After what can only be described as a nerve testing and frustrating day of back and forth driving and futile waiting, I was granted one shot of redemption of an eastbound Pan Am freight crossing the Merrimack River in Haverhill, Ma. A pair of CSX reject B40-8s, a pair of C40-8s, and two GP40s make up the power as they slowly cross over the bridge. The power consists of MEC 5956, 5967, 7534, 7541, 381, and 313. While this shot is far from perfect given the railing covering the trucks and lack of nose light, at least the weather played along well and the location has something to offer. A big thanks to Mike Peverett for guiding me on this venture. Haverhill, MA

Another day of digging out after the massive dumping of snow we received earlier in the week. I think it's supposed to snow again tomorrow so the whole process must feel a little futile to those who operate snow removal businesses at this point, but hey, it means job security.

Otherwise, an insane day at the office that ended up following me home, but I've finally wrapped everything up and I can officially start the (3 day) weekend knowing I managed to meet all my deadlines for the week!

Oh, and don't feel too bad for this little guy. I threw some peanuts in the area of the backyard that I shoveled out, so he's been well fed today!

Hope everyone has had a good day!

At dawn on 9 January 2016, coal scavengers wait patiently to commence sifting through another consignment of deposited waste from the Wulong deep mine, the spoil progressively being dumped into the worked-out opencast mine at Fuxin in an apparently futile attempt to fill the massive chasm created over many years of extraction. 'SY' Class 2-8-2 No.1320 sits at the head of its rake of tippler wagons being systematically discharged. A blow to the city of Fuxin, Wulong mine was suddenly closed seven months later, bringing an end to steam traction in this modern sprawling city in the northwest of Liaoning Province. Also known as the ‘Agate City’, around half of China’s known deposits of this mineral are to be found there, whilst its coal reserves have significantly dwindled in recent decades from over exploitation.

The P-26A marked a significant step in the evolution of fighter aircraft -- it became the U.S. Army Air Corps' first all-metal monoplane fighter in regular service. Affectionately nicknamed the "Peashooter" by its pilots, the P-26A could fly much faster in level flight than the Air Corps' older wood and fabric biplane fighters. The P-26A also had a higher landing speed. Although not initially delivered with wing flaps, P-26As were later fitted with them to reduce landing speeds.

Even with its monoplane design and all-metal construction, the Peashooter retained some traditional features, such as an open cockpit, fixed landing gear and external wing bracing. The P-26A became the last Air Corps fighter to have these obsolete characteristics.

The first of three prototype P-26s flew in March 1932. After purchasing these aircraft, the Air Corps ordered a total of 111 of the production version, the P-26A, and 25 of the later B and C models. Boeing delivered the first P-26As to the Air Corps in December 1933. The P-26 remained the Air Corps front-line fighter until 1938, when the Curtiss P-36A and the Seversky P-35 began to replace it.

The P-26 also flew in foreign air forces. In 1934 Boeing sold an export version to the Chinese, who flew it in combat against the Japanese. In December 1941, the Philippine government employed the then-obsolete P-26 against the Japanese in a futile effort.

In April of 1983, the Denver & Rio Grande Western Railroad, US Highway 6, and the small town of Thistle, Utah were destroyed in a landslide which dammed the Spanish Fork River, accumulating nearly 65,000 acre-feet of water behind a 300 ft. natural dam. By April 17, 1983, three days after the slide closed the railroad and US Highway 6, crews with bulldozers were working feverishly to stop or at least reduce the flow of the landslide. Efforts to save the original highway and rail alignment were officially abandoned later this same day. The railroad would be realigned through a 3000 ft. tunnel through nearby Billy's Mountain, opening for traffic on July 4, 1983. By late in the fall, the lake was essentially drained and by winter, a new alignment for Highway 6 opened for traffic.

This photo almost didn't happen... While venturing around this place I was lucky enough to step on a rusty nail! I just barely had enough time to shoot this and drive to the doctor right before they closed so that I could get a tetanus shot. So it was a pretty eventful afternoon.

Barn Owl, Lincolnshire.

Being located close to the county line, I thought it was about time I ventured West into Lincolnshire rather than East, continuing into my beloved Norfolk as I normally do. I wanted to find out what Lincolnshire had to offer in terms of wildlife.

Road trips in the mornings and evenings were futile to begin with but I have now discovered a few areas where Barn Owls hunt, spotted a pair of Little Owls and a scattering of my favourite Brown Hares.

This I believe to be Barn Owl 36 sighted for the year (now up to 39) but the 16th different bird I have photographed. I am also maintaining the challenge I set myself to photograph a Barny every month this year.

Without any intention to offend anyone for the state of some houses, this series of ugly images is my desperate, probably futile attempt to save the architectural heritage that is already in such a state that her salvation is gone.

But instinct is something which transcends knowledge. We have, undoubtedly, certain finer fibers that enable us to perceive truths when logical deduction, or any other willful effort of the brain, is futile.

L'istinto è qualcosa che trascende la conoscenza. Abbiamo, indubbiamente, certe fibre più fini che ci permettono di percepire la verità quando la deduzione logica o qualsiasi altro sforzo intenzionale del cervello, risulta futile.

Here's a profile capture facing to the distant Northwest. I was telling my friend Sergey here about how steep this ledge was and so now you can see it. You better believe I was careful up here!... a slip down and off this ledge would be bad news. Even aside from this being Hallowed Ground, I took my boots and socks off up here for a more tactile feel on the rock surface. You can also see a higher build in the Altar to compensate. The placement had to be right, or the build would be futile at best. Anyway, this build has lasted since 1974.

To describe the Iguazu Falls without gushing superlatives is a futile exercise. With water cascades as far as the eye can see -- some massive and powerful, some small and dainty -- the Iguazu Falls are a shock to the system. By any measure, Iguazu Falls is a monster. It's made up of a system of 275 waterfalls or cataracts, with the exact number depending on the season. It spans an area 2.7 kilometers wide.

The tallest of these waterfalls, called the Devil's Throat, drops by more than 80 meters into a milky abyss that creates a permanent cloud of mist – Iguazu Falls, Misiones, Argentina

Sitting indoors this morning with the windows closed in a futile effort to prevent acrid smoke smell from filling the house. The winds shifted yesterday, and the smoke and haze from Canadian wildfires swept back into the village. It never seems to leave us completely. It's mostly a matter of altitude. Some days the haze is high up in the atmosphere. Other days it's down near the surface. Deep blue skies have been largely absent since winter. The best we get now is a washed out pastel blue, if that. Today we're back to a sort of champagne tint in an otherwise colorless sky. The smoke smell is pungent; awful to breath and irritates the eyes and sinuses. The smoke often creates otherworldly scenes at sunrise and sunset. Here the sun casts a baleful red glare as it sets behind a wheat field. The foreground looks like fertile Ohio farmland while the sky is straight out of Mars.

A chill late afternoon. A fleetingly opportunist sun. A halo of weak light. The sky extinguishes to disgorge more snow. Home.

Every so often I click on Flickr icon and then realize I have forgotten my last password, which then causes some mad guessing game that proves futile. Ultimately, if I can't turn up a post-it(r) note with the last pwd I will reset but this takes a lot of doing.

I have to say that there is something comforting about coming back to Flickr after about a decade on the platform. I used to be the focus of everything and then now just a place for memories. Lots of the same people. The timeline / feed (is that what we call it?) looks about the same as last year and probably will be the same in another year. A few less followers and a bit more desire to maybe add something new.

Anyhoo, hope all my old friends are doing well.

Couldn't think of any other meaningful quote to caption this photo I took in the weekend and wanted to share. Current family circumstances helped too.

Another rare shot of me using my own light in a scene. Almost feels like blasphemy! Poor Michael got sent off time and time again, using the torch in different areas behind what was left of this structure (really just what was captured here and a bit of ceiling behind) whilst I took my long exposures. As ever, without Michael these little adventures and the photographs I take just wouldn't exist.

Have long found myself drawn to funeral flowers. But not in the sense of the lush and resplendent displays that typically adorn the casket in the funeral home. My interest stems from witnessing the aftermath at the grave site. Removed from the context of ceremony and the spirit of celebration of life, the displays take on an entirely different look. Almost from the moment they are placed on the grave, the life and vibrant color begin to leach out ion them. It's a startling visual metaphor for the underlying death. I came upon this scene the other day and it stopped me in my tracks. Here the verdant green growth of spring had worked its way up into the grim remains of the funerary display. The contrast was exquisite. In my mind the white ribbon was engaged in a futile effort to cling to life after the flowers had already let go. I've witnessed scenes like this all year long. Oddly the process seemed reversed in winter. The cold somehow locks in the colors of the flowers for a few days, adding a cheerful contrast while the surrounding landscape appears quite dead; the exact opposite of this scene. But the metaphor remain intact either way.

Perdiendo el tiempo (1)

Stop time, freeze your eyes in a futile effort to transcend the appearance of the visible ...

Is that what we are looking for in photography; Or just a pretext to enjoy the newly discovered beauty?

During the long cold winter months here in NE Ohio, it’s futile to think about gardening all the time! There are still many long months of cold and snow left (they’re predicting a few inches overnight). To keep myself from going crazy, I spend my winter months learning to do new things. I finally mastered sourdough bread, so now I’m learning to use sourdough in places besides bread, like muffins and pancakes. One reason I like sourdough is because the grains are soaked overnight, this is supposed to make them easier to digest and much more nutritious. On Tuesday morning I finally made my first batch of sourdough pancakes and they were a HUGE hit.

My first attempt to catch the sunset on The Top Of The Rock last week was futile. It was booked until 10:30 pm. I Planned this one better but the place was conspicuously full. It's worthless to shoot through the glass so there's the space in between the sheets. There were two of us trying to get it at the same time through the same crack. It was worth the visit, great sunset and very nice sky lights. Handheld, no tripods allowed.

Our kitty Frodo loves his window seat for looking out and watching all the activity in the backyard, watching out for intruders that don't belong in the yard, and watching the lizards scamper along the windowsill. And as he's demonstrating here - enjoying a powernap when the above-mentioned activities have zapped his energy.

As tensions in the South East Asian theatre worsen, demonstrations from nationalist groups have been on the rise in desperate attempts to expel western influence. NATO backed rebel groups have rapidly grown in notoriety after recent attacks targeting critical EU infrastructure within the region, as well as ambushes against high ranking party leaders and diplomats.

Due to previous reports of rebel activity in the area, Indonesian soldiers part of a QRF were on the scene seconds after the shooting began. Although admittedly their efforts to safely evacuate the diplomat were ultimately futile.

I'm actually kinda surprised I never built an official 'Borg Cube' - I've done a Greeble World but always wanted to take on the greeblist of builds.

Still not as big as I wanted to be, but one thing I really wanted to try to accomplish with this build was the proper 'layering' that's in the cube with the glow underneath.

It's about 2 bricks tall of 'greeble' to achieve the layers.
