The first of two semi-static posed figures of the creature from the 1979 film, Alien. Hand sculpted, hand painted. This version depicts the beast as it would have appeared in several promotional test shots during pre-production, the air duct scene where Captain Dallas met his end as well as a deleted scene appearing within the corridor while Parker and Lambert were making their desperate escape.

Figure is approx. 3" high from highest point on head to the feet. Articulated neck, shoulders, elbows, wrists. Vacuum formed PETG dome is removable.

Original was sculpted using Aves FIXIT sculpt, a two part epoxy. Parts were cast in resin and assembled to build this version. Used Model Masters Polly Scale and Tamiya acrylics.

The screw and bolt lottery.

Sculpt update on various projects...

- 1:18 scale Newborn from Alien: Resurrection

- 1:18 scale Egg Layer Xenomorph from Aliens: Defiance

- 1:18 scale "The Beast" from ALIEN (79)

and a couple more images from the 1:18 scale Sleep Chamber (NOSTROMO) project.

For the Newborn and the Egg Layer Xenomorph, it's all about hands. I've created the frames for the hands I will be sculpting this week. For the Egg Layer Xeno, I want to sculpt a "neutral" hand which is nothing more than an enlarged version of the original ALIEN 79 hand so that will be fun.

For the ALIEN 79 "Beast"...I am happy with what I have done with the figure but I see where improvements can be made. The head sculpt has never been 100% for me...and I think with a little tweaking I can get it there. I'm also thickening the lower abdomen sculpt as its proportion to the upper rib cage is a tad overblown. I'll post a separate update to explain all that later.

Finally, I wanted to shoot a couple more images of Parker from the Sleep Chamber build just to get a couple more shots of that hand before I sculpt over it with another one. LOL!..and I shot another image of Ripley because it was just there. LOL! This was the shot Ridley wanted but the production company thought nudity (although logical in this circumstance) would limit the number of people that would see the film so he chose the alternative (the ridiculous bands across the chest) that didn't see the light of day anyway! LOL!

OK! See? I'm still kickin' out updates! LOL! I hope you all are safe and doing as well as you can with the current state of things. Hope my little updates can break up some of the monotony out there.

Thanks for looking! More to come!

From the Gamerverse line. This was a Wal-Mart clearance item that we wouldn't have even picked up then (We don't need another Cap) except it does have the Joe Fixit BAF piece.

This is one of those annoying tactics where they release the same figure again, just with different paint ops, and call it "stealth" or whatever. It saves them tremendous money by not having to go through the process of designing a new figure and they know we will need that fig if we want to complete the BAF. We ignore this scam at retail but, obviously, will pick up the fig at clearance.

But, since I don't see us ever using this Cap figure in the story, that just means we paid $7 for the BAF piece. 😣

Build update on the MU/TH/UR 6000 chamber - ALIEN 79 - Nostromo 1:18 scale. Possibly my last bit of updates to the MU/TH/UR build. Waiting on some resin to cast the control panels to the entryway door then this project will be tabled and figure sculpting will commence! Will finish the control chair as well. I'll be needing to create a shell that will encompass the chamber along with the corridor leading to the entrance from the bridge. It will need to allow room for the fiber optics to set in. If it's ever to be put on display, it will be tricky. I'll have to cross that bridge when I come to it. More to come! #alien #nostromo #muthur6000 #weylandyutani #buildingbetterworlds #diorama #scratchbuilding

Sculpt update on the Space Jockey - 1:18 scale - ALIEN (79).

Material used - Aves FIXIT Sculpt from Aves Clay

Completed the sculpt of the "control sticks" for each hand, "the interface" and detail along the back of the pilot's chair. I want to tackle the upper rear of the pilot chair before moving onto another project. Been a couple additional weeks than I planned to work on this piece but I'm "in the zone" so to speak and want to continue while not suffering a loss of interest. I'm doing this in my own time and not for a client so I have that luxury.

Crazy to think I look at this piece as becoming an "action figure accessory" or some part of a 1:18 scaled play set. It's where my mindset is...always has been since this ALIEN 79 project started. It just so happens that it's a sculpture study at the same time LOL!

I've taken care to be as accurate as possible to the Giger production version of the doomed pilot but I'm sure a few spots have emerged as "best interpretation" at this point. I'm not looking to be 100% spot on. I don't think anyone who has taken on this project has. I hope those of you who are die hard Space Jockey fans will be forgiving.

This is one of 2 pieces that I will have in the show The Little Golden Years at Bear & Bird Gallery in Lauderhill, Florida. Curated by Heidi Kenney, this show celebrates the many wonderful stories of the Little Golden Books.

An awesome Busytown setup on the kiddos toy shelf, so I had to snap a photo. I actually think these toys are pretty cool, they're radical action figures for lil' kids.

Plus seeing as how it's April Fool's Day and all, I had to sneak a non-superhero-gijoe-starwars-thundercats-robot photo into the mix!

Nostromo Main Air Lock - 1:18 scale UPDATE. ALIEN (1979). Spent some time creating the interior wall racking using butyrate tubing. Took some time to get the hang of it and I may still want to go back and redo a couple because of irregularities but all in all they turned out pretty nice for it being my first time using the tube material. Next up for this project will be the finer detail to the interior walls as well as the ceiling build. I've attached some updated images of my progress. #alien #nostromo #airlock

THRILLING isn't the word to describe what I'm feeling right now after receiving these pictures from Jean-Pierre Jeunet this morning of my Newborn (Alien: Resurrection) head sculpt on display along with various other miniatures made by fellow artists, Kazuhito Kimura, Dominique Roche and the director himself, Jean-Pierre Jeunet!

So happy and thankful once again for the opportunity to contribute to a beautiful display full of brilliant work. I'm honored to be part of it!

If you're visiting Lyon, France before May 19, 2019, be sure to take some time to check out the Caro/Jeunet exhibit at the Musée Miniature et Cinéma and say hello to my little guy. He may be a little homesick but he's in good company

Sculpt update on the Space Jockey - 1:18 scale - ALIEN 79. After a few video updates, thought I'd produce a few pictorial updates on my progress.

Phase II has begun, building and sculpting the forward section of the creature's vessel. This section will support the large "cannon" that towers over the doomed pilot (to be sculpted later).

I've also added 1/2 inch more to the base of the sculpture, as the original proportions didn't match up to the amount of space needed to produce the lower half of the sculpt below the creature's body. This was done by creating a 1/2 styrene frame, attaching it to the base and sculpting over it. Originally it was a full inch but I realized quickly it was too much and reduced accordingly. I'm happy with how it looks now, not only in its own proportions but to the scale of the 1:18 EVA figures that I'm also working on (seen in the shots).

Do I continue on or take a break? I need to take a pause and work on other projects to keep things fresh. Not that I won't work on this while taking on other builds but I need to get into those projects first and bring this back into the fold later. It's that or I keep working on this and let the other projects gather dust. Not cool with doing that.

Hope you enjoy the video updates I've posted recently. You can find them all in one place on my youtube page that I'm slowly populating.

New post on Restoring Lake Pedder

In 1955, 24,000 hectares of South West Tasmania, including the isolated and beautiful Lake Pedder, was proclaimed as the Lake Pedder National Park

In 1965, I moved to Tasmania's north-west coast to teach at Ulverstone High School. The following year, I moved to Launceston and taught at Riverside High School, while my husband to be Lindsay moved to Launceston from the Blue Mountains. We met and both became members of the Launceston Walking Club. We had many trips into Lake Pedder

The Launceston Walking Club bus, full of eager walkers, would depart Launceston on a Friday at 5 pm and drive through the night to South West Tasmania, where it would park by a walking track. This track became accessible after the building of the Strathgordon Road. By moonlight, at midnight, the party would put on their packs, walk into Lake Pedder and pitch their tents. Saturday was for exploring the area and climbing the fringing mountains. We walked out to the bus on Sunday and at 2pm left for Launceston in order to be back at work on Monday morning. Lake Pedder was an inspiring place of great beauty and tranquility. I will never forget the first long midnight walk, by moonlight, into Lake Pedder.

We all believed Lake Pedder was protected by its National Park status.

However, by 1967 it became clear that the government, led by Eric Reece and Hydro Electric Commission by Commissioner Allan Knight, had plans to modify the National Park and that Lake Pedder would become inundated. Members of The Launceston Walking Club and The North West Walking Club had some keen and vibrant young conservationists. We established the Save Lake Pedder National Park Committee led by Peter Sims of Devonport. Lindsay and I were very active on this committee. Through articles in the local paper and slide presentations of the magnificent Lake Pedder the committee raised money. Some of this money was used to fly politicians into Lake Pedder from Launceston airport. I interviewed them on their return and wrote stories about their impressions of Lake Pedder, which were published in the Launceston Examiner.

Road access for dam construction was first established via the Strathgordon Rd. Once the Scotts Peak Dam Road was built, members of the Save Lake Pedder National Park Committee set up a large tent on the side of the road on several weekends and handed out information and hot drinks to passers by to educate them about the scheme. I remember one freezing winter night camped by the side of the road expecting the new NASA space blanket to keep me warm – it didn’t.

In Hobart, the South West Committee was established to alert the public to the beauty of this lake and the importance of saving it from inundation. This committee later became the South-West Action Committee, which in 1976 became the Tasmanian Wilderness Society.

Many brains were focused on trying to find another solution to drowning the lake. Alternatives were proposed that would have avoided flooding the lake, with only a small loss of power generation capacity, but these never received serious consideration. Despite the community being behind the efforts to save the lake, the Premier, Eric Reece, and Allan Knight of the Hydro-Electric Commission were determined to proceed.

Lindsay and I married in August 1969 with many of our friends from the Save Lake Pedder National Park Committee in attendance. After the birth of our child Georgie, we left Tasmania in 1970 with heavy hearts that we had, so far, not managed to save the lake. Lindsay had obtained a surveying job in Gladstone, Queensland. We followed the Lake Pedder saga from Queensland.

During this time opposition to the flooding of Lake Pedder extended well beyond Tasmania and spread throughout Australia and internationally. The focus on the South West Tasmania Wilderness area as an environmental battleground increased interest in the area, and many travelled to Lake Pedder before it was flooded to see what the issues were about.

In December 1971 we returned to Launceston so that Lindsay could continue his study and complete his qualifications to become a surveyor, which he had begun in Tasmania. We took Georgie walking with the Launceston Walking Club and joined the continuing protests to stop the scheme.

The Federal Government was inundated with petitions. Whitlam flew to Tasmania to see the situation for himself. In July, the Federal Government recommended a moratorium on the flooding but achieved little other than infuriating the Tasmanian ALP Premier Eric Reece.

In 1972, Premier Reece approved the flooding of Lake Pedder, which proceeded despite a determined protest movement and a blank cheque offer from Prime Minister Gough Whitlam to preserve the Lake Pedder area. Reece refused Whitlam's offer, stating that he would "not have the Federal Government interfering with the sovereign rights of Tasmania”.

Lindsay and I have always been conservationists and it was an interesting situation in our household when we were fighting the drowning of Lake Pedder while my father was manager of Humes Steel Ltd. He had spent many years working closely with the Hydro Electric Commission helping to establish the Power Stations in Central Tasmania, which so efficiently provided power to Tasmania and attracted international companies, which used the cheap power. We could see the value of Hydro Power but wanted Lake Pedder eliminated from the Upper Gordon River hydroelectric generation scheme.

In March 1972 on the last weekend aircraft were permitted to land on the beach, Lindsay and I decided that we would fly into Lake Pedder taking Georgie with us. Dad decided he would like to come too. So, we booked the flight and packed our tent, clothes and food.

On that magnificent long weekend in March, we left Hobart airport in a light plane and flew to Lake Pedder to camp for the last time before the dam gates were closed to fill the Serpentine River plain and drown Lake Pedder.

This was history in the making. Light planes landed on the pink quartzite beach all weekend and flew back to Hobart and Launceston airports to collect more people.

Newspaper cameramen and television cameramen recorded the final days of splendour for this unique lake in the Tasmanian South West Wilderness. Everyone was aware of the momentous occasion, as the fight to save the lake had been spread, via the news, all over the world.

We flew back to Hobart knowing there was nothing more that could be done to save this gem in the wilderness. Despite his association with the Hydro Electric Commission, my father was mesmerised by the beauty of the lake and agreed that it should not be flooded.

In 1973, our growing family left Launceston for Maroochydore, Queensland, where Lindsay, now a fully licensed surveyor had obtained an excellent job. We discovered magnificent Fraser Island in 1974, joined FIDO (Fraser Island Defenders Organisation) and worked to ban sand mining and logging on the island. Lindsay created a slide presentation with music and commentary, which he showed at various places on the Sunshine Coast. Malcolm Fraser was responsible for the World Heritage listing of Fraser Island and the stopping of sand mining in 1977. This was a joy to achieve after the disappointment of losing Lake Pedder.

In 1976, the Tasmanian Wilderness Society was formed by members of the South West Action Committee and fought to stop the Franklin Dam. A young doctor, Bob Brown, who had arrived in Launceston in late 1972, joined the group and was a founding member of the Tasmanian Wilderness Society. He was a major player in the fight to stop the damming of the Franklin River. Lake Pedder had laid the groundwork for one of the best-known environmental wins in Australian history – the blocking of the Gordon-below-Franklin dam in 1983. It was under the Bob Hawke government that the Franklin Dam was halted.

Lindsay has been a member of the Tasmanian Wilderness Society for many decades and we follow the progress of their conservation achievements with great interest.

Build update to the MU/TH/UR 6000 chamber or "Mother" to the Nostromo crew - ALIEN 79 - 1:18 scale scratch build. Frame is primarily complete, with some additional structural pieces to be added, I'm ready to begin detail...panel by panel, square by tiny square. Also need some sculpting details to the portal. Talk about a test of patience.....oh well, I made this bed so I might as well sleep in it! LOL! - I'm actually going to begin work on the chair first, then a few panels...the I'm back at working on figures...I got some new ideas I will be sharing shortly as well as returning to some other, unfinished pieces that require my attention. Need to shuffle the deck every once in awhile. ‪#‎alien‬ ‪#‎nostromo‬ ‪#‎MUTHUR6000‬ ‪#‎diorama‬ ‪#‎scratchbuild‬ ‪#‎aliens‬ ‪#‎weylandyutani‬

Build update on the Narcissus Shuttle - ALIEN 79 - 1:18 scale. Worked on the remaining frame work for the wall panels. Finished both yesterday and began adding detailing....which is going to take some time. Using a mix of styrene, Epoxy and various misc items (greeblies) to build out the details. I've decided to begin building back into the shuttles main entrance first before moving into the pilot stations...for the exception of the wall panel with all the piping rolling around. I really want to do that wall! HA! So the storage compartments will be separate sections and the airlock will be a separate section..the only way I can build this will be to keep it modular. ‪#‎alien‬ ‪#‎narcissus‬ ‪#‎shuttle‬ ‪#‎diorama‬ ‪#‎stowaway‬ ‪#‎bigchap‬ ‪#‎luckystar‬ ‪#‎scratchbuilding‬ ‪#‎modelbuilding‬

Sculpt progress on the Newborn - Alien: Resurrection - 1:18 scale. Sculpt made entirely from Aves FIXIT Sculpt by Aves Studio LLC

I said "entirely" because it's the first figure I have created so far in which I haven't used a frame of any kind to sculpt upon. Total FIXIT with a little weight to it - makes it feel expensive LOL! I need to do a scale shot to show how it scales to my 3.75" figures in the series.

Working on completing the lower abdomen of the creature, which will connect via a ball socket to the upper torso...that comes later in the casting phase. Right now, all the parts will be connected via wire or wax clay. Haven't completed the back section of the lower abdomen yet.

Next step after finishing the lower abdomen will be the upper arms and the hips. I plan on tooling the arms with traditional shoulder joints with the hips being connected via ball sockets. This can all change as the sculpt progresses.

Hope you all enjoy the update. More to come! #newborn #alienresurrection #miniature #customactionfigure #alien #adi #studioadi

Sculpt update on H.R. Giger's Space Jockey - 1:18 scale, ALIEN (1979).

Sculpt using Aves FIXIT Sculpt - a two-part epoxy. Find out more about this material at Aves Clay

In my last update, I spoke of how I needed to strip away a portion of my sculpt to make more room in the back of the Space Jockey for additional detail. I think my last video update showed the area I "dremeled" away.

For this update, I have successfully sculpted the portions that were previously removed, adding more detail than before and this time bringing the sculpt further out, making room for the new detail that has also begun to take residence in the back of the sculpture. Two tubes have been added as well as a build-out between the two where the next set up tubes will go. This offset is accurate to the production photos I have studied from the set.

Next step is to sculpt the backpack behind the head, neck and shoulders. An enormous amount of biomechanical detail in this area alone so it should be fun! Just waiting on my latest FIXIT order from Aves Studio which should be here sometime this week.

Sorry for the absence of updates over the past month. Life turned the volume up a bit and I had to step away from the workbench to turn it back down. Nothing serious, which I'm thankful for. Speaking of being thankful, I hope all my American friends had a great Thanksgiving!

Thanks for all the continued interest! Hoping you all are staying safe and healthy. More updates to come! ❤

Paint progress on "The Beast" - ALIEN 79 - 1:18 scale. My first "primed" body and second "primed" head sculpt of the beast - "Snarling" version. Build progress on the Narcissus Shuttle - ALIEN 79 - 1:18 scale. Just taking a step back to look at progress since last night (minus the sleep pods)....this piece is growing!!! Now it takes up practically my entire work table when fully assembled. Once completed, it should be a hair smaller than the Nostromo's bridge...which is another piece I need to return to here shortly. For this phase in the shuttle build I lack only the entry/airlock door. Detailing will come at a later time as I really want to get onto other projects. It's almost been a year to the day when I began the Narcissus project....close to approaching a little over half the build?...JUST the build....minus detailing and painting....Oh and LIGHTING.....man.
