Fastest bird in the world reaching over 200 mph during its hunting dives!

youtu.be/BeulrmrnFL4

Peregrine Falcon

The fastest animal on the planet

But fast for a very good reason., it's nutritional needs requires it to hunt down prey and the reality of that is all to be seen here in this picture

Nature simultaneously at it's most magnificent and at it's cruelest

The fastest dive by a bird is that of a peregrine falcon (Falco peregrinus), which has been estimated as reaching a terminal velocity of approximately 300 km/h (186 mph) when in a diving stoop. At this point the peregrine falcon is the fastest animal.

So quickly we forget the things we see but don't notice.

Sometimes you just have to stop and take it in

You can travel the seven seas., climb the highest mountains., dive to the bottom of every ocean

But you'll never find anything quicker than what you looking at here

Breathtaking to think of

Peregrine falcon, (Falco peregrinus), The fastest animal in the world , when in full dive for its prey, a peregrine can reach speeds of 242 mph . It is also the most widely distributed species of bird of prey with breeding populations on every continent except Antarctica . Another detour taken on my way to work in the morning , The Peregrine having just eaten , with crop full to bursting is still after another pigeon .

I watched a group of three juvenile Trumpeter Swans on the pond in back today. Interestingly, they would work on one end of the lake and then launch with a little bit of flight time to the other end of the lake, never getting much height from the water as they did so. I suspect that it's not only a faster way to get from one side to the other but it's a great way of working those wings in anticipation of migrating south for the winter!

I've seen interesting positions in the air from Bald Eagles but this immature Bald Eagle showed me something different! It decided the best way down was just about straight down.

The Jaguar XK120 was the fastest production car in the world when launched... Originally designed to showcase Jaguar’s new 6-cylinder XK engine, the XK120 was not initially intended for volume production, but following a rapturous reception at the Earl's Court Motor Show in London in 1948, plans soon changed. Becoming more widely available in 1950 its 120mph top speed and styling were unprecedented in the immediate post-war years.

XK120s were very successful in motor sports of all kinds, both in Britain and in the US.

LNER 4468 Mallard is a LNER Class A4 4-6-2 steam locomotive built by the London & North Eastern Railway at Doncaster Works, England in 1938. It is historically significant as the holder of the world speed record for steam locomotives at 126 mph (203 km/h).

You are looking at a miracle of evolution., this is the worlds fastest bird.,, and this is a young but fully grown female which is bigger and more powerful than her male counterparts (natures way of preventing predication) meaning she is the ultimate falcon.

I don't usually get into any photographic technical., but this was an interesting one. The weather was poor (you can see the raindrops) and she landed in a nearby tree. To get a closer picture I decided to put on the x1.4 converter and I took some reasonable shots. I knew she would eventually fly off., but expected it would be sideways or backwards because that is what they always do.,right? wrong!

Suddenly the fastest bird in the world is flying straight for me., and I have an overpowered prime lens in low light.

Put the shutter speed up and the ISO goes through the ceiling! Plus the tracking on a quickly closing object simply wasn't going to work

My only option was to risk as low a shutter as I dare., (800) and attempt to spot focus her when she got close enough... click!

It's for others to decide on the quality of the photograph., I can only look in awe at the fastest lady on the planet

Pink Ceiba, the flowers of the world's fastest growing tree! The inside of its trunk is so soft that it has 4 inch spikes to protect it from predators... giving it its nickname, Monkey Tree, because a agile monkey can climb it!

The Ceiba tree figures an important part in the mythologies of pre-Columbian Mesoamerican cultures. Several Amazonian tribes of eastern Peru believe deities live in Ceiba tree species throughout the jungle. The Maya civilization believed that Yaaxché, often depicted as a Ceiba trunk, connects the planes of the Underworld (Xibalba), the terrestrial realm and the skies. Unmistakable clusters of thick conical thorns on the Ceiba trunk were reproduced during the Classical Period on ceramic burial urns and incense holders by the southern lowland Maya.

Modern Maya still respectfully leave the tree standing when harvesting forest timber. The Ceiba tree is represented by a cross and serves as an important architectural motif in the Temple of the Cross Complex at Palenque.

Ceiba pentandra produces a light and strong fiber (kapok) used throughout history to fill life preservers, mattresses, pillows, tapestries, and dolls. Kapok has recently been replaced in commercial use by synthetic fibers. The oils of Ceiba seeds are extracted to make soap and fertilizers. The Ceiba continues to be commercialized in Asia especially in Java, Malaysia, Indonesia, the Philippines.

Day 12 of 20 of albums that influenced my musical tastes.

Definitely Maybe is the debut studio album by the English band Oasis, released on 29 August 1994.

This was the case of love at first hearing. I don't find any flaws in this brilliant debut. Live forever is one of those songs that will have a special place in my heart and maybe in the history of contemporary music. It can talk of brothers, friends and lovers bond and love.

Definitely Maybe was an immediate commercial and critical success in the United Kingdom, having followed on the heels of the singles "Supersonic", "Shakermaker", and the UK top-ten hit "Live Forever", which was also a success on US Rock Airplay. The album went on to sell over 8.5 million copies worldwide and brought widespread critical acclaim. It went straight to number one in the UK Albums Chart and became the fastest-selling debut album in the UK at the time. (from Wikipedia)

Description in English and Dutch

Mr. Monster arrived at Wroclaw station by train. He had been travelling for days, and he was exhausted. But he was also excited. He had heard stories about the city of Wroclaw and the station, and he was eager to explore. As he stepped off the train, he took a photo of the station. He was intrigued. He decided to do some research, and he soon discovered a wealth of information about the history of the station. He was reading that Wrocław Central Station is one of the oldest and architecturally most unique and interesting stations in Poland. With nearly 60000 passengers a day, the station is also one of the busiest in Poland. First built in the mid-19th century, the station owes its monumental character to a design put forward by Wilhelm Grapow in response to a huge demand for railway journeys in the 1850s. The monumental building was designed in an English neo-gothic style more closely resembling a castle or palace than a public service building and was intended to showcase the power of the railways at a time when they were the fastest form of public transport. The station gained its contemporary appearance at the turn of the 19th and 20th century, specifically the years 1899-1904, which was once again the result of increasing demand for railway travel. Rebuilding work was carried out by architect Bernard Klüsche. As one of the largest stations in Europe at the time, its construction took two years, using an unprecedented amount of building materials and costing 449,000 Thalers. There was only one platform under a roof and the higher floors of the building housed a representative Secession Hall and apartment for the director of the railway, located in the place of today’s station library. Many conservatorial discoveries were made at the station during the 2010-2012 renovation. As a historic building on the register of monuments since 1966, the station concealed many secrets which were uncovered during renovation works. The biggest of these was the discovery of an Imperial hall not previously known about. Mr. Monster decided to take a walk around the station and explore the area. As he walked, he kept thinking about the history of the city and the station. He was amazed by the history of the station, and he was filled with a sense of awe. He looked up at the station, and he was filled with a sense of mystery. He had no idea what secrets the station held, but he was determined to find out. He was sure that the station had many stories to tell, and he was determined to uncover them.

After we arrived in Venice from a truly enjoyable ride from Germany, I caught these different & contrasting trains in the station. It reminded me of the proverbial saying, 'lined up like ducks in a row'.

"I have often said that the lure of flying is the lure of beauty." Amelia Earhart

Fastest spec diesel X3 with 322bhp. Can also get a M40i petrol with 355bhp. Not a bad looking car compared to the old shape.

Adult female is fierce. Looking back just after finishing up the meal (I was not on the menu). Posed nicely for everyone around

This Spitfire is a Mk XIV, one of the fastest versions to see action in WW2. With a top speed of around 440mph, it could climb almost vertically. The Rolls-Royce Griffon 65 engine produces more than 2,000hp and drives a massive 5 bladed propeller, more than 3m/10ft in diameter. The powerful engine required larger underwing radiators than Merlin powered models. The aircraft was a challenge for pilots used to the earlier Spitfire variants to fly, being described as 'a hairy beast' - "Even with full aileron, elevator and rudder, this brute of a fighter took off slightly sideways"

This picture also shows how cosy the pilot's cockpit was.

Spitfire Mk XIV, serial MV293, was photographed at Duxford, in Oct 2024.

The cheetah or hunting leopard (Acinonyx jubatus) is an atypical member of the cat family that is unique in its speed, while lacking climbing abilities. Therefore it is placed in its own genus, Acinonyx.

It is the fastest land animal, reaching speeds between 110 and 120 km/h in short bursts covering distances up to 460 m, and has the ability to accelerate from 0 to 110 km/h in three seconds.

The adult cheetah weighs from 40 to 65 kg. Its total body length is from 115 to 150 cm, while the tail can measure up to 85 cm in length. Males tend to be slightly larger than females and have slightly bigger heads. The cheetah's chest is deep and its waist is narrow. The coarse, short fur of the cheetah is tan with round black spots measuring from 2 to 3 cm across, affording it some camouflage while hunting. There are no spots on its white underside, but the tail has spots, which merge to form four to six dark rings at the end. The cheetah has a small head with high-set eyes.

There are several geographically isolated populations of cheetah, all of which are found in Africa or Southwestern Asia. The cheetah likes to live in an open biotope, such as semi-desert, prairie, and thick brush, though it can be found in a variety of habitats.

Fastest hand in the west.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Thanks to Alex and Ari for the PS help.

"Fastest car in the valley", that was the rumor. ;-)

I took the Charger to the car wash yesterday. Some guy in a new pickup pulls up and asks me "want to race?" So I'm like, well, probably not up a mountain or in the dirt. He smiles and says, remember me, I used to drive a 1971 Chevelle SS, yellow, black stripes 454 - 4 speed. It comes back to me in an instant.

This is the same guy in high school that used to challenge me to a race nearly every time he'd put a new part on his Chevelle. Off we'd go to Highway 27, just outside of town, stage up, and the first one to the 45 mph sign was the winner. His Chevelle was screaming fast, as were most of the cars that I raced on that highway. But I always had the one thing they didn't. Traction.

I'd hook up on the launch and my opponents would go up in smoke deep into first gear, which would give me about a car length. I was always able to hold them off past that crazy sign. Never lost once. Undoubtedly got lucky occasionally, but a win is a win.

Most Saturday nights you'd eventually find us at the local Sambo's restaurant, drinking 25¢ coffee and recounting the nights misadventures. That's when a challenger to the throne would come in and say "hey!, I hear you're the one to beat around here". We'd all jump in our cars, head to the highway, and settle the score. It was surreal in the best possible way.

During our quick visit, "Mr. Chevelle" even shared he was just talking to someone a few weeks ago about how he and I used to race all the time.

His always co-pilot Jim, used to tell me how he'd "shined the rear bumper up real nice, so I can see my reflection as they blow my doors off". Just get in the car Jim. ;-)

Too much fun!

It was great seeing Jerry and meeting his grandson. Don't think I've seen him in 25 years.

Male Pronghorn (Antilocapra americana) sauntering across a frozen field. Pronghorn are the fastest land mammals in the Western Hemisphere, and only the Cheetah is faster. Scientists speculate that the Pronghorn, being built for maximum predator evasion through running, evolved to escape from extinct predators such as the American cheetah. Its speed greatly exceeds that of any existing North American predators. The Pronghorn has a large windpipe, heart, and lungs to allow it to take in large amounts of air when running. Additionally, their hooves have two long, cushioned, pointed toes that absorb shock when running at high speeds. They also feature an extremely light bone structure and hollow hair. Santa's 41-million mile route across the globe.

How fast would Santa Claus have to fly to visit every child ...

Crunching the figures, we get a speed of 4,705,882km/h, far slower than the speed of light, but still fast enough that the air resistance is likely to vaporise Santa, along with all the children's gifts… if he wasn't riding a magic sleigh.

Merry Christmas.
