OK, I spend so much of my time chasing the "awesome awesomeness and mystery" of the UK landscape that I sometimes take for granted some of the enjoyable possiblities right on my doorstep. I have always intended to get out with my telephoto and capture some of the cute newborn lambs in Spring. Most of these will only appear in my stock portfolio but I thought I'd at least fess up and reveal one here. This is my first foray into "nature" photography and I stalked this prey relentlessly until the little blighter would let me get near enough for a decent shot. OK so I'm no Andy Rouse :)

PS: I sure hope Canon comes out with an upgrade to the 100-400mm lens soon as I really need that focal range for so many reasons (this sort of thing included) but I hesitate to invest in such a dated lens - even as good as it reportedly is.

Cheers!

Norwegian Fjord horses are a hardy, compact breed that has been used for ploughing and other farm work for centuries. Known for their distinctive dun coat and striking black-and-white striped mane, they are incredibly strong for their size, with a calm and willing temperament that makes them ideal for agricultural work.

Traditionally used in Norway’s rugged terrain, Fjords are sure-footed and well-suited to pulling ploughs through tough soil. Their steady nature and intelligence mean they take well to harness work, whether ploughing fields, logging, or pulling carts. Today, they’re still used in some traditional farming settings and are a popular choice for horse ploughing demonstrations and competitions, proving that horsepower doesn’t always come with an engine!

Old neglected barn in Abbotsford with outdoor plumbing. If it wasn't for the metal roof it would have been in a greater state of decay.

The steam ploughing demonstration at the British Ploughing Championships 2025 was a real treat to watch. I think the only thing that would have met the judges’ criteria was that there were furrows — not straight, neat, or of a consistent depth, but furrows nonetheless! Even so, it was great fun to watch the mighty steam engines working away in the fog, hauling the plough across the field.

This set features something remarkable! A Chieftain Mk11 Tank, built in 1968 and now owned by Joe Hewes (@mrhewess). Itâs been brilliantly adapted to plough using a Dowdeswell DP7E plough, transforming a piece of military engineering into a working agricultural machine. Captured at the British Ploughing Championships 2025, itâs an unforgettable sight. The power of a tank turning the soil where tractors and horses usually tread, a perfect mix of innovation, heritage, and British humour.

Unique finds like this set here. Very very well worn & used set, no box. Wonder if the photograph used here was taken just for this set, no idea, looks early half of 1900's or 70's.

The second day of the British Ploughing Championships 2025 began under a thick blanket of fog – when I first arrived, I couldn’t even see the other end of the field. It made for a very atmospheric start, especially with the heavy horses working steadily through the mist. There’s something truly special about horse ploughing – the strength, patience, and teamwork on display are a real tribute to traditional farming skills. I didn’t take nearly as many photos as I’d planned, but here’s a look at what I did capture, starting with the heavy horses in the fog.
