Testing ...me with my new macro lens. :-)

According to my friend massonth it's a sphinx.

A few months ago, Amtrak's City of New Orleans had to be rescued by a GTW SD40-2. I managed to shoot it just three times, as even at reduced speed, it was still a tricky bugger to keep up with. Chasing it north from Hayes was tough, but we just barely managed to get ahead. This is one of many rural, no-longer-marked crossings on the IC, and was a spot I shot the IC 2466 "blue devil" at last year - certainly memorable.

This weary and worn former MoPac SD40-2 was really howling as it powered the CONO north. You could hear it giving it its all! It may not have been an 'official' Fast Forty, but the GTW5934 was making good time considering the circumstances. Passenger trains are heavier than they often look, plus getting up to speed - certainly lots of strain on the engines! The Chargers are troublesome enough, they are certainly not given an easy task to deal with day-to-day. Still, when a nearly 50 year old locomotive can still handle it, while the brand new motor can't... Hm, well, you draw your own conclusions.

You'd think that them having to slow, stop, and allow for boarding in Champaign would make getting ahead of this thing easier. No sir, I skipped back to the Interstate to skirt around Champaign as fast as possible, still barely made it. Safe to say my chase day was over fast, but boy was it a fun one.

Taking a break from my Antarctic series (which, by the way, you will be able to see at the upcoming Slidefest on 30th of January, organised by GPP) I wanted to do a quick post with a Dubai image from a familiar location.

I’ve been going to this same location for close to two years now and for some reason I always like going there as there’s always a new twist to the images I come back with. This time it was the clouds. Really fast moving clouds that I initially went to capture in a timelapse and ended up capturing in a long exposure image that I’m very happy with it. The clouds were looking great not just because they were fast moving, but the direction in which they were moving made them look like some sort of rays shooting out from the back of Burj Khalifa.

Initially I was shooting with an ND filter, but in the end I didn’t need it anymore as it was getting fairly dark and I managed to get a 2 minute long exposure at f22.

Heading to the airport, fast.

This is a Collared Sunbird. It is one of the 132 species of sunbirds found in the world. Sunbirds are fast, direct flying birds that generally live on nectar and occasionally insects. They can hover much like the hummingbird, but their resemblance with hummers is predominantly one due to convergent evolution, as they are only very distantly related. Sunbirds are strongly sexually dimorphic, with males being more brilliantly colored, some with iridescent feathers like those in the photo. Like hummingbirds, sunbirds will defend their feeding and breeding territories vigorously. Collared sunbirds are usually found in forests near water in Sub-Saharan Africa. This bird was found near Lake Duluti in Arush, Tanzania. #iLoveNature #iLoveWildlife #WildlifePhotography in #Tanzania #Nature in #Africa #CollaredSunbird #DrDADBooks #Canon #WildlifeConservation

I read a post on Facebook, which was posted fifteen minutes beforehand, that 1989 was leading the southbound ZG4MQ through Springfield. After someone commented saying it was leading, I hauled down to a less than desirable place for a shot, considering I have never railfanned Auburn before. After stepping out of the truck, I could hear the duo of 710s screaming off at the north end of Auburn siding. With only 30 seconds to spare after a lens change, I catch my first leading heritage unit making all of track speed, waking the entire town of Auburn, Illinois in the process.

This view shows the mouth of the sea-cave that runs in below the castle. Legend has it that a shaft once existed that could be used to bring up supplies and lower people wishing to leave unobserved, directly to or from a boat below. It's a nice story, even supported by MacGibbon & Ross, but sadly untrue! The cave, which extends some 80 yards under the castle, has been explored and there is, nor ever has been, any penetration in its roof. The drawing made of Fast by the English 1548 (see Fast Castle #6) clearly shows a derrick crane above the mouth of the cave, that was undoubtedly there to lift provisions up from boats - and no doubt contributed to the 'secret tunnel' legend.

Well, it wasn't really going fast... stupid low light mid afternoon makes it seem like it.

the race for the last bit of bread

Reminiscent of its last year of service on the N&W before retirement, J Class 611 hustles 12 cars of revenue freight on a deadhead move from Lynchburg, VA to Spencer, NC. Following the previous weekend's excursions out of Lynchburg, the passenger equipment was taken to Bristol, VA for excursions with the Southern 4501, necessitating freight cars to aid in braking so as to not wear out the brakes on the 611. This was the first revenue freight train powered by the 611 after its recent rebuild and it is seen here at Altavista, VA, heading south on the NS Danville District.

We want to get everything out of life and quickly. Wear paper -dresses, but have nothing for our sou. Even the inner world.
