Foot-sore Jarrow marchers reach Trafalgar Square - London 05.11.2011

Departing from Jarrow in Tyne-On-Wear 330 miles away on 1st October 2011, the 'Youth Fight for Jobs' Jarrow to London march reached Trafalgar Square - its final destination - on 05.11.2011.

Commemorating and echoing the historic Jarrow Crusade march 75 years ago this month when 200 unemployed shipyard workers marched to London to raise the nation's awareness of the extreme poverty and privations suffered in the North East of England during the global Great Depression, today's marchers included some great grand-children of those original marchers. This time around the marchers were young people who are calling on David Cameron's government to create jobs, save Youth services, build affordable housing, scrap Workfare, reinstate the Education Maintenance Allowance (EMA) and scrap university tuition fees.

Supported and joined by members and representatives of the Fire Brigades Union (FBU), the National Union of Rail, Maritime and Transport Workers (RMT) and the Public and Commercial Services Union (PCS), the weary-but triumphant marchers' ranks were raised by the addition of several hundred supporters as they marched down the Embankment, past Parliament, up Whitehall and, after passing by the fortified gates of Downing Street to Trafalgar Square.

The unveiling (Groundbreaking) Ceremony for the E. Claire Raley Studios for the Performing Arts at Fremont School in midtown Sacramento. Complete with performances by local groups, speeches, and tours of the work in progress. Official opening is planned for January 2016.

---

The expansion of residential suburbs in the 1960’s and 1970’s left our central city with stately but underutilized school facilities. Fremont School is one example - a beautiful brick and terracotta building in the Spanish Revival style on a quiet Midtown street. It had a ‘second life’ as an adult education center, which was has since been shuttered.

After much discussion and negotiation, Fremont School now is slated as the new creative home for Sacramento’s Performing Arts community. The high ceilings and large classrooms have the potential to perfectly suit rehearsal and teaching needs for the Sacramento Ballet, Sacramento Opera and Sacramento Philharmonic Orchestra.

There are many technical challenges to adapting an early 20th century non-reinforced masonry building to the needs of 21st century performing arts. We are diving into these challenges with creative energy, confident that this new Studios for the Performing Arts will be a vibrant and creative magnet in the community.

For the sixty-four colors group.

Right across from Dixie Square sits this block of abandoned and crumbling apartment buildings. You can rent or buy one, cheap!

For being such a large city, we were surprised that there weren't more people begging on the streets. Of course, there were a number of people with their hands out, but not that many. This was a statue in front of one of the churches. The hand had a little hole in it that you could drop coins into.

I sprayed on the stucco 'till I thought I'd faint

With twelve shades of brown and for real I cain't...

Believe all the blandness, oh no artist I ain't

But it's my destiny to be the King of Paint

Finally, I figured out something fitting (albeit strange) for that song!

Yes, the new Taco Bell looks to be already past the stucco and paint stage, at least on the exterior (minus painting the confetti if they do that here), and that's right at one mere month from pouring the foundation! In this pic grooves in the stucco for confetti (on the top of the walls) are clearly visible.

If the old TB remains standing after all (looks like it very well might), the new building will have no choice but to assume the 1117 address that the construction crew is using. Will the old building be re-addressed correctly when Taco Bell vacates? I doubt it but stay tuned...

www.flickr.com/photos/imperial_fora_of_rome/50067824252

www.flickr.com/photos/imperial_fora_of_rome/50067012448

www.flickr.com/photos/imperial_fora_of_rome/50067824037

www.flickr.com/photos/imperial_fora_of_rome/50067824127

www.flickr.com/photos/imperial_fora_of_rome/50067823992

The Architectural Model of Ancient Rome is the main attraction of the Museum of Roman Civilization. It represents the most realistic and detailed reconstruction of the Rome of Caesars at the time of its greatest expansion under Emperor Constantine in the fourth century a.C.

www.flickr.com/photos/imperial_fora_of_rome/50067570426

Its construction is based on the main archaeological knowledge of the years when was made, starting from the Forma Urbis Severiana by Rodolfo Lanciani (published in 1893) under a project by an extraordinary architect who was Italo Gismondi (with the help of the architects Gatti and Colini) and the unparalleled hand of the moldmalker Piero di Carlo (1906-1992).

www.flickr.com/photos/imperial_fora_of_rome/50067828337

The construction of the model took place at the laboratory of the old Museo dell’Impero Romano in Piazza Bocca della Verità, near the Circus Maximus, first in partial size, to be exposed to the Mostra augustea della Romanità held at the Palazzo delle Esposizioni in 1937, and then continuously expanded with additions as a result of updated studies and new discoveries.

The Museum of Roman Civilization preserves countless architectural models of individual buildings, archaeological sites and architectural complexes of ancient Rome and the provinces of the empire, for the most part made by the skilled hand of Piero di Carlo.

The Alaska Ski for Women is an annual event, held on Super Bowl Sunday, at Kincaid Park in west Anchorage. The 2011 ski was held on 6 Feb 2011 on a bitterly cold day.

The Ski for Women is a big fundraising event with the proceeds going to agencies that specialize in dealing with abuse and violence against women and children.

The ski is part fun and part competition with a lot of cool costumes; there was an incredible turnout considering how cold and windy it was. I was there for a little over two hours and could barely feel my toes and fingers despite being prepared for the cold - but it was definitely worth it.

Good fun for good causes - Alaskan women do rock!

Home of the Adventurous is probably the perfect slogan for this place. When I begin to write something down about this place I honestly don't know where to begin. So I guess I should start by saying that almost everything you will be seeing in these photos is abandoned. This is a former cold war air force base that was basically left to rot by the government after less than 10 years of use. There are a few families that live in the condos still, but I would say 90 or more percent of these homes are empty. The schools are decaying, as is the hospital and all other buildings except those owned by Boeing. Boeing owns the runway and uses it for test purposes. And instead of moving their employees into the empty condos they set up manufactured homes for them.

The weather in Saint Marie is especially brutal, terribly hot dry summers and fierce awful winters. Saint Marie is like an island of condos and abandoned buildings in a great sea of prairie--nothing else is around it for miles and miles. It is true desolation. And when you drive the broken streets and see the condos with those big windows looking at you like empty eyes it is like you are in another world entirely. Then you see the signs set up by Boeing saying not to go any further and that essentially they are watching you--it's like something from a movie. I encourage you to look up other people's photos of Saint Marie and the things you will see will haunt you. Operating tables and beds left up in the hospital. Robes left hanging in the church. Everyone just walked away one day and this is what remains. If you are especially adventurous you can move here--the condos are a steal. A beautiful one fully furnished just sold for 30,000 dollars and there are others for much less than that.

Here are videos I took while exploring Saint Marie:

2022 Weekly Alphabet Challenge.

A is for Afternoon.

Staying with friends in Martinborough. This afternoon we had a walk then a picnic under the trees.

3rd January 2022.

We had a trip to Prague in January – for Jayne’s birthday - we don’t buy Christmas or birthday presents, we travel instead. We left snowy England for a very, very dull and grey Czech Republic. Yet again I was on a photographic downer looking at the weather forecast, grey is the colour that haunts me. Fortunately it was dull grey and not burnt highlight inducing bright grey. With the grey sky acting like a big diffuser I was going to have deep shadow and contrast to deal with. We had three very short spells of broken cloud which gave us a bit of sun and colour, which I managed to more or less anticipate so we managed to be in decent locations every time – generally somewhere high.

We had been upgraded to a five star hotel, apparently our original choice was flooded. We got compensation and five star hotel upgrade– a first for me. The Art Nouveau Palace has a beautiful interior, with beautiful rooms, the breakfast room was fantastic, as was the breakfast it has to be said. We were able to have an early breakfast so were out on foot just after eight. It was very cold – and dull! We spent the whole week well wrapped up. It drizzled for a day, but never really wet us, it snowed for a day, again we didn’t get wet and the snow didn’t settle. We walked 65 mile, spending plenty of time checking buildings and their interiors out – and coffee shop and bar interiors it has to be said. Although it was dull and sometimes wet I decided that the Camera was staying in my hands for the whole trip. Whenever I put it in my backpack for one reason or another I regret it.

Again, I didn’t look at any photographs of Prague before we got there, I like to just walk and discover, with the DK guidebook in my pocket (which is full of photos it has to be said). We like to get off the beaten track and see the grittier side of the places we visit – within reason! Prague has an incredible tram network, over 1000 trams – with many of them Tatra Eastern Bloc machines. The system seems chaotic but in reality it is incredible with one of the largest networks and highest usages in the world. The trams and cars frequently share the same road space with very little in the way of drama, none of the inexplicable and pathetic constant horn blowing one finds in many countries. Once it became apparent that buildings with a grey blanket as a background were going to be a bit un-inspirational I decided that the trams would be a good focal point instead. Where I have photographed one of the older trams against a background without clues it is easy to imagine that the photos were taken fifty years ago.

The train network also provided photo opportunities. The rolling stock ranges from old Eastern Bloc to very modern double decker’s and pendolinos. There are three stations although we visited the main station and Smichov. The main station interior is art deco and has been renovated by a private company. The exterior and the platforms are very rundown with a grim eastern bloc 1950’s feel –but it works! We discovered to our amusement that we could just walk across multiple lines, no health and safety, just keep your eyes open and don’t walk under a train – you’ll make a mess. Smichov station was grim, it didn’t help that it snowed all day and was grey and bitter. We felt like we were in a 50’s film set in Russia, broken concrete platforms and dereliction. With both stations there was another world underneath them. The underground Metro is running seamlessly and efficiently away beneath your feet. I didn’t have any problems taking photos anywhere but I was very open and obviously a tourist, I didn’t act covertly or suspiciously. There was only one occasion I was stopped and that was in a shopping centre – full of CCTV cameras filming everyone else!

We discovered old and beautiful- and very large- shopping centres hidden away in quite a few places. Brass framed windows and doors, shops thriving, there was a massive camera shop with thousands of second hand cameras, too much to look at. Many of the landmark buildings prevent photography, some make a small charge, some encourage it, the DK guide book gives a good indication regarding camera use. Nothing stops many people though, they just shoot away regardless, usually wanting a picture that includes their self. Prague is surrounded by low hills and has a fair few towers that you can pay a few pounds to go up, so viewpoints are plentiful. I think we visited most of them. I read about the Zizkov Tower, which looks like a Soviet rocket on the horizon and we headed straight for it - after crossing the rail lines! Set in a quiet residential area, there wasn’t a soul about. Two beautiful girls on reception and we parted with a few pounds, into the lift and were on the observation deck with no one else up there. There are fantastic views over the city, but! It is through two layers of not very clean glass so you go for the view rather than sharp panoramas. Still a fascinating place, with a nice café bar and very clean toilets – there are toilets everywhere, usually manned with a fee. Places are well staffed compared with home were three students are supposed to run a 20 screen multiplex cinema.

Graffiti was prominent, no matter how grand the monument, some moron would have daubed it. How do they get away with it in a 24 hour city centre with a strong police presence? The place is very clean, constantly being swept. What did surprise me, was that many buildings, that looked grand and built of stone, from a distance, were actually rendered with very low quality brickwork concealed. When restored the building look very impressive, others are missing the outer render from ground level to a fair height.

I need to cut this short really, I like to put a background story to the photos and although it would be better to individualise it to a specific photo or group of photos I don’t have the time to do that. I do try to give specific detail in the title bar after I have uploaded, this is time consuming enough although I’m pretty proficient at it by now. There are many things I would like to write that should be of interest to anyone thinking of going to Prague but I’ll have to let the pictures do the talking. As usual I am unlikely to be selective enough with my uploads, I’m not very good at leaving photos out so I just upload and be damned.

Black taxi drivers blockade Whitehall in Uber protest - London 14 to 17 Jan 2016

Thousands of licensed London black taxi drivers brought traffic in Central London to a standstill when they blockaded Whitehall and surrounding streets in protest against tax-avoiding, US hedge-funded company Uber which is damaging their professional trade. The drivers claim that trade regulator Transport for London and the Greater London Authority have perverted the stringent public/private hire rules to accomodate Uber's online booking procedure. London Mayoral election candidate George Galloway joined the protest, giving a rousing speech outside Downing Street, much to the delight of many of the drivers.

cwd1072 - Super Bowl Ad Here in America, the biggest sporting event of the year takes place this Sunday. It's also the biggest event for TV advertisers. Since we're not doing video here, we're going to pretend that it's the biggest event for print advertising too. Create an ad that would be worth the insane amount of money advertisers pay to run their ads during the big game. Your product or service can be real of fictional -- but remember, we're talking big money! Your ad needs to jump out and grab people and make them want whatever it is you're selling. You're free to add text, etc. to your ad -- but it must include a new image taken this week. Also, if you choose to create an ad for a real product, be creative -- don't just steal an existing slogan. Make it your own!

Well, I must say - again I'm sorely disappointed with my inability to use photoshop. I really need to learn how use that tool.

My studio setup was make shift on the spot....been meaning to take the time to construct one properly, but just haven't been able to get to it yet.

There are LOTS of edit mistakes visible on this. But with 11 mins till deadline, I figured I might as well put it up.

Murray apparently is the subject of both my pieces this week. He's a good model :)

Here the second dress set I made for John. I let me inspired by a picture he send to me.

To adorn this dress, I made a little fur collar with a removable pink bow.

This dress is based on a 3D trim of white roses applied. I created a new pattern to make it. I myself used and applied a tiny trim for a ruffled effect on the rest of the dress. The sleeves are extended by a lace with embroidered roses. The waist is high and tightened with a white ribbon and a small lace underlines the neckline. The dress is fully lined.

This dress is worn by my Merry Skier Blythe doll.
