This takes a bit of explaining. At the group We’re Here! we select a photographic challenge every day based on a new Flickr group we take turns picking. One of the most loved of our members is the funny, kind, clever, creative, and very talented Ruth Raymond, aka ruthlesscrab. Today’s challenge is to copycat ruthlesscrab and the group we are visiting is Ruthless Copycats. Ruth is the founder of yet another group, Fruits and Vegetables on a Tripod. Check it out!

So, all of that is the background for my photograph here. The photo I chose to copycat can be seen in the first comment box below.

“And so, another year begins.” Said Sky to his friends.

“Another year? What are you on about, Sky?” Asked Bertie.

“We have just started another year, Bertie.”

“Have we? I didn’t realise we had an old one. Who told you about this?”

“I heard the man say it, Bertie. He said have a happy new year to quite a few hoomans and even the odd bear so I understand.” Explained Sky.

“Interesting, I do wonder what a year is and how he lost the last one and where it went.” Said Barnaby looking confused.

“Me too, Barnaby, shall we look for it and see if we can find it?” Asked Bertie.

“No, I don’t think I will if you don’t mind. You see, I wouldn’t know what it was if I did find it and anyway, what would a bear do with it if one did have it in one’s paw or were even sitting on it? Rather careless of the man to lose the old one though.” Said Barnaby.

“I can understand what you are saying, Barnaby, I don’t think I’ll look either. Posh, do you know what a year is and what it looks like?”

“I almost know, Bertie, for it is a hooman thing. It is a space or period of time.” Explained Posh Bear.

“How did the man lose a space or period of time? It all seems very strange to me. One could lose a jar of honey, well I suppose that might be possible, but a space or period of time… that sounds strange to me.” Said Sky shaking his head in amazement.

“No, you do not understand, hoomans, allot a period, about 365 sleeps, and call it a year and once that space or period of time has passed, they start again. That is called a new year. They count each year as it arrives.” Explained Posh Bear.

“Posh, is 365 more than ten? If so, I am not taking any noticed as it becomes confusing for my bear brain.” Said Barnaby while looking at Sky for confirmation that he was asking a sensible question.

“I agree with Barnaby, I have never found any reason to count to more than ten.” Said Sky.

“What if you have more than ten items that you want to count, Sky?” Asked Posh Bear.

“Simple, I just count to ten and then begin again. So, I might have ten and two or three. Really Posh, I thought you could have worked that out yourself.” Said Sky shaking his head in dismay.

“Well, hoomans do not count like that, Sky. They count beyond ten, so this is year 2024, which is a lot of tens.” Explained Posh Bear.

“Posh, do you know where the man put the year he has lost?” Asked Bertie.

“I said, Bertie, the man didn’t lose the year. It came to an end and so they begin again? Last year was 2023 and so now this year is 2024.” Said Posh Bear wishing he hadn’t got involved in this conversation.

“Well, I’m still not going to look for this lost period or space of time, I didn’t lose it, and so it is not my fault it has gone.” Snapped Bertie.

“I agree with Bertie, I am not looking for it either.” Said Sky.

“Me neither, but I might if I knew what it looked like.” Added Barnaby.

“Anyone bear for honey?” Asked Posh Bear trying to change the subject.

“Good idea, Posh. It is as well we take more care of our honey than the man takes of his period or space of time or we would never have any honey at all.” Said Barnaby.

“Quite right, Barnaby. Come on, let us share a jar of Posh’s honey. You are very kind, Posh, thank you so much for we were wondering how we would get some honey, as we are all out, until it arrives later today.” Said Sky smiling happily.

At a college for the Deaf, Leger Way, Doncaster, South Yorkshire, England, United Kingdom. Date unknown, circa 1987, give or take a year.

About the photograph.

Those candid photographs were taken with a Minolta X-700 35mm film SLR camera, and either a 135mm lens or 80-200mm zoom lens. The roll of film was Ilford, likely to be either FP4 or HP5, as those are the two black and white film that I ways use.

The photographs were taken from the window of the guest room at the top (third) floor of an accommodation building for deaf students who lives far away and stays at the college.

As deaf people communicate by sign language, which is a visual form of communications, there is no need to be within earshot of each other or to shout over long distance, like hearing people do. Thus a lot of deaf people can simply communicate to each other between outside and inside, across a room, or even across a playing field, as long as there is a line of sight.

This Deaf guy, came over to the building, simply stayed outside and chatted with other deaf students who were at a second floor window.

Here in the photographs, he is seen asking “Why?” in British Sign Language (BSL). I don’t remember if he just asked a single word question, or it was the start of a question like “Why do you…”

In BSL, the sign is done by a tapping the side of index finger to the front of the opposite shoulder, and kind of bounce it off your shoulder (as seen in the second photo).

The facial expression is often used to express the kind of mood. For example: A curiosity “Why do you ask?” or an angry “Why did you do that?”

The photographs were taken about slightly more than a second apart, just the length of time to manually wind on the film, as I did not have the motor drive at that time.

Why did I take those photos?

In 1985, in my last year at a deaf school, I decided that I wanted to attend college to study photography with the aim of becoming a working photographer. But the teacher explained to me that it is not something suited for me, because of my being deaf and having communications difficulties. I told my mother the same thing, but my mother and my family were even less supportive.

Today, it is easy to look back on this and recognise that it is a discrimination, pure and simple.

Despite my efforts to try to apply for a college course in photography, I ended up on a one year further education course at college, suited for school leavers unsure of careers. It was during that time, I redouble my efforts, and tried to get the kind of college course I wanted.

There were different courses available to me, at different colleges, including a deaf college in Doncaster, in South Yorkshire, which is approximately 130 miles away from where I live. Arrangements were made for me to visit the college and have an overnight stay at a guest room, so that the next day, I would have a formal look around and an interview.

I travelled by train to Doncaster, stayed at the guest house, and like any good photographer, I bought along my camera. I decided to do some documentary-like photography while I was visiting the college, and during the early evening, I saw this guy standing there, chatting with the others in the building, so I decided to take a candid shot.

I developed and printed my own photographs, it was only about a couple of years ago, that I decided to scan the prints.

Woodland, Washington State

Following history from www.cedarcreekgristmill.org/

"The Cedar Creek Grist Mill is a working museum, showing visitors the inside workings of a grist mill of that time period. Visitors will be greeted and given a ‘Working Tour’ of how this mill still runs today. Huge pulleys and belts spinning above and below are turning and churning to produce flour, corn meal and even apple cider. These samples are given to the visitors to take home for a first hand experience of the products. No gas or electricity are used, simply mother nature’s water power. All who work here are volunteers and are more than happy to explain how this process works.

The Mill rests on a steep and rocky slope at the bottom of the narrow gorge of Cedar Creek. It is the only grist mill in Washington that has maintained its original structural integrity, mills with stones, and is water powered. A covered bridge spanning Cedar Creek was completed in 1994 and continues to draw visitors from all over the United States."

Taken on December 28 in Richmond, Indiana which explains the Christmas lights in the store. I wasn't paying attention to what kind of store it was (too busy drooling over the bikes), but I didn't think it was a bike shop.

Now we are getting serious. Both of these bikes are very similar to ones which have been ridden in the Tour de France. I hesitate to guess how much each cost, but I'm pretty sure each was several thousand dollars. Even the wheel at the edge of the show was expensive. Besides even seeing them, I was shocked to see no locks. I know I'd never leave any of my bikes alone for more than a few seconds. I even have periodic dreams of them being stolen. Even around a bike shop, I take them inside with me rather than risking damage or loss.

Okay, I have some explaining to do.

Recently I came across an article in a photo magazine in which a photographer explained his amazing 'digital-art' work. He creates an unreal world based on existing elements. For example, a street is transformed into an imaginative scene.

It could come straight out of a movie; creating an amazing mood.

Of course he starts to work from a world in color, that's how normal cameras work. By reducing color saturation significantly and adding the recognizable colors from a nighttime movie scene: blue and green.

By adding fog and adjust the contrast he creates his own world; this has nothing to do with reality. Exactly like in the movies!

This inspired me to get started with a photo I made in 2013 in an alley in Lower Manhattan: Cortlandt Alley, on the borders of Chinatown, Tribeca and SoHo. This is, especially in the evening, a totally deserted alley. They film here regularly for commercials.

Almost nothing you see is real; steam, buildings, colors. But it fits exactly in the picture I have in my head when I take a movie scene in mind.

Of course, the buildings you see really exist, but not in the way they are presented here.

Because I have a b&w camera, I had to add color. And by doing some research how a movie street scene should look like, I came to this result.

I must say that I am very satisfied!

Old man explain life to his future

Is this the real life? Is this just fantasy?

~Queen

I kind of can't even explain how this one happened. I bought a cat mask... I figured I should have something besides clown masks. A friend (that I have never met, but I know he has the potential to be my new best friend!) sent me photos of an abandoned house not far from me. There was a photo of this wall with the cat pictures hanging on it. The wheels started turning... then spinning...I have to go!! He told me where it was, where to park, how to get in.... he told me not to go alone (I, of course ignored that part... as I ignored the VERY large dog that kept an eye on me as I skirted the front of the house, dodging the trail cameras, ignoring the many NO TRESPASSING signs and quickly ducked in by way of an open window).

Probably the most bizarre house I have ever been in.... rooms with little doorways leading through other rooms, trudging through an ankle deep collection of God only knows what on the floor... I made my way up to this room... which turned out to be quite narrow, and I really needed a wider angle lens, and I forgot my remote shutter release, and it's incredibly difficult to see (and breath) with this mask on... and balancing my tripod on top of a few feet of debris... and hitting the shutter and hoping to make it safely to the wall beside the bed, where I had to hold my breath and stay very still and wait for the self timer to click off a long slow exposure... and twice I heard a noise that sounded like someone screaming "Cinnnddddyyyyy" ... I held my breath, no...actually at that point, I pretty much stopped breathing and then convinced myself that it was just a rusty hinge blowing in the wind somewhere... and then a new noise, which turned out to be sleet hitting the roof.... yeah, good times... wishing I had listened and not gone alone. And as I was leaving... I hear a very loud truck start up out behind the house, and I see a person...and pretty sure I'm going to be in trouble NOW.... but I made a run for it, back through the woods and back down to the road where I felt safe again. And this bizarre little photographic souvenir of the day... it'll do for now.... but who wants to go back in there with me and help me get it right?

Homily080423_18thOT

Today, if you feel like I do, that we are surrounded, except when when we are together, by individuals that have no use or interest in Jesus Christ. Recently, I was asked by a very close relative, why I believed in such stuff? We were interrupted before I had a chance to respond. But the question, has caused me to deeply reflect on possible answers. Today, in our Gospel reading, we had the opportunity to hear about the transfiguration of Jesus Christ. Our gospel acclamation states the purpose of the transfiguration quite clearly: “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased, listen to him.” So, we listen to Him. Listening, implies a deep and mature relationship with Jesus…and a love between us that motivates us to be like HIM. My answer to my loved one, would obviously include Jesus Christ, my guide, my companion, and friend. Who are they listening too?

This seems like a very difficult task for many of our peers. Recently, I was listening to a popular podcast, where an educated young woman had become disillusioned with her faith. She proudly stated that she was deconstructing her faith. Eventually, she chose a career as a spiritual director, where she gladly supports others in the process of deconstructing. She strongly avoids the name of Jesus Christ in her own spiritual journey and practice in helping others. She stated quite simply that too many people have been harmed by others under the banner of HIS name. It made me wonder who she is listening too now?

This reminds me of a similar situation in scripture: found in John chapter 6. Where Jesus is preaching about the Bread from Heaven-the Eucharist. He is equating that the bread is his body. “So Jesus said to them Truly, truly, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of man and drink his blood, you have no life in you.” (53) ) “After this saying many of his disciples drew back and no longer walked with him.” Who were they going to listening too now? I thought!

Jesus then responds with a heart wrenching question to his twelve disciples: will you also go away? Peters' response is beautiful stated “Lord to whom shall we go, you have the words of eternal life, and we have believed, and have come to know, that you are the Holy One of God.” Because we are sitting and kneeling in our beloved church...we have a similar response…like Peter, James and John at the transfiguration event…we have the attitude that…it is very good to be here. This is where we listen to Him.

What are the benefits of listening to Jesus? Anastasius of Sinai, in his homily on the feast of the transfiguration in the 7th century states what we receive, beautifully:

“Therefore, since each of us possesses God in his heart and is being transformed into his divine image, we also should cry out with joy: It is good for us to be here—here where all things shine with divine radiance, where there is joy and gladness and exultation; where there is nothing in our hearts but peace, serenity and stillness, where God is seen. For here, in our hearts, Christ takes up his abode together with the Father, saying as he enters: Today salvation has come to this house. With Christ, our hearts receive all the wealth of his eternal blessings, and there where they are stored up for us in him, we see reflected as in a mirror both the first fruits and the whole of the world to come.” (End quote)

Peter, James and John had the awe-inspiring encounter with the transfigured Jesus, and it strengthened their faith for the purpose of sharing “the light” with the world. They had to come down from the mountain and face the complexity of a messy world. They did!

To change is painful. To be a Christian, a follower of Christ means that we have a deep bond with HIM. All relationships that are worthwhile, require us to adjust our lives accordingly. The purpose of our church…is to help form us into being a light for the world. Our transformation takes a lifetime, and this transformation requires us to listen to our conscience… for this is how we are guided in every moment and decision we make. When we receive the light of the world in the Eucharist, we are challenged to take this light, as it is reflected in our acts of kindness, into a dark and divided world.

Now let us prepare to meet Him in the Eucharist! Are we listening for HIS quiet voice within our hearts?

Dolly got it immediately. “Don’t start me on the liver fluke”, they baah’d. They had heard Ruin say more or less the same about the HIV virus, that it was a driver. James rejected the shame relative to that cloud around those types of infections called venereal, that hypocritical blaming and moralising which set them apart. He loved Maupassant’s reaction, his outcry. But that too was probably the spirochete talking. What is defined as madness needs expression too, that extreme perimeter describes the whole

According to James, all life, from the virus, through every species and manifestation up to and including ourselves, and beyond, is equal, and striving towards proliferating itself, celebrating life itself.

The cures are, of course, 'drivers' too.

“Soon mercury will be my staple diet. My hair is beginning to grow again . . . the hair on my arse is sprouting. . . . I’ve got the pox! at last! the real thing! not the contemptible clap, not the ecclesiastical crystalline, not the bourgeois coxcombs or the leguminous cauliflowers—no—no, the great pox, the one which (King) Francis I died of. The majestic pox, pure and simple; the elegant syphilis . . . I’ve got the pox . . . and I am proud of it, by thunder, and to hell with the bourgeoisie. Allelujah, I’ve got the pox, so I don’t have to worry about catching it anymore."

--Guy de Maupassant

As I explained before, for two weeks now I have been, if not bedridden, at least mostly housebound as a result of a crippling knee problem. I can still drive around and run errands when mandatory, but it is hurtful and I am definitely not up to lugging photo equipment and go shooting. Furthermore, when this struck, I didn’t have many photos waiting for upload, what with the Winter season coming to an end, the pandemic still with us that doesn’t really encourage outings (the one day I went out, on March 9, on a photo shoot for the Fondation pour la Sauvegarde de l’Art Français, I became a COVID contact case of someone I had brushed against during the day, luckily without any consequence as I never was infected)... not to mention ridiculous wartime gas prices!

The bottom line is, a couple of days ago, I simply ran out of stuff to upload...

So, today, I had the idea to turn to some older photographs of mine to which I had, in 2021, given a “new life” by creating black-and-white versions of them for the purpose of a photographic essay that had been requested from me by the Department of Mediæval Studies of a US university. The essay’s theme was the emulation, with the tools of today, of the gorgeous black-and-white photography found in the books of the Zodiaque collection La Nuit des temps, devoted to religious art and architecture of the Romanesque age in Europe, and in particular in France. I’m sure many of you have heard about those books and/or own some of them.

Anyway, since those black-and-white versions are available, I figured I might as well upload them to offer you, who are kind enough to follow my stream, something to look at while I recover and until I can resume more normal photo activities...

Thank you in advance for your patience, and I hope you will enjoy this “renewed” content à la Zodiaque! I will put in a short description of each photo below.

The grandiose ruins of the Saint-Hippolyte fortified church in the village of Bonnay in Burgundy. Long exposure, ND1000 filter.

My photographic beginnings (sometime last century!) were rooted in black and white analog processing. I think this may explain my nostalgic yearning for monochrome and occasional self-indulgence in good old black and white.

Bet this doesn’t make much sense- right?

So the saga - we are three people needing the use of one car. The owner of said car (me) is short and getting shorter every year. The other principal driver is short-ish but not that short. The other thing you need to know is that my beloved Honda Fit is older, is a stick shift and I adore it

So when the other principal driver uses said vehicle, she adjusts the seat and mirrors to work for her. She does try to return things back but sometimes she’s *way* off - the seat back so far I can’t reach the clutch without a stretching exercise that would please my physical therapist’s heart. And sometimes the seat is so far forward that you’d have to be a munchkin or a five year old to even get into the car.

In an effort to be helpful and solution-based, I took a trusty silver Sharpie marker out and marked where I thought the optimal seating position might be for me. Although it’s not perfect, it seems to be about right. Of course I plumb forgot to tell the other principal driver that I’d created this helpful mark, but I finally did think to send her a text showing it yesterday.

So does anybody know of a reliable good used not too old Toyota Corolla for sale that’s been well-maintained, is an automatic, has got low-ish mileage and has been carefully driven by, say, a little old lady only to church/temple/mosque on Sundays/Saturdays or bingo or shopping? We’re in the market!!

This is a scene from the Golden Arches in Abilene while on our little Kansas road trip over the weekend. Andy and I both spotted this little person and his big boy cowboy hat just as picture tells you. Before I went inside to introduce myself to his mother and explain my project, Andy had already named him "Little Tex." Zane's mother was happy to allow me to add this cutie pie to the collection.
