Street and reportage photography from Glasgow, Scotland.
Taken in in July 2019 when an Extinction Rebellion protest closed roads in a few major cities including here, at Tollbooth Steeple in Glasgow. Irrespective of your opinions of the actions of the Extinction Rebellion group, their motives should be a rallying cry for us all. We are living through a mass extinction era that is almost entirely man-made and we still have the power to stop the worst of it from coming to pass - if we act now! *
We share one world, one tiny planet in the vastness of space, where each ecosystem is delicately balanced with the next. The more we screw up the greater the knock-on effects will be. Every day is Earth Day.

* I am not a member of Extinction Rebellion and I do not condone unlawful protest, I am just a photographer documenting life in the city. I do, however, see and understand the irrefutable science behind our climate emergency.

Friday afternoon in St. Peter’s Square Manchester.
For the past couple of months the school children and students of Manchester and the surrounding area have been going on strike on Fridays and turning up in St. Peter’s Square; not sure if it is every Friday. The reason for this action is to demonstrate against Climate Change; their argument is that the planet (their future) is being destroyed by the actions of big corporations; and something needs to be done today, not tomorrow.
The point of the students lying on the ground is to represent they have no future, the planet is dead. The boxes represent the planet virtually covered in water caused by rising sea levels as the planet warms up due to climate change.
It’s time someone started to take notice of these youngsters; after all, the planet is their future. I personally admire and respect what they are doing but will anyone listen; I hope so. They need a future to look forward to and so do my grandchildren.
News presenters reporting on the demonstration so far. Apart from blocking Deansgate I don't think they had a great deal to talk about as, in my opinion, the turnout was very poor; the vast majority of people seen here were purely spectators as was I.....!
Friday afternoon in St. Peter’s Square Manchester.
Many students, from Manchester and the surrounding districts, are seen here demonstrating on the streets of Manchester; the reason, the future of our planet. The youth of today are the future of the planet and their concerns are real. The planet, their planet, is gradually dying or should I say being murdered to a point of near extinction. Everything from CO2 emissions, Climate change, Deforestation, Rising in sea temperature to the killing of Animals and more; all of these things effect the environment we live in. These youngsters have a right to clean and healthy environment, a one that will be safe for future generations to come; we had our chance and blew it, give them the chance they deserve.
Incidentally, the vast majority of the protesters were female, where were the boys? No doubt they were at home playing on their X Boxes etc. Come on boys do your bit and help the girls out, it is your future also….!
These police officers are there directing the demonstrators to a safe route through St. Peters Square keeping them safe. St. Peter’s Square is a major hub for the Metrolink tram service and is therefore extremely busy at all times.
During the Extinction Rebellion occupation of Oxford Circus I was told that people who live there were able to hear birdsong for the first time in 30 years.
