Z7 + FTZ + AI AF NIKKOR 85mm F1.4D

This iPhone snapshot from November 2018 shows my newly-acquired Z7 camera body with a seemingly old–fashioned Nikkor lens attached to it via the FTZ adapter (which is mostly covered by the shoulder strap, a splendid elk hide model by German manufacturer Eddycam).

In fact, that lens is fairly recent, it is a Voigtländer Nokton 58mm f/1.4, made in Japan by Cosina, splendid build and optical quality, and designed to look exactly like the old “bunny–eared” Nikkors —with Nikon’s full approval, no doubt. Manual focus lens of course, a pleasure to use, especially on mirrorless cameras where the assistance of focus peaking makes focusing a breeze.

Contrary to the lens, the hood is very old: it is the clip–on, full metal HS–6 lens hood designed by Nikon to go on 50mm lenses. At the time, most Nikon lenses were 52mm in filter size, and this Voigtländer honored the same tradition. Therefore, the old lens hood which I bought in the 1970s (and which, as you can see, is in perfect condition and working order) fit on the Nokton as if it had been made for it.

The Eddycam elk hide shoulder straps were the best ones I had ever used with my DSLRs. I had tried many of assorted types, traditional ones and “technical” new ones with lots of features, and eventually found that these Eddycams were the absolute best for comfort and ease of use (and they would never make you sweat underneath, no matter how scorching hot it was). I had two, a wide one for DSLRs, and this thinner one for the Fuji X–Pro mirrorless cameras I had for some time.

I only stopped using the Eddycams for the unbeatable convenience of the Peak Design system of bags, pouches, attachments plates and shoulder/wrist straps, and even though the Peak Design system is most excellent, I do from time to time regret my Eddycams... Well, they're still in the closet, and will maybe come out of it some day, looking and feeling good as new...

My resident Nuthatch posing in the garden. I got quite excited when processing this image, as I briefly thought I had caught the bird using a tool. Alas the twig that appears to be held in its bill is still attached to the log. Nuthatch have been known to use tools but these records are very rare.

Trying out an old, small, light, manual focus 50mm with the FTZ adaptor. It will autofocus on F mounts, but won't with the adaptor, although the Z6 gives you a nice little indicator when things are in focus manually.

A few days before my granddaughter turned 5, we had the camera out and I made a quick silhouette set-up and grabbed this shot in our living room.

SOOC Basic JPEGs, last shot from a sequence of about 10, Z6 with the AF-S 85mm 1.8G at 1.8 on FTZ, pretty much nailed focus on every shot! Who said Z6 can't track moving subjects?! This is low light, moving subject with bright distracting LED light on the bike to fool the camera, it didn't miss!

From yesterday. Gotta love some blue sky.

I happen to own at this time 3 tilt–shift Nikkors and I thought it would be fun to parade them.

On the left is the 24mm f/3.5 which I have owned for many years, and which is now for sale. In the middle is the 19mm f/4 that has become my workhorse for architecture and old stones photography. And on he right is the 85mm f/2.8 which I have just acquired for tabletop and product photography, where it is sometimes more interesting to use the capabilities of a tilt–shift lens than to stack focus with a normal lens (the processing of the stack doesn’t always gone without hitches!).

Strobist and technical: One Phottix Pro Indra500 monolight on a Manfrotto cantileverd giraffe light stand in zenithal position (angled towards camera), 1.3 meters above subject, firing at ¼ power through a Luxlight 30 × 140–cm strip box with double diffuser; and another Indra500 studio strobe on a Profoto light stand in Rembrandt position to camera left, 1.5 meters from subject and 1 meter above it, firing at ¼ power through a 110–cm Luna octabox with double diffuser. White card reflector to camera right.

Strobes set and triggered via Phottix Pro Odin II radio controller on the Nikon Z7 hotshoe, manual mode. Sekonic L–858D light meter used to balance light sources. Gitzo GR3543XLS tripod with Arca–Swiss Cube C1 geared head. Nikon Z7 camera body, Micro–Nikkor 105mm f/2.8 macro lens with FTZ adapter.
