A farmer busy culivating the land he works. A beautiful day for it too.

Vintage photo of a man, a woman, and a dog outside a small rural house in Balatonalmádi, Hungary, taken in the 1950s. Dogs, guns.

The Malvern and Cotswold Hills can both be seen in the distance from the toposcope on the summit of Windmill Hill. (Published in what digital camera mag for critique.)

As I was driving my son home from cross country practice, I saw the sun was going to set behind a rain cloud. I dropped him off at home and quickly drove out to capture the panoramic scene.

Steam-powered ploughing engines were a revolutionary development in 19th-century agriculture, transforming the way land was cultivated. These massive machines, typically built by manufacturers like Fowler, Clayton & Shuttleworth, and Marshall, were introduced in the mid-1800s and used until the early 20th century before being replaced by internal combustion tractors.

Unlike steam traction engines, which pulled ploughs directly, steam ploughing engines worked in pairs, positioned on either side of a field. A heavy-duty steel cable was wound around a large drum beneath the engine, allowing them to pull the plough back and forth across the field. This method, known as the "cable ploughing system," was particularly effective for heavy clay soils, where horse-drawn ploughs struggled.

These engines were powered by coal or wood, with water needed to generate the steam. They required a skilled crew to operate, including a driver, a steersman, and a ploughman. Despite their efficiency, steam ploughing engines were costly to buy and maintain, making them more common on large estates and farms.

Today, many of these magnificent machines have been preserved and can be seen in working order at agricultural shows and heritage events, where they continue to captivate audiences with their power and engineering.

Full Disclosure: No tequila was consumed prior to or during this photo session, as I wouldn't have made it out of bed for sunrise. But as the sky lit up this morning over Brasada Ranch in Powell Bute, it reminded me of the Eagles classic and I found myself humming the song quietly to myself.

Close up of a vintage Bamfords farming machine wheel, left to rust at the mercy of the cold Cumbrian weather. Jack Frost was certainly happy to visit this wonderful example of agricultural history! Loved the Uttoxeter marking, signalling this old girl's beginnings.

Hay bales at sunset last week on the only day the weather was kind in the north of England! These didn't stay out long, farmers were frantically cutting, baling, and shifting them before the heavens opened!

Golden hour on the fields near Krakow. A red tractor working the land, creating beautiful parallel lines and shadows across the freshly plowed soil. The low sun casts long shadows, highlighting the texture of the earth and contrasting with the vivid red of the machine. A picturesque rural landscape that captures the essence of agricultural life.

Dinorwig is a small village located high above Llyn Padarn, near Llanberis, in Wales.

It is thought that it was part of the territory of the Ordovices tribe, and that 'Dinorwig' means "Fort of the Ordovices".

The village has a long history of slate quarrying. The Romans used local slate for the construction of Segontium, and slates from the valley were used in the construction of Caernarfon Castle.

Spring is here in Cumbria, England! Daffodils are flowering, blossom appearing on the trees, and lambs...so many cute lambs right now! This little beauty is donning part of the new farmyard fashion collection! Plastic 'macs' are becoming all the rage for Cumbrian lambs! They're designed to protect the young from our harsh weather conditions and decrease the risk of pneumonia.

Inside the old shearing shed where sheep are shorn no more

This set features something remarkable! A Chieftain Mk11 Tank, built in 1968 and now owned by Joe Hewes (@mrhewess). It’s been brilliantly adapted to plough using a Dowdeswell DP7E plough, transforming a piece of military engineering into a working agricultural machine. Captured at the British Ploughing Championships 2025, it’s an unforgettable sight. The power of a tank turning the soil where tractors and horses usually tread, a perfect mix of innovation, heritage, and British humour.

I've had a really tough year of not feeling well and visits with multiple doctors. One thing that has really suffered during that time has been my photography. Today I was driving back from a local high school where I teach a college math class and I just was inspired by the clouds and country road. I wanted a unique perspective so I put the iphone really close to the road. To get the final image, I processed the sky differently from the land and then composited them together.

After the first snow of December 2011, this was the scene on Saturday 10/12/2011 high in the Staffordshire Moorlands part of the Peak District, not far from a village called Longnor. This HDR image was taken about 15-20 minutes before sunset. No doubt there'll be lots more snow to come up here this winter.

The second day of the British Ploughing Championships 2025 began under a thick blanket of fog – when I first arrived, I couldn’t even see the other end of the field. It made for a very atmospheric start, especially with the heavy horses working steadily through the mist. There’s something truly special about horse ploughing – the strength, patience, and teamwork on display are a real tribute to traditional farming skills. I didn’t take nearly as many photos as I’d planned, but here’s a look at what I did capture, starting with the heavy horses in the fog.
