On approach, there isn't much to see of the factory. Trees and vines have taken over leaving only a shadowy form of the original structure.

Mentougou was the one really depressing place on this trip. It's a factory town whose factory manufactures the standard reconstituted coal dust briquettes that seemed to power every cooking stove in China, and coal dust dominated the place. The air burned my throat, every building was grey, grey clothes hung out to dry, and the faces of the people were visibly stained by it.
I felt like I had left the 21st Century and walked into a Dickens novel. The locals were manifestly not OK with being photographed, so I didn't, but they were actually so militant about it that it was impossible to stop and catch my breath or take a drink for a few miles after this site.
This former factory building in Mansfield, built in the 19th century and used by Retek Industries, has been an abandoned wreck for a while. It's now being completely rebuilt and added on to, to become an apartment complex for seniors over 55.
