The fastest animal in the world, the world's most widespread raptor and one of the coolest. The fastest speed ever recorded by one is 389 km/h or 242 mph.
Sometimes, when you are feeling down a familiar face can make all the difference. Just seeing her face made my day. Not sure the feeling was mutual ;).
The fastest dive by a bird is that of a peregrine falcon (Falco peregrinus), which has been estimated as reaching a terminal velocity of approximately 300 km/h (186 mph) when in a diving stoop. At this point the peregrine falcon is the fastest animal.

But fast for a very good reason., it's nutritional needs requires it to hunt down prey and the reality of that is all to be seen here in this picture
Nature simultaneously at it's most magnificent and at it's cruelest
Sometimes you just have to stop and take it in
You can travel the seven seas., climb the highest mountains., dive to the bottom of every ocean
But you'll never find anything quicker than what you looking at here
Breathtaking to think of
I watched a group of three juvenile Trumpeter Swans on the pond in back today. Interestingly, they would work on one end of the lake and then launch with a little bit of flight time to the other end of the lake, never getting much height from the water as they did so. I suspect that it's not only a faster way to get from one side to the other but it's a great way of working those wings in anticipation of migrating south for the winter!

Watching the fastest animal on the planet in action was fascinating, getting a decent shot was another story :-) after spending two days with these raptors i was rewarded with a bunch of nice inflight shots...Southern California
The Pronghorn, North America's fastest mammal, has extra-large lungs and heart to pump oxygen and blood through its system and enable it to sustain high speeds across the open prairie. And the northern prairie this year is spectacularly green. We had a good amount of rain in May and June, on top of the meltwater from a decent winter snow pack. Haven't seen it this green for a few years!
This Pronghorn buck is galloping through a crop field - not wheat, maybe canola. Running effortlessly. Born to run.

I've seen interesting positions in the air from Bald Eagles but this immature Bald Eagle showed me something different! It decided the best way down was just about straight down.

The cheetah is a large cat of the subfamily Felinae that occurs in Southern, North and East Africa, and a few localities in Iran. The species is IUCN Red Listed as vulnerable, as it suffered a substantial decline in its historic range in the 20th century due to habitat loss, poaching, illegal pet trade, and conflict with humans. By 2016, the global cheetah population has been estimated at approximately 7,100 individuals in the wild. Several African countries have taken steps to improve cheetah conservation measures. It is the fastest land animal.
Cheetahs are active mainly during the day, with hunting their major activity. Adult males are sociable despite their territoriality, forming groups called coalitions. Females are not territorial; they may be solitary or live with their offspring in home ranges.
Carnivores, cheetah mainly prey upon antelopes and gazelles. They will stalk their prey to within 100ā300 m (330ā980 ft), charge towards it and kill it by tripping it during the chase and biting its throat to suffocate it to death. Cheetahs can reach speeds of 112 km/h (70 mph) in short bursts, but this is disputed by more recent measurements. The average speed of cheetahs is about 64 km/h (40 mph).
Cheetahs are induced ovulators, breeding throughout the year. Gestation is nearly three months long, resulting in a litter of typically three to five cubs (the number can vary from one to eight). Weaning occurs at six months; siblings tend to stay together for some time. Cheetah cubs face higher mortality than most other mammals, especially in the Serengeti region. Cheetahs inhabit a variety of habitats ā dry forests, scrub forests and savannahs. -Wikipedia

LNER 4468 Mallard is a LNER Class A4 4-6-2 steam locomotive built by the London & North Eastern Railway at Doncaster Works, England in 1938. It is historically significant as the holder of the world speed record for steam locomotives at 126 mph (203 km/h).
You are looking at a miracle of evolution., this is the worlds fastest bird.,, and this is a young but fully grown female which is bigger and more powerful than her male counterparts (natures way of preventing predication) meaning she is the ultimate falcon.
I don't usually get into any photographic technical., but this was an interesting one. The weather was poor (you can see the raindrops) and she landed in a nearby tree. To get a closer picture I decided to put on the x1.4 converter and I took some reasonable shots. I knew she would eventually fly off., but expected it would be sideways or backwards because that is what they always do.,right? wrong!
Suddenly the fastest bird in the world is flying straight for me., and I have an overpowered prime lens in low light.
Put the shutter speed up and the ISO goes through the ceiling! Plus the tracking on a quickly closing object simply wasn't going to work
My only option was to risk as low a shutter as I dare., (800) and attempt to spot focus her when she got close enough... click!
It's for others to decide on the quality of the photograph., I can only look in awe at the fastest lady on the planet
Loblolly Pines by The Little Branch is our new release for Uber.
One of the fastest growing southern pines, this tree is used as a quick-screen in many landscapes. This North American native has dark green needles and narrow, red-brown, often-paired cones that are three to six inches long. It has a long history with the pioneers and is known by several other names, among them rosemary pine, old field pine, and bull pine. Loblolly pines provide shelter and food for many southeastern animals and the seeds are also consumed by chipmunks, squirrels and other small rodents.
These 100% original mesh creations are highly detailed with realistic textures and animated foliage resulting in a true, life-like appearance. A choice of four seasons are readily available via an easy to use pop-up menu to keep your landscaping current. Owner permissions allow Copy & Modify to ensure that each item can be adapted to suit your unique needs. The trees have a land impact value of 3-7 Li and grow as the size increases..
Uber runs from October 25th to November 22nd

After the event you will find the products at The Little Branch In-World Store or on MarketPlace
Pink Ceiba, the flowers of the world's fastest growing tree! The inside of its trunk is so soft that it has 4 inch spikes to protect it from predators... giving it its nickname, Monkey Tree, because a agile monkey can climb it!
The Ceiba tree figures an important part in the mythologies of pre-Columbian Mesoamerican cultures. Several Amazonian tribes of eastern Peru believe deities live in Ceiba tree species throughout the jungle. The Maya civilization believed that YaaxchƩ, often depicted as a Ceiba trunk, connects the planes of the Underworld (Xibalba), the terrestrial realm and the skies. Unmistakable clusters of thick conical thorns on the Ceiba trunk were reproduced during the Classical Period on ceramic burial urns and incense holders by the southern lowland Maya.
Modern Maya still respectfully leave the tree standing when harvesting forest timber. The Ceiba tree is represented by a cross and serves as an important architectural motif in the Temple of the Cross Complex at Palenque.
Ceiba pentandra produces a light and strong fiber (kapok) used throughout history to fill life preservers, mattresses, pillows, tapestries, and dolls. Kapok has recently been replaced in commercial use by synthetic fibers. The oils of Ceiba seeds are extracted to make soap and fertilizers. The Ceiba continues to be commercialized in Asia especially in Java, Malaysia, Indonesia, the Philippines.

A bison bull (the largest land animal in North America) strides across the mixed-grass prairie with a pronghorn doe (the fastest land animal in North America) in the background. I was lucky to see this shot coming. We were watching this mature bull stride across the prairie and I could see that, if he continued on the same path, he would pass between us and the pronghorn. When he reached the right spot a single click was enough to get the shot. Badlands National Park, SD.

The cheetah (Acinonyx jubatus) is the fastest land animal, capable of reaching speeds of 93ā104 km/h (58ā65 mph) in short bursts. Its speed is enabled by a lightweight build, long limbs, and a balancing tail.
Cheetahs form three social groups: solitary males, male coalitions (often siblings), and females with cubs. Females roam widely in search of prey, while males defend smaller territories. They are diurnal, most active at dawn and dusk.
Major threats include habitat loss, human conflict, poaching, and disease. As of 2021, the global population was estimated at 6,517, and the species is listed as Vulnerable by the IUCN.
The cheetah symbolizes both speed and ecological fragility, with its survival dependent on continued conservation efforts.

Thomson's gazelle (Eudorcas thomsonii) is one of the best-known gazelles. It is named after explorer Joseph Thomson and is sometimes referred to as a "tommie". It is considered by some to be a subspecies of the red-fronted gazelle and was formerly considered a member of the genus Gazella within the subgenus Eudorcas, before Eudorcas was elevated to genus status.Thomson's gazelles can be found in numbers exceeding 200,000 in Africa and are recognized as the most common type of gazelle in East Africa. The Thomson's gazelle can reach speeds of 80ā90 km/h (50ā55 mph). It is the fourth-fastest land animal, after the cheetah (its main predator), pronghorn, and springbok.

Thanks to Alex and Ari for the PS help.
"Fastest car in the valley", that was the rumor. ;-)
I took the Charger to the car wash yesterday. Some guy in a new pickup pulls up and asks me "want to race?" So I'm like, well, probably not up a mountain or in the dirt. He smiles and says, remember me, I used to drive a 1971 Chevelle SS, yellow, black stripes 454 - 4 speed. It comes back to me in an instant.
This is the same guy in high school that used to challenge me to a race nearly every time he'd put a new part on his Chevelle. Off we'd go to Highway 27, just outside of town, stage up, and the first one to the 45 mph sign was the winner. His Chevelle was screaming fast, as were most of the cars that I raced on that highway. But I always had the one thing they didn't. Traction.
I'd hook up on the launch and my opponents would go up in smoke deep into first gear, which would give me about a car length. I was always able to hold them off past that crazy sign. Never lost once. Undoubtedly got lucky occasionally, but a win is a win.
Most Saturday nights you'd eventually find us at the local Sambo's restaurant, drinking 25Ā¢ coffee and recounting the nights misadventures. That's when a challenger to the throne would come in and say "hey!, I hear you're the one to beat around here". We'd all jump in our cars, head to the highway, and settle the score. It was surreal in the best possible way.
During our quick visit, "Mr. Chevelle" even shared he was just talking to someone a few weeks ago about how he and I used to race all the time.
His always co-pilot Jim, used to tell me how he'd "shined the rear bumper up real nice, so I can see my reflection as they blow my doors off". Just get in the car Jim. ;-)
Too much fun!
It was great seeing Jerry and meeting his grandson. Don't think I've seen him in 25 years.
