On Sunday afternoon and evening the FEC usually runs three southbound trains out of Bowden Yard in Jacksonville. #101 is first up and we elected to catch it at St Augustine. The new Champion paint scheme and a palm tree scream Florida to a pair of Yankees who have escaped from the frozen north for a short while.
Early morning sun glints off the nose of FEC 505 as it leads one of the final I&O rack trains south of Hamler, OH.
Going Places
Florida East Coast train #103 is approaching Tico, where they will make a set out before continuing on to Fort Pierce.
On that day, FEC was using #411 (GP40-2) and #510 (GP38-2) to get the job done. They both have a nice sized Going Places logo, more commonly to railfans, the "Hurricane" logo. I, like many others hopes this logo stays in place on a lot of locomotives and other things system wide but Grupo Mexico has other ideas. It's unfortunate they came in and wrecked a really cool railroad.

Nice Surprise
A bonus train that I didn't know about until, ETH made mention of it. I was sitting in St Augustine and noticed a southbound lined out of Bowden Yard down to Saybrook. I knew it was too early for train 101 to be on the move and that it was a Saturday, meaning no local switching jobs were working.
Eric and his son had to run some errands in St Augustine, but could sneak a little railfanning in before going home. He mentioned that FEC was running a train for it's employees and their families. The train would make numerous trips from Magnolia siding down to Saybrook siding for the greater part of that Saturday.
Before this was taken, I learned what Florida humidity can do to a camera lens in quick fashion. Not too long before this was taken, a chase of Champion SD40-2s leading train 228 in the pouring rain. Florida is kinda funny in the sense that it can be pouring one minute and then dry the next. It didn't take long for my lens to fog up at a key moment when this was the only time we got sun on the many southbound trips.
With a Geep on each end, the Family Days train passes by the intermediate signal at 36.2 and will round the curve en route to Saybrook siding and then will head back north to drop off the passengers at the St. Augustine depot.

Soaking Wet
I woke up early one Saturday morning while on vacation and made it a plan to go out and shoot some northbounds on the FEC, before meeting up with ETH.
I checked ATCS and noticed someone was working in the New Smyrna Beach yard. Given the time of the morning, odds were it was train 230. Train 230 usually uses older EMD power most of the time, but there were a few times I was down there, it used the Gevos with the LNG tender.
Arriving at the New Smyrna Beach yard, I noticed the train in question had a pair of Champion SD40-2's. Before leaving town, I checked radar to see if any rain was in the area. Sure enough, north of Daytona Beach, rain was indeed on the radar but it was really scattered.
Arriving into Daytona, the northbound train was lined out of New Smyrna Beach and up to Magnolia. I continued on my way to St Augustine and praying that I wasn't going to get dumped on.
I sent a heads up in the FEC Facebook group about the dash 2's, I learned that the 230 only runs Monday through Friday and this train was FEC train 228.
Shortly after 0730, I shot the pair at Magnolia in some light rain and decided to give chase, because I saw sun just behind the rain. The further north I went, the darker it got. I drove a few more miles north of St Augustine, and found a grade crossing and said one more no matter what. It was raining pretty good at this point. A few minutes later, the crossing gates and lights activated and then came the downpour. For a split second, I thought to myself, that I was crazy and just to call it quits. I had another week to find more dash 2's on the FEC.
Going against my judgement, I stayed out in the pouring rain and trusted the camera to do its thing. By the time the train approached the crossing, I was beyond soaked, but somehow still managed to get the shot.
A pair of Champion SD40-2's lead train 228 north of St Augustine in the pouring rain. Normally, I would refrain from getting out of the car, but I really really love this power and that paint scheme. I really love this shot. I didn't think I could like something that wasn't perfectly lit, but anything can happen. I can't wait to get back to the FEC.
After this train had passed, I started the drive back into downtown St. Augustine. A few miles down the road the rain completely stopped and full sun was in abundance. Me, I was soaked from head to toe, but no complaints on my end.

Wear & Tear
Florida East Coast train #915 is almost to Cocoa Yard and will set their loads out and then bring back the empties.
The 432 has been through a lot, as you can see, but I hope FEC doesn't paint this into their corporate colotrs.

FEC's running a solid EMD consist on FEC 210 the day I was going to do a walk through on my new house so I was able to easily catch this one. Now I live on FEC so it will be much easier to catch them.
FEC 811, 822, 805 and 813 with a pair of fuel tenders lead another short and late 222 north at a slow pace through Hollywood FL bound for Bowden yard in Jacksonville. I had waited south of town for about 2 hours. With sun setting and a hungry fiancé I headed back towards the hotel with a quick stop for food. With food in the car and all that darn traffic it ended up working out as I neared the tracks the headlights of 222 were finally in sight so another quick detour I was able to nab 222 and make it back to the hotel in time to give her the still warm food she ordered.

Happy Mother's Day to every Mom out there!
My mother means the world to me, like many of your mothers mean the same to you. My mother has always been there for me my whole life and she is still there when I need her. Words can't express how much I love my Mom.
While on vacation in Florida, I woke up one morning and checked ATCS. I saw a northbound lined out of the yard at New Smyrna Beach to Spruce Creek. Figuring it would be the 230, I decided to check it out. I noticed the Pink Lady leading train 230, but was still working in the yard. I was getting short on time, as I had to meet my parents for breakfast at a local cafe at 0900.
10 minutes later, they were lined to Saybrook. A few minutes later they were pulling and continuing their journey to Bowden Yard in Jacksonville. My mother is a breast cancer survivor, so shooting this locomotive brought some tears, but also some memories of her battle with the deadly disease. I am so thankful her care team caught this early enough where she was able to beat it. Not many women are so lucky. Chasing wasn't an option this day, because of other family plans, but no regrets on my end.
This shot is for you Mom! Thanks for everything you have given me and will give me in life, I love you so much!!
