This amazing little Falcon can reach more than 300 km (186 miles) per hour—making it not only the world's fastest bird but also the world's fastest animal
The fastest animal in the world, the world's most widespread raptor and one of the coolest. The fastest speed ever recorded by one is 389 km/h or 242 mph.
Sometimes, when you are feeling down a familiar face can make all the difference. Just seeing her face made my day. Not sure the feeling was mutual ;).

The tiered building furthest away from the camera is a newish building in the Nine Elms area of London, an area that has been completely redeveloped in the last 15 years. I've been trying to get some decent shots of it for a while now. The problem is that it is fairly well enclosed by other buildings, so difficult to get a clear shot of, and also it needs lots of light to get the best out of it, something that has been sadly lacking on my recent visits to the area. So I finally managed it a couple of weeks ago on a photo walk with some fellow photographers from my Camera Club. This was shot with an old vintage Leica zoom lens which in itself needs a lot of light because it's not the fastest but it is really quite sharp and a surprisingly nice lens for shooting architecture.

Wrapping up my tribute to the ladies with this pretty pronghorn doe. To quote Stevie Wonder, "Isn't she lovely?"
I'll be off of Flickr for a couple of weeks. Time to get back out there for some new photos.
I'm not referring to my favorite childhood TV show about a crime-fighting rancher with a plane. While "Sky King" was a beloved icon for many in the 1950's, especially in the aviation community, that's not the King I'm talking about.
I'm talking about the Peregrine Falcon, the fastest animal on Earth. These incredible birds typically cruise at 25-34 mph, but when they execute their hunting dive, known as a "stoop," they can exceed 200 mph—even reaching speeds of 240 mph! To achieve this breathtaking velocity, they tuck their wings and streamline their bodies. They even have specialized cones in their nostrils to protect their lungs from the intense forces at such high speeds.

Celebrate the cheetah on December 4th! In 2010, Dr. Laurie Marker designated December 4th as International Cheetah Day. The annual celebration was set in remembrance of a cheetah cub named Khayam, that she raised at Wildlife Safari in Winston, Oregon.
Khayam was a cheetah trained for the first research project in rewilding. The research was to determine if captive-born cheetahs could be taught to hunt. In 1977, Dr. Marker took Khayam to Namibia for the research project. She witnessed how endangered the cheetah was becoming on that trip. As a way to protect their livestock, farmers were eliminating cheetahs from the landscape in very large numbers.
In 1990, Dr. Marker launched CCF and relocated to Namibia to mitigate the problem of farmer-cheetah conflict. Because of her interactions with Khayam, Dr. Marker dedicated her life to becoming the cheetah’s champion. She chose December 4th – Khayam’s birthday – to be the day the world would join together in celebration of the fastest land mammal. Wikipedia
A street musician at work on S. Congress Avenue, a major thoroughfare in Austin. The street is a six-lane, tree lined avenue that cuts through the middle of the city from far south Austin and goes over Lady Bird Lake leading to Downtown and the Texas State Capitol. This one man band was captured in the area known as South Congress, often abbreviated to SoCo. The area is filled with restaurants, funky vintage shops, chic boutiques, cool bars, and, of course, live music.
With a population of just over one million residents, Austin is the 10th largest city in the United States. The Austin-Round Rock-San Marcos Metropolitan Area, now with a population of 2.3M, also is the fastest growing large metropolitan area in the country having added more than 579,000 residents since 2010.
I watched a group of three juvenile Trumpeter Swans on the pond in back today. Interestingly, they would work on one end of the lake and then launch with a little bit of flight time to the other end of the lake, never getting much height from the water as they did so. I suspect that it's not only a faster way to get from one side to the other but it's a great way of working those wings in anticipation of migrating south for the winter!

The fastest land animal in the world, a cheetah can reach 112km/h in just three seconds – that's faster than a sports car accelerates! Its body has evolved for speed, with long legs, an elongated spine, adapted claws to grip the ground and a long tail for balance.

Many thanks for your visit, comments, invites and favs...it is always appreciated ...

The cheetah (Acinonyx jubatus) is an atypical member of the cat family that is unique in its speed, while lacking climbing abilities. Therefore it is placed in its own genus, Acinonyx.
It is the fastest land animal, reaching speeds between 112 and 120 km/h in short bursts covering distances up to 460 m, and has the ability to accelerate from 0 to 110 km/h in three seconds, faster than most supercars.
The adult cheetah weighs from 40 to 65 kg. Its total body length is from 115 to 150 cm, while the tail can measure up to 85 cm in length. Males tend to be slightly larger than females and have slightly bigger heads. The cheetah's chest is deep and its waist is narrow. The coarse, short fur of the cheetah is tan with round black spots measuring from 2 to 3 cm across, affording it some camouflage while hunting. There are no spots on its white underside, but the tail has spots, which merge to form four to six dark rings at the end. The cheetah has a small head with high-set eyes.
There are several geographically isolated populations of cheetah, all of which are found in Africa or Southwestern Asia. The cheetah likes to live in an open biotope, such as semi-desert, prairie, and thick brush, though it can be found in a variety of habitats.

Finally got to see one of these! Think this was the fastest model with 144bhp.
Look at them red leather seats!
USA vs UK.
Chevrolet vs Jaguar.
1953 vs 1961.
3.8 litre engine vs 3.8 litre engine.
Turns out, the battle for fastest acceleration was a one sided affair. The Jaguar engine put out around 265 hp while the Corvette had just 150 hp. The Corvette also had a 2 speed auto to get power to the ground while the Jag had a 4 speed manual.
Acceleration zero to 60 mph -
Corvette - 11.5 seconds.
Jaguar - 6.8 seconds.
No matter which one is fastest, they both look sensational just cruising down the highway.

A pseudo forced perspective shot of the two AUTOart 1/18th scale model die-cast cars against the beautiful backdrop of the highway north of Hawker in South Australia's Flinders Ranges. The focus stacking didn't work very well on this, but I kept the image anyway and posted it. It was a little blurry on the car bodies in a couple of places, possibly due to the fact that the lens suffers quite bad focus breathing.
The Pronghorn is the fastest land mammal in North America. In this image, the speedy Pronghorn buck is backed by the largest land mammal in North America, the Bison. South Dakota has healthy populations of both species occupying similar habitats, including Custer State Park where this shot was taken.
Pink Ceiba, the flowers of the world's fastest growing tree! The inside of its trunk is so soft that it has 4 inch spikes to protect it from predators... giving it its nickname, Monkey Tree, because a agile monkey can climb it!
The Ceiba tree figures an important part in the mythologies of pre-Columbian Mesoamerican cultures. Several Amazonian tribes of eastern Peru believe deities live in Ceiba tree species throughout the jungle. The Maya civilization believed that Yaaxché, often depicted as a Ceiba trunk, connects the planes of the Underworld (Xibalba), the terrestrial realm and the skies. Unmistakable clusters of thick conical thorns on the Ceiba trunk were reproduced during the Classical Period on ceramic burial urns and incense holders by the southern lowland Maya.
Modern Maya still respectfully leave the tree standing when harvesting forest timber. The Ceiba tree is represented by a cross and serves as an important architectural motif in the Temple of the Cross Complex at Palenque.
Ceiba pentandra produces a light and strong fiber (kapok) used throughout history to fill life preservers, mattresses, pillows, tapestries, and dolls. Kapok has recently been replaced in commercial use by synthetic fibers. The oils of Ceiba seeds are extracted to make soap and fertilizers. The Ceiba continues to be commercialized in Asia especially in Java, Malaysia, Indonesia, the Philippines.

This is a game the fledgling Peregrine Falcons play with the parents when learning to fly. Talons can cause damage, so the parents have to move quickly!
They don't travel particularly fast, but they know how to get the whole shift done in 2 hours or less that's for sure.
A bison bull (the largest land animal in North America) strides across the mixed-grass prairie with a pronghorn doe (the fastest land animal in North America) in the background. I was lucky to see this shot coming. We were watching this mature bull stride across the prairie and I could see that, if he continued on the same path, he would pass between us and the pronghorn. When he reached the right spot a single click was enough to get the shot. Badlands National Park, SD.

I really enjoy how brickbending techniques can give smooth curves to spaceship hulls. The down-sides are that hatches are impossible to include and taking things to pieces to rebuild with extra greebles & numbers is a long process! The ship is strong and extremely swooshable, which is very important.
More images are available on my Instagram account.
This ship was featured on the Brothers Brick website and on Beyond the Brick's Instagram too!
