A huge fire is ripping through Eastbourne Pier.
The roof of the pier, built in the East Sussex seaside town in the 1870s, has been completely destroyed.
The pier was evacuated. No-one was injured in the fire and police said it was not thought to be suspicious.
David Tutt, leader of Eastbourne Borough Council, said he was hopeful the pier could be repaired and that he understood the fire had been started by an electrical fault.
"The emergency services have done a fantastic job," he said.
"The fact that as far as we're aware that nobody's hurt - we're not aware of anybody unaccounted for - they evacuated the site very quickly and they've managed to contain it to that front dome so there's hope of getting the pier restored.
"The building which has been affected is the largest dome on the pier, and it has been badly damaged - but further down it looks as it's always looked.
"My understanding... [is] it looks as if there was a problem with electrics in the wall of the dome between the two layers of the wall there and that seems to be where it started."
The blaze broke out behind some wood panelling in the arcade building and billowing smoke is filling the air.
Sian Ellis, a hotel manager in the town, said it was an "absolute red, molten, mess of flame and smoke".
"We've just had another explosion there and it's very, very frightening and hugely saddening for the whole of the town," she said.
About 80 firefighters are tackling the blaze in the privately-owned pier and are expected to remain on the scene for several hours, East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service said.
A fire service spokesman said: "Firefighters are using lifeboats to help tackle the fire from the sea and an aerial platform is being used as a water tower to prevent the fire from spreading on the shore side."
He said crews had gone onto the pier from the sea-ward end to try and stop the fire spreading further along the structure and the blaze was being "brought under control".

Mark Sawyer, coxswain of Eastbourne Lifeboat, said: "The main structure is gone now and it's a metal shell.
"The fire has spread to the middle section and it's burning frantically.
"There was a large cheer from the crowd when the hoses arrived, but it's now looking ominous."

Councillor Philip Ede, from Eastbourne Borough Council, who is witnessing the fire, said: "It looks pretty drastic from where I'm standing.
"There's a lot of smoke and flames engulfing the first section of the pier.
"We pray the fire brigade can save as much of the building as possible."

Des Pritchard, East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service's chief fire officer, said: "Our firefighters have saved a huge amount of the pier - there's a great deal that's still there.
"It is very sad but pier fires are very difficult to fight and many result in the complete loss of the pier."
A police spokeswoman added: "It has been confirmed that the pier was safely and quickly evacuated and there was no-one trapped by the fire when it broke out.
"The fire is not believed to be suspicious at this time."

BBC Radio Kent's Phil Harrison says a section of Eastbourne Pier "looks like a skeleton"
Ant Miller, who was on the beach when the fire broke out, said it quickly spread throughout the building
"There's quite a warm breeze here in Eastbourne today so it took pretty quickly," he said.
"Within 20 minutes or so, lots of flames, lots of smoke. When we sort of noticed it, it looked like the pier was evacuated pretty much immediately."
Eastbourne MP Stephen Lloyd said it looked like the pier had been saved from being completely destroyed.
"The good news is that we don't have a Brighton or Hastings scenario where the whole pier is destroyed," he said.
Airbourne, one of Eastbourne's biggest events, is due to take place on the seafront between 14 and 17 August.
The pier was built in the 1870s and, according to the Piers Society, previously had a theatre and a "camera obscura" built on it.
Today, a number of cafes, bars and a nightclub are situated along the pier.
It has featured in films and television programmes including the Michael Caine film Last Orders and Brit flick Angus, Thongs and Perfect Snogging.
Hastings Pier was almost entirely destroyed by fire in 2010 and West Pier in Brighton burned down in 2003.

As someone raised on the sunshine coast, seeing the pier in flames has left me feeling deeply sad and unsettled.
The symbol of the town, its Victorian structure was the constant backdrop to my childhood of chilly dips in the sea.
It even played a part in the social structure of teenage years - with the beaches either side reserved for the coolest kids.
Later it was where we would drink local cider and snog boys, in the years before nights out involved tottering up to the nightclub at the end.
Within an hour of the news my Facebook feed was filled with local friends expressing sadness and shock that a key part part of the town's history could be so easily destroyed.
I just hope that it can be restored and not suffer the fate of the structures in neighbouring towns.

中銀大廈樓高70層，樓高315米，加頂上兩桿的高度共有367.4米。其因此為1989年至1992年間香港及全亞洲最高的建築物，亦是美國地區以外最高的摩天大廈，紀錄維持了2年才被灣仔區的中環廣場所取代。中銀大廈外型為稜柱狀，就像「節節高升」的竹筍一樣。根據中銀香港網站內的介紹大廈設計是仿照竹樹不斷向上生長，象徵著力量、生機、茁壯和銳意進取的精神；基座的麻石外牆代表長城，則代表中國。結構上，整座建築物的拐角由四根加強混凝土柱支撐，有三角形框架將建築的壓力轉移到四個柱子上。外面用玻璃幕覆蓋。其獨特外型設計因此讓它成為香港最矚目地標之一，不少香港發行郵票、明信片亦常以中銀大廈為觀景之一發行。中銀大廈同時為幻彩詠香江的參與匯演建築物之一。
The Bank of China Tower (abbreviated BOC Tower) is one of the most recognisable skyscrapers in Central, Hong Kong. It houses the headquarters for the Bank of China (Hong Kong) Limited. The building is located at 1 Garden Road, in Central and Western District on Hong Kong Island.[3]
Designed by I. M. Pei, the building is 305 m (1,000.7 ft) high with two masts reaching 367.4 m (1,205.4 ft) high. It was the tallest building in Hong Kong and Asia from 1989 to 1992, and it was the first building outside the United States to break the 305 m (1,000 ft) mark. It is now the third tallest skyscraper in Hong Kong, after Two International Finance Centre and Central Plaza.[citation needed]
The 6,700m² site on which the building is constructed was formerly the location of Murray House. After its brick-by-brick relocation to Stanley, the site was sold by the Government for "only HK$1 billion" in August 1982 amidst growing concern over the future of Hong Kong in the run-up to the transfer of sovereignty.
Once developed, gross floor area was expected to be 100,000 m².[4] The original project was intended for completion on the auspicious date of 8 August 1988. However, owing to project delays, groundbreaking took place in March 1985, almost two years late. It was topped out in 1989, and occupied in May 1990.
The building was initially built by the Hong Kong Branch of the Bank of China; its Garden Road entrance continues to display the name "Bank of China", rather than BOCHK. The top four and the bottom 19 stories are used by the Bank, while the other floors are leased out. Ownership has since been transferred to BOCHK, although the Bank of China has leased back several floors for use by its own operations in Hong Kong.
The Government had apparently given preferential treatment to Chinese companies, and was again criticised for the apparent preferential treatment to the BOCHK.[4]
The price paid was half the amount of the 6,250 m² Admiralty II plot, for which the MTR Corporation paid HK$1.82 billion in cash. The BOC would make initial payment of $60 million, with the rest payable over 13 years at 6% interest. The announcement of the sale was also poorly handled, and a dive in business confidence ensued. The Hang Seng Index fell 80 points, and the HK$ lost 1.5% of its value the next day.

A Roman relief of Minerva, the Roman identification of the Celtic goddess Sulis who was connected with the spring. Minerva in her turn here shares a few of the attributes connected with Athena, the Greek goddess she was identified with (note the Gorgon head on her chest). This relief was found during excavations of the Great Bath in 1882.
The waters at Bath were very popular already in Roman times, and they in their turn took after the Celts who had built a shrine dedicated to the goddess Sulis. The Romans built both temples and baths and called the town Aquae Sulis (the water of Sulis).
According to the Anglo-Saxon chronicle the baths were destroyed in the 6th century. But not totally - the spring continued to draw attention to its healing powers, and it is now housed in a 18th century building, one of the central features of Bath. And extensive archaeological research to the Roman remains has also been made.
