Purple Finches have large, seed-cracking beaks, and they seem to like black oil sunflower seeds best. A seed preference study determined that they choose thinner sunflower seeds over wider ones. Coniferous trees in your backyard may encourage Purple Finches to visit.
An Adenanthos cygnorum plant was a wonderful place to rest and sun.

'GREY BIRD, GREY DAY.'
If it looks as though this beautiful female Black Redstart was photographed in foggy conditions, she was!
She was favouring the lighthouse garden at Flamborough Head, accompanied by another female plus one male. They were newly arrived migrant birds and moved on after a couple of days.
Back in the mid 90's, the New England Central RR along with the Mass Central would operate a Santa Train on the first Saturday of December. Local businesses from the Palmer area would donate goodies and hot chocolate for the kids. The 1996 train operated with MCER former Alaska F 1508, and a NECR GP-38 on the north end. This has to be the closest I've been able to get to a Kingfisher. Kingfishers are notorious birds for be very skittish. I was well concealed, but I think she sensed something was going on and looked nervous.
Far, far away this train can be seen in the Salzach valley on one of our walks. I had seen this photo point from further down in the valley but couldn't find the point it was taken from, it didn't come from some photo site, it was in a touristic brochure overlooking Pfarrwerfen .. probably taken with a drone.
In the end I thought this was good too, a DB 101 with the white IC cars fitted well in the viewfinder with a mighty mountain range in the background.

Goosander / mergus merganser. Straws Bridge, Derbyshire. 02/12/2022.
A braver Goosander who frequented my local lake in early December, 2022. Here she had just popped up close to the bank after hunting for food underwater. She was one of seven birds present for a few days. The majority of these wary birds stayed in the centre of the lake, well away from passers-by.

Going big on this F-unit Friday. Santa Fe's hundreds of red and silver F's are the face of American railroading, and the tradition continued in the second generation with the purchase of nine massive FP45 units from EMD. These 20-cylinder, 3600 hp, six motor, steam generator equipped cowl units were the epitome of streamlined aesthetic, melding the earlier era of industrial design with the more utilitarian look of the modern era. Only 14 units were built, with the others going to the Milwaukee Road. Here is the preserved ATSF 95, seen in July 2008 on display at Barstow CA.
Interesting to note that the FP45s were constructed only three years after E-unit production ended.
