This is a green-winged teal drake flying at Greenway Park, across the lake from Koll wetlands. Late afternoon, taking advantage of golden hour light.
In the golden hour at the end of the day, I saw the fox lie down for a nap behind my far apple tree. I was able to get halfway up the garden to take this shot, but it still needed a long lens.
Whilst I was hoping for a good shot of the Gannets on my local headland this Rock Pipit was the star of the show - busy feeding it's young. It was lovely to watch. Food seemed quite abundant.
Known as "cargueiros" (freighters), these troops of mules deliver the purchases to residents of isolated regions such as the "Vale do Pati".

This flock of sanderling already in fall plumage chases wavelets on Nahalem Bay along the Oregon coast.
Best when viewed large.
VW Camper: The Legend!!!
(Text by Vicky Frost)
"It's not a holiday if you don't sit on a camp chair by the side of the road, freshly brewed cup of tea in hand, while your transport takes a breather.
There's no joy like clambering into the driver's seat, where a spring pops up and rips the back pocket of your jeans – but that's a small price to pay for a trip in the old girl. She grumbles into action, making a fearsome noise, before floating down the road. You don't drive her so much as ride her, moving a steering wheel that's as big as a bin lid in the vague direction of travel.
Campers don't go anywhere fast..."
I decided to do Fast Looks (non edited pics).

I make this image public for getting an impression of the AVIF format (can be opened in the latest IrfanView, Chrome and Firefox): Link to AVIF in Google Drive
The AVIF image compression (in the HEIF container) is a very promising format as it provides good image quality in a very small package and is (in comparison to HEIC) free of any licenses. I hope Flickr as well as Google and Microsoft products will soon have full support for this innovation.
Besides the high compression efficiency the big advantage over JPEG is that a color depth per channel of 10 and even 12 bit is supported.
The uploaded JPEG is about 17MB in size, the AVIF 1.9MB.
This sample is generated using the avifenc.exe command line encoder for windows.
I used this parameters:
avifenc.exe --cicp 2/2/1 -r limited -y 420 -j 6 --min 30 --max 40 --minalpha 30 --maxalpha 40 in.png out.avif
The result is:
- 6 threads used (for my 6 CPU cores)
- to colorspace YUV420 (422 and 444 is not supported by the Windows AV1 extension)
- 12 bit per channel
Caspian Tern 8820
This is the third of a nine shot sequence taken in one second. The strike was out of focus but the rest of the shots were sharp. By the sixth frame the Tern had swallowed the fish. Well within one second the Tern had struck successfully and swallowed it’s prey. Often the Tern will fly with the catch and flip it mid-air to catch it in a more easily position to swallow. In this case it was extremely fast food.

the grey heron sits and waits for prey, it waits patiently.
If something comes near it, it reacts in a blink of an eye.
You need luck to catch him catching.
Today he was more patient than the photographer! 😄

Late in the afternoon of December 8, 1968, the 256C West glides under the signal bridge at Ottawa, Kansas, with a manifest freight. This is now the Emporia Subdivision, but at that time it was the Second District of the Eastern Division, home to fast railroading. Photo by Joe McMillan.
Much to my surprise, this fast-flying butterfly landed on a coneflower right in front of me yesterday. Lucky me!
Thank you for your views and comments, they're greatly appreciated. Have a great day!
