The Roque de los Muchachos Observatory is is located at about 2'300m MSL on the island of La Palma in the Canary Islands. The observatory site is operated by the Instituto de Astrofísica de Canarias, based on nearby Tenerife and is part of the European North Observatory.

I captured some of of the main instruments of the site under the Milky Way core during my visit of La Palma.

From left to right, the image shows:

- One of the two MAGIC telescopes (Major Atmospheric Gamma Imaging Cherenkov Telescopes). MAGIC detects particle showers released by gamma rays, using the Cherenkov radiation, i.e. faint light radiated by the charged particles in the showers. The MAGIC telescope has a diameter of 17 meters for the reflecting surface.

- The Gran Telescopio Canarias (GranTeCan or GTC), a 10.4 m (410 in) Ritchey-Chrétien reflecting telescope. It is the world's largest single-aperture optical telescope and is used for near-infrared imaging.

- The Large Size Telescope (LST) is a 23 meter reflecting telescope to be featured in the future Northern Site of the Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA). The prototype of the LST, called LST-1, finished construction and was inaugurated on October 10th, 2018. LST-1 is currently in the commissioning phase. Three more LSTs are planned to be built, finishing construction in mid 2024.

A quick meeting outside Toronto's Queen Street subway station resulted in this street portrait of Pops. Some skepticism resulted from my introducing myself and my request to photograph him. I think my sharing my name did something to tip the balance. He consented and I took just this one photo. He seemed satisfied when I showed him the result, but his initial skepticism still shows in the portrait.

Bow Lake is one of the lakes that line the Icefields Parkway in Banff National Park and Jasper National Park, fed by melt-water from the Bow Glacier, the lake lies at the base of Bow Summit, which is perfectly reflected in its aquamarine waters on a calm day. One of my favorite lakes at Rocky Mountains, visited at least seven times in the last fall trip. Arrived at bow lake very early, experienced the most weather changes in that morning; amazed by the magnificent peaks and reflections on the lake with the fall colors in the foreground. The view is stunning. Few people around, spending some time walking around the lake, the sceneries of Canadian Rockies are out of this world.

Happy Easter my dear Flickr friends!

The kestrel (Falco tinnunculus) is a fascinating bird of prey that is commonly found in Central Europe. It is known for its characteristic shaking flight, during which it hovers in the air to look for prey1. In 2007, the kestrel was named bird of the year in Germany and in 2008 in Switzerland1.

The appearance of the kestrel shows a pronounced sexual dimorphism. Males have a grey head and reddish-brown back with small black spots, while females are uniformly reddish-brown in colour. They are adaptable birds that also breed in cities and other human settlements, often in tall buildings or towers.

Perhaps, the fact that this is during Easter sunrise service on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial, the image conveys in a more chaste manner what other couples might do on Spring Break.
