Since I was very young, Athenry has been a name that resonates with me. Travelling in the old steam trains to Sligo, the call “All change at Athenry” would ring out, and the name had that special appeal. I was tempted to give it the title “Low lie the fields” but that was just a bit too obvious, and as there is a Peeler in the shot, I thought a bit of crime and punishment might be more appropriate!

This is a FISA postcard showing Piccadilly Circus looking north east with Coventry Street to the right and Shaftesbury Avenue on the left. It is late May or June 1980 and there is a bit of a mystery surrounding the film playing at the London Pavilion. “The Final Countdown” was a science fiction film starring Kirk Douglas and Martin Sheen, a US Navy Aircraft Carrier is transported back to 1941 just before the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbour… The film regularly crops up on TV and in 1980 it played at the Leicester Square Theatre from late May and all of June but according to the newspaper listings it did not play at the London Pavilion. In fact, there are no listings for the London Pavilion in May or June. At the time the future of the London Pavilion was in doubt and it closed the following year in April, it was gutted, and a shopping centre and two small cinemas were built behind the façade. The front of the building has already lost its neon signs, it may just be that the hoarding is advertising the film for the Leicester Square Theatre.

The Lada / VAZ-2105, 2104 and 2107, collectively marketed as Lada Riva for right-hand drive models (in the United Kingdom, Australia and New Zealand), the Lada Nova in Germany, and by multiple other names and markets are a series of compact sedans of the Zhiguli line-up (Fiat 124-based cars), built by Russian car manufacturer AvtoVAZ (formerly VAZ). Introduced in 1979 in the Soviet Union, and progressively introduced to Western European and global markets from the early 1980s, under the Lada brand, they were sold as saloons (2105 and 2107), and station wagon (2104) versions.
The British market first received the Riva as the 1300GL in July 1983 and the 21051 (Riva 1200L) had the 1,198 cc (73.1 cu in) British sales were based heavily on low sales price and durability. In 1986, more than 20,000 Ladas were sold in Britain, almost all of them Rivas, before peaking at more than 30,000 in 1988
The car was also sold in New Zealand, where it was distributed by the New Zealand Dairy Board. The Dairy Board received the cars in lieu of cash payments for deliveries of mutton and butter to the Soviet Union. The last such trade was carried out in 1990
Lada 2105 VFTS (Lada VFTS) is a sports model which was being built at the facilities of the Vilnius factory vehicles under the guidance of the legendary Soviet rallista Stasys Brundza. Homologated to FISA Group B standard. Markets forced engine VAZ-2106, using carburettors WEBER 45 DCOE (1.6-litre (98 cu in) with an output of 160PS and a close ratio 4- and 5-speed gearbox, with claw couplings include; since 1986 in order to reduce weight, the car was equipped with doors made of aluminium. The car proved successful in rallying and is seen here the livery used in the Rally of New Zealand

In Port Dalhousie Ward along Lakeport Road, is the popular destination Rennie Park, featuring a variety of sculptures; two of the more notable are the Spirit of St. Catharines and the Heavy Eight Sculptures. The latter work has a direct relationship to the Royal Canadian Henley Regatta, whose finish line is adjacent to the park, and is still a significant event in Niagara. For over a century (since 1903), Martindale Pond has hosted the Royal Canadian Henley Regatta; this course has been rowed by Masters and elite world champions, as well as local high school, university, club programs and adult recreation leagues that are as much about enjoyment as excellence. The Heavy Eight was dedicated on July 28, 1999, in memoriam of A. Stewart Howe, who founded Lincoln Fabrics (1955) in St. Catharines. The elder Howe was a lifelong supporter of rowing and of the internationally renowned Henley Regatta. The piece is intended to visually imitate the rowing format of “an eight with its coxswain”, the eight rough-hewn granite blocks interspersed with eight taller and thinner stone structures representing oars, stand in a semi-circle with a ninth smaller block in the centre. This installation offers a contrast between the stone and the smooth cleanliness of the volunteer and donor names engraved into the many stones. The work was designed and fabricated by Barber Monuments of St. Catharines, who have been producing monuments and memorials in Niagara for decades. The Heavy Eight celebrates the history of rowing at Martindale Pond, and the generosity of numerous businesses and private citizens, especially families, in providing financial support to preserve and upgrade the course to World Championship Class A standards. During the 1990's, the rowing course was facing serious damage as the natural sediment deposits left by Twelve Mile Creek created very shallow areas. The Henley Regatta, and eventually all rowing on Martindale Pond, was in jeopardy. Using the upcoming 1999 Fisa World Rowing Championships, as a rallying point, a group of local volunteers succeeded in garnering support to restore both the Henley course and Martindale Pond’s larger ecosystem to a healthy level. The many donor names are on the granite slabs: corporations, groups, families and individuals are all represented in clean, engraved list. The efforts and focus of these volunteers serves to recognize not just the history of rowing in the Niagara community but also has helped preserve the course for future generations of oars people.

Après une longue période de panne d'ordinateur, me voilà de retour avec un PC tout neuf ! Il reste encore pas mal de boulot avant de finaliser la configuration, mais cela commence à fonctionner.

This is a FISA postcard, probably printed in Barcelona, but in any event printed in the E.E.C. The view from an elevated position on the south side of Piccadilly Circus looks north towards Shaftesbury Avenue. As usual Piccadilly Circus is in a state of flux, shops are being built on the left, a Burger King and Boots the Chemist and the advertising shroud has been removed from the London Pavilion. There are two clues which show that this is the summer of 1979, the “Wings” last album, “Back to the Egg” is advertised on the right corner. I don’t think that this was meant to be their last album, but the group split up the following year during their world tour to promote the album after Paul McCartney was arrested in Japan for possession of cannabis. The number 19 bus bottom left is carrying an advertisement for the Klaus Kinski film, “Nosferatu the Vampyre”, a remake of the 1922 German film, “Nosferatu”.

In 1979 work began on a rally-spec Opel. Both the Ascona B and the Manta B were used for this. The Ascona 400 model was the more successful of the two, largely due to better weight distribution.Opel joined forces with German tuner Irmscher and Cosworth in Britain, to make the 400. Cosworth was given the task to develop a 16-valve 2-cam head for the CIH spec engine block, and Irmscher designed the bodywork. Opel however had problems with the engine. The first idea of using a 2.0-litre engine and then using the 16-valve head from Cosworth lacked the necessary power output, but the heads were already built, the resolution was to use a 2 litre engine blockand a forged crank with a longer stroke and ended with a 2.4-litre engine block. Mounting the 16-valve head on this gave a massive output, and an engine that proved eminently tunable. Opel produced 23 cars to this specification in 1981 which were recognizable by the 2 slot front grille (1982, 83, and 84 models had 4 slot grilles). The cars were delivered as both street cars and factory tuned rally cars. The Manta 400 was produced in a total of 245 specimens following the homologation regulations by FISA (today FIA). But the i400 also spawned some other "i" models: The first was the i200 which basically was a GSi model Manta B with most of the Manta 400's appearance. 700 were made and are still considered a collector's item. The i200 used a tuned 2.0E engine delivering 125 PS (92 kW). There was also the i240, which is rarer as only 300 were produced, it is fitted with the i400 engine block but using a normal eight-valve cast-iron head from the 2.0E engine
This car is a regular competitor in Race Retro most noteably with Simon and Alistair Crook or Simon Powell and was at Donington as part of the Retro Rally demonstrations.
