or my last hike of the year I decided to have wander around Padley Gorge and Lawrence Field.

The weather was really murky and the camera didn't make it out of the bag too many times, my first shot of the day being my favourite...I just can't resist a dry stone wall, a moss covered one even more so!

A moody forest scene where sunlight filters through tall, twisted trees, casting long, sculptural shadows on the mossy forest floor. The photograph balances darkness and light, with the play of shadows revealing more than they conceal. A moment suspended in the quiet breath of the woods mysterious, immersive, and deeply textured.

One of the smallest mushrooms I’ve ever found—barely the size of a pinky nail—standing among wet leaves and moss. Captured handheld on my Nikon Z6II and Nikkor Z 105mm f/2.8 Macro.

Manually racked focus, 10-20 images stacked in Helicon Focus, then finished in Lightroom 14. A quiet moment on the forest floor.

In the southern reaches of Scandinavia, where the land kisses the sea, lies a forest bathed in the soft embrace of early morning light. This series captures the essence of a springtime dawn, where high beech trees, slightly crooked and standing tall, create a labyrinth of natural beauty. The forest floor teems with life, as plants, small trees, and bushes thrive in the abundant light filtering through the canopy. The landscape is hilly, with a narrow, winding path that invites exploration and wonder. As the sun rises, its rays paint the scene with a magical glow, turning an ordinary forest into a realm of enchantment. This collection of images offers a glimpse into a world where nature's serenity and beauty are on full display, evoking a sense of calm and awe.

Poem:

In the hush of morning's light,

Where sea and forest meet,

Tall beech trees in silent might,

Guard the secrets they keep.

Paths that twist through verdant green,

Where ivy, shrubs entwine,

A dance of shadows, softly seen,

In the sun's first gentle shine.

The horizon whispers tales of old,

Of sailors and the sea,

And in the forest's heart, behold,

Nature's purest reverie.

Light streams down in golden beams,

Through mist and morning dew,

Transforming dreams into the seams,

Of a world both old and new.

Haikus:

Morning light whispers,

Beech trees guard their ancient tales,

Sea and forest kiss.

Sunlight's first embrace,

Path winds through the verdant green,

Nature's calm, serene.

Two slender mushrooms rising through wet grass after a cool October rain. The droplets were perfect little mirrors reflecting the first light.

Shot with my Nikon Z6II and Nikkor Z 105mm f/2.8 Macro. Focus stacked in Helicon Focus and polished in Lightroom. ISO was sky-high, but Lightroom 14’s Denoise handled it beautifully.

Tiny twin mushrooms emerging from a fir cone’s layered bark. Shot with my Nikon Z6II + Nikkor Z 105mm Macro, handheld in fading light.

Focus stacked in Helicon Focus 8.3.0, processed in Lightroom 14. I love the subtle glow and texture in these delicate caps.

The forest was still dripping when I found this perfect mushroom standing tall among the damp leaves. The cap glistened with water, catching soft light between clouds.

Captured on the Nikon Z6II with the Nikkor Z 105mm f/2.8 Macro. Manually racked focus and stacked in Helicon Focus, then refined in Lightroom 14.

A tiny white mushroom clings to the side of a small fir cone, its gills catching the last light through the trees. Handheld on my Nikon Z6II with the 105mm Macro, manually racked focus, stacked in Helicon Focus, and processed in Lightroom.

No tripod, no lights—just soft forest shadow and patience.

On Thursday I hiked a varied route from Hope station consisting of; an ascent up and over Hope Brink, a descent through Woodlands Valley, another climb this time up to Hagg Side and along ridge to Crook Hill and finally a descent down to the edge of Ladybower and onwards to Bamford station.

For a portion of the late morning a layer of cloud obscured the sun flattening the light, making it almost ideal for woodland photography. I moved slowly through the woods and spotted a flash of yellow in the distance and made my way to it. To my delight I found the scene of a European Larch tree's encore; the fallen trunk of the original growth now providing a nurse-log for new growth. The mossed over remains of a dry-stone wall provided great foreground texture, so this shot was a no brainer.

The orientation of the trunk, aligned south-west though north-east, suggests that the original tree was blown down by a windstorm originating from the Atlantic/Irish sea (the direction of the UK's prevailing winds). Almost all the other trees that have fallen share the same alignment so it may well have been the same weather event, had I determined the age of the tree it would have been possible to say what year, and even time the wind struck.

A single mushroom glowing under the soft forest light, with a dew-tipped fern leaning in for company. Captured on my Nikon Z6II with the Nikkor Z 105mm f/2.8 Macro.

Manually racked focus—10-20 frames stacked in Helicon Focus 8.3.0, saved as DNG, and finished in Lightroom 14. The air was heavy with moisture, and the forest floor smelled like rain.
