Normally, Jongmyo Shrine is only open for guided tours on most days. However, I was able to get in without a guided tour because it was on a Saturday which was the only day not needing a guided tour. Still, I got a glimpse on how much importance South Koreans put on cultural education to their kids.
Right over here in this photo was a guide in hanbok explaining to the kids what was Jongmyo Shrine used in the past. A really interesting thing to note is that despite fast changes and foreign influence over the decades, Korea has still managed to keep many of its traditions.
This takes a bit of explaining. At the group We’re Here! we select a photographic challenge every day based on a new Flickr group we take turns picking. One of the most loved of our members is the funny, kind, clever, creative, and very talented Ruth Raymond, aka ruthlesscrab. Today’s challenge is to copycat ruthlesscrab and the group we are visiting is Ruthless Copycats. Ruth is the founder of yet another group, Fruits and Vegetables on a Tripod. Check it out!
So, all of that is the background for my photograph here. The photo I chose to copycat can be seen in the first comment box below.

monologue from 'La nuit juste avant les forêts' by Bernard-Marie Koltès
forgive my translation:
we would have to be someplace else without anyone around, my friend
when I come to tell you what I have to tell you, feel good like lying on the grass, something like that
that one no longer has to move with the shadow of the trees.
Then I would say: 'here I'm fine, here is my house, I lie down and greet you'.
But here, my friend, it's impossible, never seen a place where they leave you alone and say hello.
We have to send you away, they tell you, go there, you go there
Go over there, take your ass off there
and you're packing your bag, the job is somewhere else,
always somewhere else you have to go looking for it,
there is no time to lie down and to let go, there is not
time to explain and say 'i'll say goodbye'.
Kicked in the ass they would send you away, the work is there, farther and farther, up to Nicaragua.
If you want to work, you have to move, never that you can say 'this is my house and I'll say goodbye'
so much so that when I leave a place I always have the impression that this will be my home,
more than the one I'm going to live.
When they kick your ass again, you go away again
Where you go, you're always more foreign, less and less at home.
And when they kick your ass, you go away again
when you turn to look back, friend, it's always the desert.
Let's stop once and let's say 'fuck you'
I do not move anymore, you must listen to me
if we lie down on the grass for once and take all the time
that you tell your story, those coming from Nicaragua
that we tell ourselves that we are all, more or less foreign
but that's enough now, we're going to hear, calmly, all we have to say
So yes, you understand that they do not give a shit about us.
I stopped, I listened, I said to myself: 'I do not work anymore'
as long as you do not give a fuck about me.
What's the use of Nicaragua's coming up here and I'm going over there
if on all sides the same story.
When I worked again, I spoke to everyone kicked in the ass that landed here
to find work and they have been listening to me.
I have been listening to those from Nicaragua who have explained to me how it is from them
Over there there is an old general, who stays all day and all night at the edge of a forest
they bring him food because he does not have to move
who shoots on everything that moves
they bring him the ammunition when he does not have any more.
They talked to me about a general with his soldiers surrounding the forest
everything that moves becomes a target
everything that appears at the edge of the forest
all they notice that it does not have the same color as the trees
and that does not move the same way
I've been listening to this and I've been told that it's the same thing on all sides
the more I get kicked in the ass and the more I'll be a stranger
they end up here and I'll end up there
over there where everything that moves is hidden in the mountains
I have listened to all this and I said to myself: "I do not move any more, if there is no work I do not work
if work has to make me crazy and I have to kick my ass, I do not work anymore
I want to lie down, once and for all, I want to explain myself, I want the grass
the shadow of the trees, I want to scream, I want to be able to scream, even if they then shoot at me, they do that anyway,
if you do not agree, if you open your mouth,
you must hide at the bottom of the forest. But then it's better this way
at least I will have told you what I must tell you.

(Cut to stage left where Caly and Levi use their weapons to kill the two guards in the wings, and Caly spots Sienna, Mateo, and Ronan on the opposite side of the stage.)
Levi: They've made Trajan a lifevessel?
Caly: I guess he's bigger on the inside, now.
(Caly gives Levi a smile and a shrug before leaping off the stage and dashing down the length of the remaining queue in front of Lilitus, her right hand brushing the skin of each human as she passes, skipping Dyanna, and the people sway, each feeling a little lightheaded. She stops before Lilitus.)
Caly: Well, hello imperious impersonator.
Lilitus: (looking down at Caly) Tenet scum!
Caly: Now that we're acquainted--
(Caly leaps onto the edge of the stage, landing on her left hand and kicking out with both feet, hitting the heavy podium and sending it crashing into Lilitus, sending both skidding to the back of the stage.)
Mateo: Think that's the sign?
Sienna: Looks like a sign to me.
(Sienna, Mateo, and Ronan dash onto the ballroom floor from one side of the stage while Levi dashes out from the other side)
Levi: Ronan! Get the humans out! (pointing at the dizzy formal-attired humans, then starting to kill what remained of guards of those waiting to board)
(Cut to the back of the stage where Lilitus kicks the podium away like it was paper, facing off with Caly.)
Lilitus: I've consumed dozens of lives, tenet!
Caly: That explains the chin bloat.
Lilitus: (drawing a different sort of weapon than Caly held) Die, traitor!
(Caly performs a quick backflip as Lilitus fires, the beam passing over her, scoring the carpet. Caly glances at the burn pattern where she'd been a moment before.)
Caly: Okay, lesson learned. I shouldn't body shame.

Balsams make really nice, and fragrant, Christmas trees... string together some of those berries from the mountain ash to get a head start on decorations!
I may be preaching to the choir here as I point out that Joyce and I are always quite busy this time of year. I’ll be scrambling around today for last minute ingredients for meals I’m preparing for a Christmas gathering of international students from Duke University with International Students, Inc tomorrow evening at our church’s fellowship hall. The meal is potluck-style, with many members of our church pitching in, as we may be feeding 150+ people. We must be concerned about dietary restrictions of some the students, Muslims for instance, so I’m making a huge pot of gluten-free rotini pasta with Bolognese sauce and southern-style chicken and dumplings… comfort food. Others will be making vegan dishes and desserts. I will be there early to coordinate the kitchen and the food… Joyce will be there to help with finishing touches on holiday decorations.... after she returns from Boydton, Virginia, where she's also setting up decorations at the historic Boyd Tavern along with the mayor's wife... she knows how to hobnob.
At this gathering last year, I sat at a table with a few first-year engineering students from China. Engineering is something I understand, so we had a pretty good conversation going on. That conversation led to issues of regionalism and colloquialism that we found quite funny. "Regionalism" eventually reached across the world when they asked me what I thought of them. I'm sitting there with science-minded young adults brilliant enough to attend one of the most elite schools in the world from a country that insists communism is their only God... and yet, I was able to explain God to them and why we celebrate His birth at Christmas. In doing so, I explained how God tells me that I can't say that I love Him without also loving them... that's much of the theme of the Book of James. They sat silent for a bit after that, though I could see something was whirling around in their heads. As I gathered my stuff to leave that evening, they were lined up at the door to thank me and hug me for talking to them... and one of them now attends church with us. Time spent with God never returns void.
After church this Sunday, we're both headed back to Boydton, a little over an hour away on the far side of Kerr Lake, to participate in the open house Christmas activities there. I will be taking photos of kids with Santa Claus... which should up my ante on the naughty or nice quotient. Time will tell.
Arganzuela Street in Madrid, at approximately number 30 on that street, has this curious rectangular hole in a brick wall where there is a relief with the number two and the word "amor" (love) painted on it.
I have not been able to get anyone in the vicinity of the place to explain to me what the meaning or history of this relief is.
Searching on Google Maps I have seen that this rectangular hole did not contain the number two some months ago, but I have not been able to find anything else.
It is a real enigma of popular art in the city.

Today marked the last day of the school year at Mischief Managed. I can’t even begin to explain how much of a blessing this place has been the past month. I joined MM with a year left in the school year but I still had the opportunity to meet so many amazing people. I have dreamed of joining MM for years now but my interest was restored a few months ago when coming across some of Saffron’s photos. However, it wasn’t until May when I felt down in the dumps over RP in SL did I decide to take control of my situation and apply to MM. I chose to use Iveron, my male avatar, for this RP as he has never had a RP of all his own. It’s always been Georgia. Here I have been allowed to truly create an independent person for Iveron and grow into fully enjoying playing a male avatar. Of course all of my avatars represent me, but Iveron is a more direct representation of me in not just the physical form. Through him I am now able to explore being an openly gay male and putting myself into social situations that I may not in RL. It is a truly liberating experience and I have MM to thank for putting me out there. Well, where do we go from here? Luckily MM is setting up Diagon Alley for some RP fun and many of us have summer plans set up with our friends from school. I have not felt so much love for a group of people and felt it reciprocated since the last big RP change in my life with 1920s Berlin in 2014 Berlin is now going on 4 years for me so who knows where MM will take me. Once again, thank you MM from the bottom of my heart for giving me an environment to express myself in as well as delivering so many amazing people into my life. Until next term!

We saw these handmade wooden boxes along the fence lines, all through rural western Oregon. They were filled with rocks and spaced about 50 meters apart. My only guess was that they were places to put the rocks found in the fields. But that didn't make much sense.
So the first time we stopped for gas I asked the attendant, who was running out to grab the pump handle from my hands (This is Oregon, where you can't pump your own gas!).
It took a few tries to get him to understand what I was asking, but eventually he gave me a look that said "What a dumb question" and explained that the boxes full of rocks are there to hold the fence up. The ground is too rocky to drive even steel posts down sufficiently, so without these anchors the fence blows away.
So, when in Oregon, don't try to pump your own gas and don't ask about the boxes full of rocks.
If, on the other hand, you get a hankering for a doobie, they're legal. Even to smoke in public, I gather.
Corie's a fellow photographer, which makes it an added joy to shoot her, as I don't have to stop to explain things, and can instead strip-mine her brain for tips and such.
I also got the sense that (and I could of course be way off-base, here) she's not a strange person.
I say that because I AM a strange person, and every once in awhile I'd notice her get a subtle, "boy, he's a bit strange isn't he?" expression on her face.
But she didn't run screaming, or beg off with a hastily conceived excuse, so I guess it didn't go too badly.
Ah hell, who am I kidding, it went great! She's a great model, very relaxed, got a look I adore.
AND LOOK AT THESE GLASSES!!!!! SO AWESOME. Sorry. So awesome.
More Corie, up on the BLOG!
I wish I can say this so bad to all the Jb haters, but in there a different way of course, lol

Quadra Island
"From one end to the other, Quadra Island measure 37 km (23 miles) as the eagle flies. Its wide northern end, rising up in rocky bluffs and mountainous peaks, is short on roads and population, but to make up for that it has a scattering of lovely lakes and a sprawl of hiking trails. Some areas here still are old growth, but almost all of the island's forests are second growth dating from the late [19th] to the early [20th] century. As yet the island is still largely forested, but clearcut logging marches on--sometimes too close for comfort.
"The island's contours seem to have been largely cut out with a fretsaw, creating an abundance of bays, coves, harbours and headlands along its ragged coast, with the leftover bits flung aside to form offshore islands...all along with Quadra itself, part of the Discovery Islands of the east coast of Vancouver Island. Beaches are few--mostly pebbly--and all of them surrender to a full moon's high tide."
- Hilary Stewart, "On Island Time," 1998, pp. 27-28
Diverging from roads throughout the island are woodlots. Hilary writes, "Woodlots of up to 400 ha (988 acres) are available to individuals under a [15] year licence that is renewable every [5] years. The licensee manages the woodlot on a long-term basis for sustained yield and biodiversity, harvesting selected trees, planting news one, and encouraging natural regrowth. This type of logging has a minimal effect on the environment, so that the woods remain attractive to both wildlife and hikers."

I captured this image through glass in a display case of a museum, hand held in existing light. What do you see when you look into this image? A texture of midtoned whites and slightly muted blacks are on display in this seashell image converted to black and white and inverted to a negative for this effect.
Turkey Vulture
The Turkey Vulture (Cathartes aura), also known in some North American regions as the Turkey Buzzard (or just Buzzard), and in some areas of the Caribbean as the John Crow or Carrion Crow, is a Vulture that is the most widespread of the New World Vultures. One of three species in the genus Cathartes of the family Cathartidae, the Turkey Vulture ranges from southern Canada to the southernmost tip of South America. It inhabits a variety of open and semi-open areas, including subtropical forests, scrublands, pastures, and deserts.
The Turkey Vulture is a scavenger and feeds almost exclusively on carrion. It finds its food using its keen eyes and sense of smell, flying low enough to detect the gases produced by the beginnings of the process of decay in dead animals. In flight, it uses thermals to move through the air, flapping its wings infrequently. It roosts in large community groups. Lacking a syrinx—the vocal organ of birds—its only vocalizations are grunts or low hisses. It nests in caves, hollow trees, or thickets. Each year it generally raises two chicks, which it feeds by regurgitation. It has very few natural predators. In the United States, the vulture receives legal protection under the Migratory Bird Treaty Act of 1918.
Unlike all other raptors, vultures are not birds of prey. They feed solely on carrion, preferring animals that have been dead for two to four days. This certainly explains why they, unlike all other raptors, lack strong, grasping feet and talons. Feeding on carrion has led to a number of other vulture adaptations.

The total number of patients infected with the new coronavirus (Covid-19) in the Belgian hospitals continues to decrease, announced the Federal Public Health Service during its daily press briefing yesterday. They reported 310 new patients that were admitted to the hospital in the last 24 hours whilst 455 people were discharged and declared recovered, bringing the total number of people in the hospital because of the coronavirus to 5,309. Unfortunately, also 417 new deaths have been reported. The total number of deaths in Belgium since the beginning of the pandemic is currently 4,857. Many people ask why Belgium reports significantly more deaths than other European countries during this corona crisis. I don’t know… The government argues that Belgium is including all deaths in its daily figures, i.e. confirmed corona deaths in hospitals together with deaths in care homes, including many unconfirmed COVID-19 cases. It is not always clear whether the people who died in a care home actually succumbed because of the novel corona virus. So this is how they explain why our daily rate and total number of fatalities is higher per capita than in our neighbouring country. After conflicting/confusing communication regarding mouth masks and lockdown measures at retirement homes I’m very skeptical about what to believe and what not to believe. I guess the future will tell if the authorities have been transparent about this one. Stay Safe, Stay Healthy – Korenlei, Ghent, Belgium.
It is located at the western tip of Ile de la Cité, in the Saint-Germain-l'Auxerrois district of the 1st arrondissement.
The level of the square is seven meters lower than the current level of the other parts of the island, which corresponds to the level it once had.
The weak overhang of the square with respect to the Seine explains that it is flooded, or even totally submerged during the most important floods of the river.
The square owes its name to Henry IV, nicknamed "Vert-Galant" because of his many mistresses despite his advanced age.
It was created by the union of several small islands, including the Isle of the Jews, where the last Templars were burned, and the island of the Patriarch.
A commemorative plaque also recalls that this is where, on March 18, 1314, the executions at the stake of the two highest dignitaries of the Order of the Temple, Jacques de Molay and Geoffroy de Charnay took place. (Source: Wikipedia)

(Fuente: Wikipedia)

Boundary Bay before the big storm.
Meteorologists are calling the weather event a "bomb cyclone."
“In order for it to be a meteorological bomb, it has to have a pressure drop of 24 millibars in 24 hours. This has dropped 50 millibars in 24 hours so it's like a double kind of a mega storm,” said Dave Phillips, a senior climatologist for Environment Canada.
The storm system is expected to bring extremely high winds.
“These are historic winds. I mean they're almost the kind of wind you'd see in a hurricane,” Phillips explained.

Today, if you feel like I do, that we are surrounded, except when when we are together, by individuals that have no use or interest in Jesus Christ. Recently, I was asked by a very close relative, why I believed in such stuff? We were interrupted before I had a chance to respond. But the question, has caused me to deeply reflect on possible answers. Today, in our Gospel reading, we had the opportunity to hear about the transfiguration of Jesus Christ. Our gospel acclamation states the purpose of the transfiguration quite clearly: “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased, listen to him.” So, we listen to Him. Listening, implies a deep and mature relationship with Jesus…and a love between us that motivates us to be like HIM. My answer to my loved one, would obviously include Jesus Christ, my guide, my companion, and friend. Who are they listening too?
This seems like a very difficult task for many of our peers. Recently, I was listening to a popular podcast, where an educated young woman had become disillusioned with her faith. She proudly stated that she was deconstructing her faith. Eventually, she chose a career as a spiritual director, where she gladly supports others in the process of deconstructing. She strongly avoids the name of Jesus Christ in her own spiritual journey and practice in helping others. She stated quite simply that too many people have been harmed by others under the banner of HIS name. It made me wonder who she is listening too now?
This reminds me of a similar situation in scripture: found in John chapter 6. Where Jesus is preaching about the Bread from Heaven-the Eucharist. He is equating that the bread is his body. “So Jesus said to them Truly, truly, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of man and drink his blood, you have no life in you.” (53) ) “After this saying many of his disciples drew back and no longer walked with him.” Who were they going to listening too now? I thought!
Jesus then responds with a heart wrenching question to his twelve disciples: will you also go away? Peters' response is beautiful stated “Lord to whom shall we go, you have the words of eternal life, and we have believed, and have come to know, that you are the Holy One of God.” Because we are sitting and kneeling in our beloved church...we have a similar response…like Peter, James and John at the transfiguration event…we have the attitude that…it is very good to be here. This is where we listen to Him.
What are the benefits of listening to Jesus? Anastasius of Sinai, in his homily on the feast of the transfiguration in the 7th century states what we receive, beautifully:
“Therefore, since each of us possesses God in his heart and is being transformed into his divine image, we also should cry out with joy: It is good for us to be here—here where all things shine with divine radiance, where there is joy and gladness and exultation; where there is nothing in our hearts but peace, serenity and stillness, where God is seen. For here, in our hearts, Christ takes up his abode together with the Father, saying as he enters: Today salvation has come to this house. With Christ, our hearts receive all the wealth of his eternal blessings, and there where they are stored up for us in him, we see reflected as in a mirror both the first fruits and the whole of the world to come.” (End quote)
Peter, James and John had the awe-inspiring encounter with the transfigured Jesus, and it strengthened their faith for the purpose of sharing “the light” with the world. They had to come down from the mountain and face the complexity of a messy world. They did!
To change is painful. To be a Christian, a follower of Christ means that we have a deep bond with HIM. All relationships that are worthwhile, require us to adjust our lives accordingly. The purpose of our church…is to help form us into being a light for the world. Our transformation takes a lifetime, and this transformation requires us to listen to our conscience… for this is how we are guided in every moment and decision we make. When we receive the light of the world in the Eucharist, we are challenged to take this light, as it is reflected in our acts of kindness, into a dark and divided world.
Now let us prepare to meet Him in the Eucharist! Are we listening for HIS quiet voice within our hearts?
There's something magical when you dress and feel so good something in your heart that races and skips it's difficult to explain. But if you've gladly it you will understand. Thank you for the recent comments and messages 💋😀xx
At the Plaça de Toros Monumental de Barcelona, the now disused historic downtown bullfighting ring, lies a very modest museum whose objective is to keep the spirit of this now banned (in Catalonia, at least) sport alive.
We were the first customers to show up this morning, and the custodian opened the exhibits for us and even gave us a private tour, explaining us everything in Catalan. Let's say we got the jist of his message - he's a 3rd (or so) generation torreador who knows nothing but bullfighting and the business around it. He was intensely prooud of his heritage and that came through loud & clear despite our linguistic differences.
Wait! I can explain!
You see, we've been working our tails off this past week getting ready for the pond guy to come and rebuild our pond and waterfall - which starts tomorrow!
Yes, the pond guy is going to do all the hard work, but I wanted to make sure the parts he wasn't working on are going to look acceptable next to his wonderful new pond.
Well, new waterfall.
We are actually ditching the pond - too hard to maintain and one can only fish so many Lacrosse Balls out of its inky depths before the glamour wears off.
Soo... after I'm not even sure how many years... 3? 5? (seems like forever) of having a dry rock pit, we are going to (hopefully) end up with TWO streams/waterfalls disappearing into cobbles.
No more lost Lacrosse Balls!
Soo... I just wanted to document what it looked like NOW, so when I post a shot of the boys posing in front of the finished product you can see how far we came.
When will it be finished?
The pond guy said a week to 10 days.
Finger's crossed!
