The Eta Aquariids meteor shower happens in May each year and is one of those astronomical events that the press and media all seem to have stories about, telling us how good it’s gonna be. One night in May of 2021, I sat on the sands of Seven Mile Beach at Gerroa, Australia, shooting a time-lapse, hoping to capture some of the flashes of fairy light. Of the 312 shots in my sequence, only six caught any meteors.
Before packing up and making the 110 km drive home, I took a few simple images of the Moon as it rose over the Tasman Sea. In this shot I’m posting today, the sunlit portion of the Moon was a fat crescent. The Sun’s light reflected off the Earth’s clouds and seas, known as “Earthshine”, lit up the parts of the Moon where, you might say, the Sun didn’t shine. If you zoom in on the photo, you can make out some of the Moon’s seas in the earthlit portion of its orb.
Shining green from the chemicals mixed within it, a fisherman’s glow-float was lying on the sand, giving another point of interest to my composition. Piles of foam, frothed up by recent storms along the coast, stretched along the beach like dirty meringue atop a vast dessert.
This photo is a single-frame shot captured with my Canon EOS 6D camera and a Yongnuo 50mm f/1.4 lens @ f/1.8, using an exposure time of 6.0 seconds @ ISO 6400.
Another image from yesterday of Godrevy Lighthouse. This can be quite a dangerous spot to stand, probably safest on a receding tide when the sea is not too rough.
Thanks to all the folks who have taken the time to leave encouraging remarks on my images recently.

I don't remember exactly what was going on here (other than us dorks standing on the shoulder of US 45 in Tuscola, Illinois, eliciting honks from passing motorists) but somebody probably told a real groaner of a joke. I'm not naming names, but you all know who you are.
These spiky foam wedges, seen here in ESA’s Maxwell test chamber, cover the walls of facilities that simulate the endless void of space.
This ‘anechoic’ foam absorbs radio signals, enabling radio-frequency testing without any distorting reflections from the chamber walls. In addition, it also absorbs sound – making these chambers eerily quiet places to work.
The Maxwell test chamber – part of ESA’s ESTEC test centre in Noordwijk, the Netherlands – performs electromagnetic compatibility testing, ensuring all systems aboard a satellite can operate together without harmful interference.
Maxwell’s metal walls form a ‘Faraday cage’, screening out all external electromagnetic energy such as TV broadcasts and mobile phone signals.
ESTEC’s dedicated antenna test facilities – comprising the Hertz chamber for full satellites and the smaller Compact Antenna Test Range for antennas – are similarly fitted with metal walls and lined with anechoic foam.

A foam bubble. Inspired by the ad from Sony for their Alpha Cameras. www.sony.co.uk/images/
downstream slightly from a waterfall the foam winds its way through the rocks.
A long exposure of 13 seconds @ F18 with a cokin ND8 caught the movement. Part of the waterfall that cuased the foam can bee seen in the top right corner

CN 5442 and CN 2026 lead CN 331 through Brantford only minutes after an intense August thunder storm rolled through.
The summer of 2014 was an enjoyable one, with CN being power short, you never knew what would be coming! Second hand units in the form of ex Oakway SD60's and ex UP C40-8's were a foamer favorite.
A special excursion train headed by N&W 522 heads west through Roanoke as rail buffs get their foam of the day
