A march against the exploitation of and racism toward international students in Australia that the governments (both state and federal) continue to allow to exist. International and Australian students from NSW universities (such as Newcastle, UTS, Macquarie, UNSW and Sydney University) rallied together, marching from Sydney University to UTS and on to NSW Parliament House, asking for the government to intervene and change legislation that allows international students to be taken advantage of.

Some basic rights like abolishing the 20-hour work week limit and providing student travel concessions to international students were demanded in chants and songs. At a deeper level though, the protesters are demanding an end to the systematic racism and exploitation of international students, who are increasingly treated more as a means to profit than as students to educate.

July 20, 2016--New York City-- Governor Andrew M. Cuomo announced that the Task Force to Combat Worker Exploitation has directed 1,547 businesses to pay nearly $4 million in back wages and damages to more than 7,500 workers since its inception in July 2015. The Governor also announced several initiatives to improve worker health and safety, including a multi-agency investigation into the exploitation of dry cleaning workers and a coordinated effort to ban harmful chemicals, such as perchlorethylene (PERC), that are commonly used in the industry. Additionally, the state will launch a new $5 million grant program and RFP for non-profit organizations to expand services to help exploited workers. (Don Pollard/Office of the Governor)

In 1862, a trading port was opened in Danshuei. In the meantime, the resources in the mountain area near Dasi were rapidly exploited and tea and camphor became the main exporting products. Furthermore, city streets including Sin Street, Caodianwei Street and Houwei Street were developed at the same time. In 1886, Mingchuan Liu established an administration office to undertake full responsibility for development which boosted the prosperity of Dasi street region and gave birth to Sinnan Street (now Jhongshan Road).

The early years of the colonial rule of Taiwan were the prime time of Dasi. In those years, the resources near the mountain region continued to be exploited and the life in the stores and wine houses on the streets of Dasi was hurly-burly. A city restructuring plan to expand roads and add arcades was announced in 1912 and therefore splendidly decorated archways mushroomed one by one.

As the excavation of Taoyuan Ditch in 1928 had quite an impact on the river transport of Dahan Stream, Dasi lost its position as an industry center and ceased to develop. Accordingly, to date Dasi old streets have been able to remain as they were in the old days.

The National Center for Missing & Exploited Children’s (NCMEC) Hope Gala held on Oct. 20, 2022 at the District Pier at The Wharf, Washington, D.C. The event is a celebration of the inspiring work being done globally to protect children. We recognized leaders in child safety, honor survivors, and remember the families and victims who are still seeking justice and safety. Claire Edkins/NCMEC

HMS Exploit is an Archer-class (or P2000) patrol and training vessel of the British Royal Navy, built in Woolston by, Vosper Thornycroft and commissioned in 1988. She was originally ordered for the now defunct Royal Naval Auxiliary Service (RNXS) and had a distinctive black hull like other RNXS vessels. She is currently is attached to Birmingham University Royal Naval Unit (URNU), that exists to provide training to undergraduate students in a wide range of naval skills and to provide opportunities for personal development.

The ship's company consists of a permanent staff of the commanding officer, two senior rates and two junior rates, but can take up to twelve students with training officers usually embarked when conducting navigational training. Whilst at sea, students are able to put into practice navigation and seamanship skills they have learnt in the classroom during weekly training nights. These include chart planning, acting as Officer of the Watch, using the ship's radar and carrying out seamanship evolutions from anchoring to securing alongside. Instruction is given in engineering, firefighting, damage control and ship handling. 'Sea weekend' training is usually limited to visiting UK coastal ports but recent Easter and Summer deployments have included visits to France, Holland, Belgium, and the Channel Islands. The ship is based in Penarth Marina, Cardiff. She as lately been to Loch Ness

Lighthouse Tower

Exploits Island, Newfoundland, Canada

This lighthouse tower was used for many years to guide ships sailing into Newfoundland on the Atlantic Ocean. Sadly, like so many other lighthouses today, it has been replaced with an automatic light system and thus the Tower is slowly deteriorating due to lack of care - the lighthouse is now unmanned.
