Extinction Rebellion in Trafalgar Square 3 posts.

Labelled "crusties" by Boris Johnson, the folks taking part are an eclectic mix of young and old. The ones seen here were peaceful enough, but it appears rent-a-mob have become involved elsewhere in London, their activities unfortunately tarring everyone with the same brush. Isn't that always the way? Whether anyone in Westminster is taking notice is doubtful, with most politicians bogged down with Brexit or their own self interests...

Genuine concerns are being championed by the young. It is to their credit that they care. We visited from Hertfordshire via public transport and that’s a start from us.

Extinction Rebellion NYC. World wide protests on Climate Change. This one in New York.

Activists from Extinction Rebellion block traffic at Oxford Circus, in the heart of London's shopping district, and stage a fashion show "intended to disrupt the language and symbols of the fashion industry." With pink carpets laid for a catwalk, and music playing, models showed off garments made from recylable materials in a protest highlighting the wasteful and disposable nature of the fashion industry and its significant contribution to the carbon dioxide emmissions which cause global warming.

Extinction Rebellion stage 2 weeks of protests in London (and cities around the world) to force the government to tell the truth about the threats from climate change and biodiversity loss and declare an emergency, to commit to acting on it and to call a citizens assembly to assess how best to respond. Throughout, the protests were peaceful and good natured, with non-violent direct action a core tactic of Extinction Rebellion. Nonetheless by 19/10/19 the police reported that 1,700+ people had been arrested, many for obstructing the highway (eg lock-ons while lying in the road). As XR publicly say, their strategy aims at maximizing arrests to gain publicity and raise the isse of climate change in the media and public consciousness. Policing was much heavier compared to the April "rebellion", with pre-emptive arrests and raids on storage facilities. On 14/10/19 police expanded an order banning XR protests to include the whole of London. This ban has been widely criticised and may be subject to judicial review.

outside the Grand Hotel Brighton June 2019. At least they did not threaten to drone the place unlike Heathrow. History reminds us when causes turn to terrorising us all they tend to loose support. Negotiations and peaceful protests are what most folk want and are willing to tolerate in democratic societies
