Pushboat "Capt. Phillip Box" has moved it's barges out of a 90 degree turn and is heading upstream and will pass Lawrenceburg IN shortly. The stack and tall brick structure are part of a whisky distillery in Lawrenceburg that was built, and for many years operated by, Seagram.

Not a bad way to spend a day working... friend and Nikon Ambassador, Vincent Versace at my side... pretty good surf at Huntington Beach... a pre-production Z7... and a connector that allows me to shoot with full Auto Focus on the 600mm FL.

While at the 148th Kentucky Derby, there were wonderful faces in the crowd. In this grouping, I was playing with one of the camera's built-in Picture Control modes... Graphite. I really love the way the setting pushed the contrast and created a depth that Monochrome simply could not match.
This XC90 from Sweden intrigued me as i spotted it driving down the A1(M), as it had an oddly-placed front license plate. Also, the car seemed to have parts attached to the bumpers, as well as some electrical/mechanical components on the roof. I can only assume that the parts are sensors, and this car is in fact an 'Autonomous' vehicle in testing, something Volvo has been working with for the past few years. I have seen multiple pre-production Volvos driving down this stretch of motorway before. Have you got any thoughts about what this car may be testing for?

Less than 10 minutes earlier the same scene was completely blanketed by fog. The sudden and rapid change in lighting os another reason why I use Auto ISO... even with flash. The exposure changed by a full stop in less than 10 minutes.

I got a chance to spend the last fleeting rays of the day at the Wedge (near Newport Beach, CA).
I spent some time working my way through several different AF Tracking modes.
This one: AF-C + Auto Area + Tracking. I think I like this one the best for this type of very erratic movement.
The sun had just set and this was one of the very last ones of the day.

Catching up on a lot of unposted images...
Recently, I have been playing with remote bird photography. The set-up is pretty straight forward:
1) set-up a camera and telephoto lens on a tripod.
2) aim the camera/lens/tripod at a spot where birds are likely to visit. (I hedge my bet and put out some bird seed on a corner of my patio wall)
3) go back inside the house. (The birds don't like it when I'm outside near the seed.)
4) turn on the iPad and launch the SnapBridge app.
5) wait for a bird to come into my field of view on the iPad.
6) use SnapBridge to focus, adjust exposure and capture the image.
That's really about it. SnapBridge allows me to see a live view from the camera via my iPad... wirelessly. So it is almost like cheating.
Almost.

For two weeks, I out a small pile of birdseed on the same spot on my patio wall. I added to it every day... for two weeks.
By the end of two weeks, the local birds came to realize that there was a new fast-food stop in the area.
Through trial and error... mainly error... I figured out that
1) I can't be outside with a camera if I want the birds to show up.
2) I can't be in the living room with the front door open... with a camera if I want the birds to show up
3) I can't run outside every 15-30 minutes to make adjustments to the camera if I want the birds to show up.
So, the 200-500mm was purposely framed very 'loose' on the general area the birds most often frequent on my patio.
I used the Z7II for it's 45.7 megapixel resolution... meaning I can crop in post to tighten up my composition.
Next up: fixing the perch so that it is something better than the stucco wall. Stay tuned.

Still at the Sacramento Zoo... trying to make it look very much like there is no zoo. While not ideal, capturing a look through the leaves, made this one a bit more dramatic than usual. The out of focus leaves really help diffuse the surroundings.
I got lucky that he spotted me and thought... hmmm... Lunch!
and yes... there is a wire fence between us that I had to shoot through and make disappear.

Tired of seeing the same 'pretty face' we tried something a bit more... alien.
Zoe, our model, was a great sport and helped make some really wonderful images. On day two the make-up got a bit more elaborate with the use of facial prosthetics in addition to the paint.
