After Tulsi Gabbard announced her departure as Director of National Intelligence (DNI) in May 2026, the President planned to nominate Bill Pulte, head of the Federal Housing Finance Agency, as her successor. He withdrew his nomination after strong objections from Senate Democrats and Republicans.

They were concerned about Pulte's lack of any experience in intelligence. Virginia Senator Mark Warner, the ranking Democrat on the Senate Intelligence Committee, said, "The concern is not only that Mr. Pulte lacks the 'extensive national security experience' required by statute for the job, which was created after intelligence failures led to the deaths of thousands of Americans on 9/11, it is that he appears to have been selected precisely because the White House believes he will provide the narrative it wants, not the intelligence we need." Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-SD) also objected for similar reasons. Trump defended his nomination, saying, "I wasn’t greatly experienced in national security, and I think I have done a really great job with it. A lot of people will say that."

In addition, senators were concerned about Pulti's penchant for targeting Trump's perceived enemies on the President's behalf. He has been accused of weaponizing the housing agency by accusing Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook, California Senator Adam Schiff, and New York Attorney General Letitia James of mortgage fraud.

Associated Press reported that Bill Pulte learned the art of attack by going after his own perceived enemies: his family. "He accused his grandfather’s widow of insider trading. He was allegedly the driving force behind a website trashing an aunt as a 'fake Christian.' And he publicly blasted another relative as 'a fat slob,' 'weirdo,' and 'grifter,' according to court records from a bitter legal feud pursued by Pulte that ensnared PulteGroup, the multibillion-dollar homebuilding giant his grandfather founded."

After concerns about Pulte's lack of intelligence experience and apprehensions about weaponizing the agency, Trump appointed him acting director. Democrats immediately protested the appointment of anyone without national security experience as the DNI, refusing to support a critical extension of Section 702 of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act until Trump rescinded his appointment. Section 702 allows the collection of foreign intelligence without a warrant. Without the extension, the U.S. intelligence community will be constrained in its efforts to keep the country safe from outside interference (although the database of work already done would remain accessible). Despite these concerns, the President continued to support Pulte.

Update: Trump backed down on his initial choice to head the Director of National Intelligence office, Bill Pulte. And on July 28, 2026, the Senate confirmed Jay Clayton as the new DNI.

The Postcard

A Golden Shield postally unused postcard that was published by FISA of London and Barcelona. They state that the card was printed in the E.E.C.

The reference to the E.E.C.means that the card was published prior to 1993. The European Economic Community (EEC) was a regional organisation that aimed to bring about economic integration among its member states. It was created by the Treaty of Rome of 1957.

Upon the formation of the European Union (EU) in 1993, the EEC was incorporated and renamed the European Community (EC).

In 2009, the EC's institutions were absorbed into the EU's wider framework, and the community ceased to exist.

Blackpool Tower

Blackpool Tower is a tourist attraction in Blackpool, Lancashire, which was opened to the public on the 14th. May 1894. When completed Blackpool Tower was the tallest man- made structure in the British Empire.

Inspired by the Eiffel Tower in Paris, it is 518 feet (158 metres) tall and is the 120th.-tallest freestanding tower in the world. Blackpool Tower is also the common name for the Tower Buildings, an entertainment complex in a red-brick three-storey block that comprises the tower, Tower Circus, the Tower Ballroom, and roof gardens, which was designated a Grade I listed building in 1973. The tower celebrated its 126th anniversary in May 2020.

When the Tower opened, 3,000 customers took the first rides to the top. People paid sixpence for admission, sixpence more for a ride in the lifts to the top, and a further sixpence for the circus.

The top of the Tower caught fire in 1897, and the platform was seen on fire from up to 50 miles (80 km) away.

The Tower was not painted properly during its first thirty years and became corroded, leading to discussions about demolishing it. However, it was decided to rebuild it instead, and all the steelwork in the structure was replaced and renewed between 1920 and 1924.

On the 22nd. December 1894, Norwegian ship Abana was sailing from Liverpool to Savannah, Georgia, but was caught up in a storm, and mistook the recently built Blackpool Tower for a lighthouse. Abana was first seen off North Pier, and later drifted to Little Bispham where she was wrecked, and can still be seen at low tide. The ship's bell still hangs in St Andrew's Church in Cleveleys.

In 1940, during the Second World War, the crow's nest was removed to allow the structure to be used as a Royal Air Force radar station known as 'RAF Tower', which proved unsuccessful.

A post box was opened at the top of the tower in 1949.

The hydraulic lifts to the top of the tower were replaced in 1956–57, and the winding-gear was converted to use an electric motor.

The top of the tower was painted silver in 1977 as part of Queen Elizabeth's Silver Jubilee celebrations. A giant model of King Kong was placed on the side of the tower in 1984. In 1985, escapologist Karl Bartoni and his bride were married suspended in a cage from the tower.

The lifts and winding gear were again replaced in 1992. The same year the tower complex was renamed Tower World, and was opened by Diana, Princess of Wales. The tower is usually painted in dark red, except for its centenary year in 1994 when it was painted gold by abseiling painters.

In 1998, a 'Walk of Faith' glass floor panel was opened at the top of the tower. Made up of two sheets of laminated glass, it weighs half a tonne and is two inches thick.

In October 2007, a laser beam installed on the Tower for the duration of the annual Illuminations was criticised by astronomer Sir Patrick Moore, presenter of television programme 'The Sky at Night', who said:

"Light pollution is a huge problem.

I am not saying we should turn all

the lights out, that is not practical,

but there are some things which

are very unnecessary. The Blackpool

Tower light is certainly something I

do not think we should be doing.

I very much oppose it.'

The beam could be seen 30 miles (48 km) away; Moore called for it to be stopped. The Centre for Astrophysics at the University of Central Lancashire in Preston said that the laser added to a spiralling problem affecting astronomy.

The tower has transmitters for local FM station Radio Wave 96.5 and some non-broadcast services.

Painting the Tower structure takes seven years to complete,[ and the workers who maintain the structure are known as 'Stick Men'. There are 563 steps from the roof of the Tower building to the top of the Tower, which the maintenance teams use for the structure's upkeep.

If the wind speed exceeds 45 mph (72 km/h), the top of the Tower is closed as a safety precaution. If the wind reaches 70 miles per hour (110 km/h) the tower top sways by an inch.

5 miles (8 km) of cables are used to feed the 10,000 light bulbs which are used to illuminate the Tower.

In April 2002, the Tower maintenance team was featured in the BBC One programme 'Britain’s Toughest Jobs'.

“The expiration this year of several provisions of the 2001 USA PATRIOT Act…has prompted fresh debate in Congress over the appropriate balance of counterterrorism authorities for U.S. law enforcement agencies and the need to preserve American civil liberties and privacy,” said Rudy deLeon, Senior Vice President for National Security and International Policy at a Center for American Progress Action Fund event last Tuesday.

In light of the PATRIOT Act debate the Action Fund hosted a discussion with Representative Jane Harman (D-CA) and Ken Gude, Associate Director of CAP Action’s International Rights and Responsibility program, about how the government could ensure national security without compromising civil liberties.

Controversial items in the PATRIOT Act up for debate this year include the ease of access to business records, roving wire tapping provisions applicable to today’s digital technology, and surveillance of individual or “lone wolf” suspects who are unconnected to any terrorist organization. The panelists discussed the effectiveness of these provisions and whether they violated an individual’s right to privacy.

Rep. Harman has served as a member of the House Intelligence Committee for eight years and is currently chair of the Homeland Security Subcommittee on Intelligence and Terrorism Risk Assessment. She explained that a strong national security system could not come at the expense of civil liberties. “Security and liberty are reinforcing values…it’s not more of one and less at the other—it’s more of both or less of both.”

Rep. Harman lauded the Obama administration for its national security policies, but she said further steps are necessary. She praised President Barack Obama’s commitment to closing Guantanamo Bay detention camp, too, and his limiting the overclassification of material by the Homeland Security department. But she called for more debates over State Secrets Privilege—a legal precedent under which a court is asked to omit evidence based on government affidavit stating that court proceedings might release information that could jeopardize national security.

Harman commended the current House version of PATRIOT Act revisions because it would prohibit a person’s reading habits from being used as evidence of terrorist activity or intent.The bill would also change the target of a roving wiretap to a single individual rather than a single phone. Rep. Harman pointed out that the current rules are incongruent with new technology that allows a person to use disposable cell phones. New technology has made the need for a court order on every tapped phone inefficient.

Gude supported the expiration of the Lone Wolf Provision, which allows Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act investigations of lone terrorists that are not connected to a specific organization. He explained that FISA was created to monitor people connected to foreign powers or terrorist groups and therefore the threshold for obtaining a surveillance warrant was lower. He and Rep. Harman agreed that the Lone Wolf Provision leaves individuals vulnerable to a violation of privacy by the government.

Gude explained that his objection to the Lone Wolf Provision isn’t that the government should be prohibited from conducting surveillance on individuals. However, he thought traditional criminal wiretaps were more appropriate when no evidence links the person to a foreign terrorist group.

Harman said that now “we have the opportunity to debate new rules in a new environment” since after 9/11, legislators did not take time to “get [counterterrorism] laws right.” She spoke about to the “authorization to use military force” on groups connected to 9/11 that “gave the president the right to act unilaterally.” She called for a new balance of power between branches of government regarding national security issues, and said that the laws after 9/11 gave the president too much power to make counterterrorism decisions without congressional or public debate.

In the spirit of checks and balances, Gude said there was hope for bipartisan consensus on counterterrorism reforms. “On an issue like this there is probably more room for bipartisan commitment than on almost any other issue on the Hill right now,” he said. Gude and Rep. Harman recognized a need for robust debate and strong cooperation on national security reform. Rep. Harman noted that “the terrorists are not going to check our party registration before they blow us up, so we really better be in this together.”

Sanatori de Puig d'Olena, Sant Quirze Safaja (el Moianès, Catalunya) by El senyor dels Bertins

El sanatori antituberculós de Puig d'Olena va ser construït per l'arquitecte Antoni Fisas i inaugurat l'any 1933. L'arquitecte fou assessorat per Maria Planas i Cabot, qui va encarregar la seva construcció, i pel Dr. Francesc Ribas Soberanos. Maria Planes havia estat en alguns sanatoris de Suïssa dedicats a la tuberculosi, malaltia que patia el seu pare, coneixements que va utilitzar per la construcció d'aquest edifici. El sanatori va començar a construir l'any 1930 i inicialment la documentació parlar del sanatori de la Rovireta tot i que l'any 1933 se li posar oficialment el nom de sanatori de Puig d'Olena.

Aquest sanatori es va convertir en la institució més avançada del país, tant a nivell arquitectònic, tecnològic i professional. Dins el personal d'atenció als malalts hi havia una comunitat de les Dominiques de l'Anunciata. L'any 1954 el sanatori va tancar per manca de malalts però el setembre del mateix any va obrir novament per acollir infants amb sota la responsabilitat de l'Associació de la Mare de Déu de Fàtima, experiència que va durar poc temps. Entre els anys 1955 i 1988 i sota la direcció de les Dominiques de l'Anunciata passa a ser preventori i centre residencial d'infants. A partir del 1989 va convertir-se en un centre col·laborador de la Direcció General d'Atenció a la Infància i a l'Adolescència (DGAIA) de la Generalitat de Catalunya. A partir de 1996 passà a ésser Centre Residencial d'Acció Educativa de Menors (CRAE) amb la particularitat que els acollits, per una millor integració, es distribueixen en escoles dels nuclis de població més propers.

L'edifici és una construcció de planta rectangular que consta de planta baixa i tres pisos amb la coberta a quatre vessants a diferents nivells. A la façana principal, orientada a tramuntana, s'hi obre la porta d'accés d'arc de mig punt i un seguit de finestrals d'arc pla. La façana posterior, orientada a migjorn, té una composició simètrica formada per un cos més alt amb balconades d'arc pla alternada amb un cos adossat més baix format per una galeria d'arc de mig punt a la planta baixa, una galeria d'arc pla a la primera planta i per finestrals d'arc pla a la segona planta. Totes aquestes galeries eren espais per afavorir les sortides exteriors dels malats des de les antigues habitacions. A la part central de l'edifici, en sobresurt una construcció de planta octogonal que forma part del tercer pis. Aquest cos correspon a l'antiga capella del Roser on destaca la coberta interior realitzada amb fusta. L'exterior de la coberta és de teula àrab a diferents aigües i coronada amb una creu. A les parets s'hi obren un seguit de finestres en forma d'òcul emmarcades amb maons. Actualment, aquest espai es utilitzat com a sala d'actes tot i conservar els elements de la capella. D'aquest edifici en destaca l'habitació que va ocupar el poeta Màrius Torres, situada a la porta núm.10 de la primera planta. L'interior s'ha recreat tenint en compte imatges antigues de tal com eren les habitacions amb mobiliari, estris de la vida quotidiana i en aquest cas documents i escrits relacionats amb el poeta i la seva vida. A la planta baixa també en destaca la sala de reunions on hi ha una petita exposició amb elements originals del sanatori i la història del sanatori.
