The model, was made with aesthetics in mind rather than functions, taking designs from various versions of the 911.

Yesterday the weather was inspiring so after the kids left for school I headed out to make a day of it! My intention was to do an autumn walk that I could make the most of the exercise, (my back was stiff and I needed the time away from the computer) and more importantly, to enjoy the lovely colours and misty conditions that were still around after the cold and frosty morning. Sadly I wasn’t able to get out for dawn, as I was responsible for dragging the kids out of bed and making sure they left for school with food in their bellies and clothes on their backs! Anyway, I decided I would concentrate on walking and enjoying the countryside near my house.

So I arrived at the start of the walk at about 9am and upon getting my boots on and messing about for several minutes faffing about with packing camera equipment and sandwiches and the like, I lifted the bag out and wrenched my back! My intention was to do good not make it worse! I had to decided what to do, I was in agony. I could barely walk without it hurting! Anyway, I decided that a walk with only one lens and no tripod was passable and I would probably spend more time walking and snapping, (just like I use to before my bag became like dragging a small planet around). Anyway, off I set, regretting my stupidity, but slightly excited that I would not feel pressured to get the perfect shot and let it spoil the walking pace down to something that slugs compete at!

Anyway, the first part did go well, I snapped, I walked, I moaned about my back and I must have looked like an old decrepit man walking, nay shuffling along occasionally complaining in spasm at my stupidity! Anyway after 40 minutes had passed and the painkillers had begun to take effect, I began to forget my problems and my mind wandered to recording the mood of the walk! Part of me wanted to write a photographic walking record of the walk, the other part of me wanted to make a killer image, but I began to forget and be more myself! Yes several occasions presented themselves that I’m sure I would have spent considerable time working with the tripod in toe, but I had to snap away and let it go! I did begin to think differently about what I saw and I became obsessed with sharpness that I usually take for granted on a sturdy mount! So up went the ISO, down went the F-stop, on went the IS and I got myself into several sticky situations on walls, floor and leaning against trees! I must say I loved not having to carry all my kit, but I did miss my dam old and trusted tripod, even though I curse it for being old and not behaving the way I want!

So on reflection, I achieved my goal. I had a great walk in the woods, I enabled my back to get the much needed exercise it deserved and I fed my sprit with the beauty of the autumn spender just a few miles from my house. The only regret is that I didn’t have the tripod for the last panorama I made as the conditions were specular, but like fishing, it’s the one that got away that one regrets not landing! But there is always another time and I will enjoy the journey!

Choosing the contents of my camera bag in my forthcoming journey of a lifetime inevitably gives me more sleepless nights than choosing those mundane things like where to stay or what to wear.... Finally I have gone for: Leica Q digital (perfect all round light digital street camera), Hasselblad XPan II and two lenses (perhaps my favourite film camera these days), Contax T2 compact camera - because it is small and perfect, and the LOMO LCA-120 because I want a good portable and quick to use medium format camera. And lots of film (if I run out I think they sell it there!..), some books and guides to read. Oh a little tripod and flash in case. A couple of phones. Slip my laptop in and I should have a nice heavy carry on bag with everything I could ever want....

Engineers working on NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope have successfully folded and packed its sunshield for its upcoming million-mile (roughly 1.5 million kilometer) journey, which begins later this year.

The sunshield — a five-layer, diamond-shaped structure the size of a tennis court — was specially engineered to fold up around the two sides of the telescope and fit within the confines of its launch vehicle, the Ariane 5 rocket. Now that folding has been completed at Northrop Grumman in Redondo Beach, California, the sunshield will remain in this compact form through launch and the first few days the observatory will spend in space.

Designed to protect the telescope’s optics from any heat sources that could interfere with its sight, the sunshield is one of Webb’s most critical and complex components. Because Webb is an infrared telescope, its mirrors and sensors need to be kept at extremely cold temperatures to detect faint heat signals from distant objects in the universe.

Mother and Child is a reiterating theme for everyone. This was shot in Pune

on the streets. A woman sells flowers while her child eats some bread on a

busy thoroughfare in the old city area. The mother looked back just for a

few moments amidst the hustle and bustle of people walking by. Maybe a wait

of 10 minutes or so in a limited space behind her.

This is again a very low res image. The internet connection is still giving

trouble. Hopefully it gets better in the coming days.

Dalai Lama Speaks Out

His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama spoke out against China's forced nomad resettlement at the Kalachakra teachings in Bodh Gaya in early 2012. In a rare audience with Tibetans from Tibet, the Dalai Lama urged China's leaders to “instead of forcefully resettling them, building of hospitals and schools for the nomads around their grazing areas would be more constructive.”

The Dalai Lama, who has been living in exile since he was forced to flee his country in 1959, also urged Tibetans to plant trees around their houses and monasteries in Tibet.

Tibetan nomads’ very way of life is inherently connected to the land. Aimed at tightening its colonial grip over Tibet, China’s resettlement policies are a death sentence for Tibetan nomads and their traditional way of life that has been maintained, sustainably, for centuries.

My entry for the Downfallrpg Senator and staff figbarf contest.

Following the death of Emperor Palpatine and the loosening of the Empires grip on the galaxy, the small world of Silla, led by its previous governor, and now senator, Bernon Morillo, seeks to join the New Republic. Hoping to bring new jobs and residents to his small and often overlooked planet, Morillo runs on a campaign of reform and freedom for his people. Having lived under the rule of the tyrannical Empire and having had a whole town kidnapped by the Empire for seeing one of its experiments (Zillo beast in Bad Batch), the people of Silla have bolstered behind Morillo in his attempt to bring them into the New Republic. From its energy independence (solar farms) and precious stone quarries suppling the wealthy of the galaxy, Silla is a planet poised to thrive under the protection of the New Republic.

my 385th photo to make it into Explore. Thank you everyone !

The only other identifiable building apart from the tower, is the one towards the bottom left of this photo. It is away from the other principal buildings of the farm because the circular hollow at the near end was a kiln, used for drying corn, and it would therefore have produced a lot of smoke.

The return of 59003 was well touted and similarly it's movement to Eastleigh was well announced but there can't have been many worse days this year for it to make it's move from Immingham to Eastleigh.

I was booked on earlies at Barnetby East so the prospect of the RHTT's out and back and 47815 off to retrieve 59003 meant there was something out of the ordinary to look forward to.

Monday is the first of two regular line blockage days at Barnetby / Wrawby when the track walkers tip up. This morning they were walking the Down Main from Barnetby towards No 56 signal which is well beyond New Barnetby. In order to help them along and also to get them out of the way as quickly as possible I will, where possible, route anything I can down the goods to avoid hindering their progress.

When the circuit phone piped up and Ulceby announced

"6F17 and 0Z59"

Brock immediately said

"the first is 8 early John and the second is 20 early"

which meant there was only one answer....

"we'll have'em down the goods then"

Talk about shooting yourself in the foot !

I also felt for all those wretched soles on the station huddling under the bridge and on the platform, all hoping I suspect to see the train on the main.

These two shocking pictures weren't going to go up but I thought I better had post them up as it is certainly a newsworthy event and thus I suppose I ought to record it on here.

It seemed a busy old day at Barnetby, the roster clerk asled me to stop on for a further four hours during the course of the shift and when I left at 17.50 after 12 hours I had a quick count up and I'd signalled over a hundred trains, it keeps you fit does the B.East. :)

I'm thankful for Adenosine, which is shown in this molecular model. Adenosine is also known as adenine monophosphate, a substance very important to living things, including us. In the model, black spheres represent Carbon atoms, red, Oxygen, blue, Nitrogen, white, Hydrogen, yellow-orange, Phosphorus. The rods represent bonds between the atoms. The dotted lines have to do with electron location. The graphic is from en.wikipedia.org, which allows such use.

Adenosine is made of Adenine, the structure with a pentagon and a hexagon, plus extensions, on the left. Another building block of adenosine is a phosphate group, which is the Phosphorus on the right, and the surrounding four Oxygens. The rest of the model shows deoxyribose, a five-carbon sugar. This entire structure is a Nitrogen Base, and there are, as you probably know, four types of these found in DNA. The DNA molecule carries hereditary information, coded by the sequence of AT, TA, CG and GC pairs in the center of the double helix that is DNA. Adenosine and the other similar Nitrogen bases, along with phosphate and deoxyribose, a sugar, make up DNA. The photo in the background is of three girls, and was taken at a public event. I didn't ask their relationship, but am 90% sure that the one on the left, and the one on the right, are identical. That means that they have the same DNA. More commonplace, and no less amazing, is that you have the same DNA, too. That is, all but a few of your cells have the same DNA as all the other cells in your body. The hereditary information that gives the left part of your nose its shape also gives the mirror image of that shape to the right half of your nose. Your feet look alike. And so on.

Besides helping carry hereditary information, adenosine is involved in our use of energy. It does so as ATP, which is the same as the molecule modeled, except that there are two more phosphate groups, in a chain. The bonds between these groups are high-energy bonds. When we metabolize food, we take the energy of food, and store it, usually briefly, as ATP. That ATP can go anywhere in a cell, and give up its energy, as it disconnects with a phosphate group.

The ability of these atoms to form these bonds, and the properties of the molecules that result from this, is so remarkable that I believe that God designed Carbon, Nitrogen, Oxygen, Hydrogen and Phosphorus to act like they do. I can't prove this, nor can it be disproved. Thanks for looking!

Winter is always so beautiful when snow covered grounds dominate the landscape, and when here at Duke Farms Nature Preserve as one can explore the wide range of wonderful scenes, it only makes it that much better . . .

Occasionally we would see the ice covered lakes with winter fowls, and on this particular day, we spotted the stunningly beautiful Wood Duck(s) navigating a way to walk across the surface without slipping. It was amusing to watch, for they, too, like us, did not have it that easily in the effort to traverse the icy lake-top.

The late, Doris Duke, had left a wonderful legacy in converting a good portion of her magnificent estate into a Natural Wildlife Preserve for the public’s education and enjoyment—just short of 1,000 of the almost 3,000 acres is open to visitors. The other area is restricted to staff and for a wide range of projects. The paths throughout the estate offer such splendid scenery. One is forever exploring, always seeing something beautiful. There are so many pleasant surprises, from the general landscape scenery with the many lakes, ponds, and waterfalls, plus old stone structures in bridges and buildings, to the world of birds and other wildlife, including furry critters, tiny insects, and wonderful plants, from fascinating wildflowers to such impressive trees. The bucolic nature of the preserve is so relaxing—akin to meditating while experiencing the preserve. Also, if one appreciates fine, classic sculptures, some of Doris Duke’s collection can be seen around the park, including the statue garden court within the old hay barn ruin.

There is no “best” time to visit, for throughout the year’s seasonal changes, visitors will never leave disappointed, for each trip offers something memorable.

CHECK OUT OUR ALBUMS ON DUKE FARMS, FOR IT IS SUCH A WONDERFUL PLACE FOR ALL TO ENJOY AND LEARN ABOUT NATURE’S ENDLESS GIFTS.

This particular shot is one for a group here on Flickr ( Weekly Photo Challenge ) that hosts a weekly photo challenge for all of its members. The idea is that they provide you with a theme and you have a week to come up with an idea and produce the shot. Depending on what the theme is, it can really make you work outside of your comfort zone as it forces you to look at things differently than you may have before. In this instance, the weekly challenge was to shoot a name brand and this is my entry for the challenge. The hard part wasn't coming up with a brand to shoot (Guinness is a pretty obvious choice for me) but actually coming up with a decent shot was. I haven't really tried any shots like this in the past so there was quite a bit of experimentation before coming up with the final product.

This particular shot was taken on the antique wooden chest that we are currently using as a coffee table. I placed a piece of glass on on top of it so I could create a faint reflection and then placed a black backdrop behind the subjects. The only light I used was from the living room window. I did do some editing in CS3 before adding the border and that was it. One of the best parts about the whole exercise was that besides learning a few things along the way, I got to drink my subject afterwards. :-)

As always, any comments and suggestions on how to improve are appreciated. :-)

Yeah... LEGO Fire trucks kinda suck eh?

--

Thank you Isaac and Ryan for your kind donations and making both this kid (me) as well as other kids very happy this holiday season :)

Over the past year I have been incredibly lucky to cross off many LEGO "must dos" off my bucket list, and one of them was to partake in Creations for Charity - both as a donor (1) (2) and as a purchaser.

Going into the purchase phase I was out to get what I would consider 'iconic' builds of my favorite builders I was very lucky that Ryan put up his crate, it might not have been his most iconic build, but it's iconic to me - as I believe that was the first ever build I saw of his...

And well ... I kinda twisted Isaac's arm to give up one of his prized Firetrucks (And yes you can still borrow this for shows...)

Cheers guys.

Funding for this former Carnegie library was granted on February 13, 1901 in the form of $50,000. It was open to the public as a community library from 1903 to 1970. The structure now functions as Webster House, a dormitory on the Union College campus at the corner of Union Street and Seward Place.

Schenectady, New York is a charming small city, with a 2020 population around 67,000. It is situated to the northwest of Albany in the Mohawk Valley. Founded by Dutch colonists in the 17th century, the community's name is derived from the Mohawk word skahnéhtati, meaning "beyond the pines."

The city serves as the shire town of Schenectady County.
