the site comprises the remains of a grand domed church and a small hall chapel, with several other churches and structures recently discovered through archaeological excavations. The entrance to the chapel bears a Georgian inscription indicating that it was dedicated to the Holy Mother of God by King Gurgen I, who passed away in 1008.

The main building of the site is a large cross-domed church that measures 36.60 meters in length, with a width of 19 meters at the crossing. Its western arm is 15 meters long and 9 meters wide, with a height of approximately 35 meters, and a dome height of 11.4 meters with a diameter of 7.86 meters. The building facade is constructed using smoothly cut stones, while the tall, cone-shaped roof is adorned with dark red and green tiles. Following its restoration, the four arms of the church were covered with stone slabs, which have also been decorated with tiles in a similar style.

The Church of Ishkani boasts an unusual plan that resulted from several reconstructions over time. Its eastern side features a raised apse, surrounded by open exedrae, which is covered in decorative elements. The vaulted apse showcases an open exedra, and a horseshoe-shaped arcade rests on eight monoliths adorned with cubic capitals. A rectangular ambulatory frames this space, while a corridor with openings on the side leads to two chambers. The adjoining rooms are taller and have double arched windows that face inward into the open center of the church.

The church was once adorned with frescoes, though they have mostly survived on the dome, while the wall frescoes have faded over time. The Chapel's dome is decorated with Lapis lazurite, depicting the Ascension of the Cross. The dome features four figures of angels floating the cross in the sky. On each side, four two-wheeled chariots are drawn by four winged horses, driven by a standing figure. Above each chariot is a Georgian inscription that talks about the colors of the horses. Most scholars believe this scene depicts the "Vision of Zachariah" from the Old Testament, where he saw four colored horses and their riders, red, black, white, and gold. Within the drum of eight windows, eight busts are set on arches, while the adjacent blind arcade alternates with these figures and the windows below.

Opposite the main church on the south side stands a chapel with plain facades, built in 1003 as per Armenian letter inscriptions. The small chapel features fresco paintings depicting a scene of communion in the apse wall and Christ Pantocrator in the conch.

As part of the rehabilitation efforts for the monastery in Ishkhani, several chapels and churches were uncovered. These included a large basilica, two hall churches, and various monastic buildings. Additionally, several burials were also discovered, mostly from the medieval period and during the Russian-Turkish war.

During the period of Turkish rule, a mosque was established in the western arm of the church. Unfortunately, the church is not accessible to visitors today.

Ishkhani is a fascinating monument of Georgian history and culture, boasting intricate decoration, intriguing architecture, and lavishly painted murals. It is a monument that truly deserves recognition as one of the world's most significant landmarks.

The Great Western Staircase is one of the Capitol’s most impressive features. Its stair well measures approximately 77 by 70 feet, and is 119 feet in height. Yet, it is also graceful and intricate, and a paradise of stone carving. Known in Albany as the Million Dollar Staircase, it was designed by H. H. Richardson, but transformed into an elaborately carved work of art by Isaac Perry. Governor Grover Cleveland called Perry out of retirement to become Commissioner of the Capitol in 1883. He was the last architect to work on the building and his involvement resulted in a dramatic increase in stone carving. At times he employed hundreds of stone carvers and cutters, paying them five dollars for a ten-hour day – twice the wage of a common laborer. The majority of the carvers were from England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales.

This image features the Green Ibis (Mesembrinibis cayennensis), captured in Restrepo, Meta, Colombia. Known for its iridescent green and purple feathers, the ibis stands out beautifully against the vibrant backdrop of the lush Colombian environment. The bird was perched delicately on a tree branch, where its sleek silhouette contrasted against the soft light filtering through the canopy. The calm, tranquil atmosphere of the scene was a perfect match for capturing the bird’s elegant form and reflective plumage.

In terms of technique, I used a Canon R5 with a 800mm f/11 lens and a 1.4x extender to maintain the required reach while preserving image clarity. The f/16 aperture ensured that both the bird and its environment were in focus, while the ISO 1600 helped balance the low light of the forest. The resulting sharpness and depth allow the vibrant plumage and the bird’s intricate textures to come through vividly. Capturing such a shot in the wild, with the ibis being perfectly positioned, required patience, but the payoff was worth it.

The finest hour has come for Kyiv chestnuts.

Aesculus × carnea, or red horse-chestnut, a medium-sized tree, an artificial hybrid between Aesculus pavilion (red buckeye) and Aesculus hippocastanum (horse-chestnut). Its origin uncertain, probably appearing in Germany before 1820. It is a popular tree in large gardens and parks.

Aesculus × carnea's features are typically intermediate between the parent species, but it inherits the red flower color from Aesculus pavia. Its showy flowers are borne in plumes on branch ends, blooming in spring and producing leathery fruit capsules in fall. It grows up to 40 feet tall and 30 feet wide, with a round head that casts dense shade when mature. Its leaves are dark green, palmately compound, and deciduous, each leaf divided into five large, toothed leaflets.

Features SP3G SUIT by GABRIEL and MEPHISTO HORNS by LEVEL IX. Both available NOW at the ENGINE ROOM.
