SNV, they believe that no one should live in poverty. Driven by the Sustainable Development Goals, SNV dedicate their work to a society in which every individual is free to pursue his/her own sustainable development.
Their work focuses on increasing people’s incomes and access to basic services in agriculture, energy, water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH). Their projects directly benefit millions of people (4.4M in 2018) and drive systems change by strengthening institutions and kick-starting markets. By connecting their global expertise with longstanding in-country presence, they help realise locally-owned solutions. And they do so in more than 25 countries worldwide.
SNV Netherlands Development Organisation is a not-for-profit international development organisation that makes a lasting difference in the lives of people living in poverty by helping them raise incomes and access basic services. With a long-term, local presence in over 25 countries in Asia, Africa and Latin America, they know how governments work, which written and unwritten rules exist, and how relationships are built. The backbone of SNV team is more than 1,300 staff.
Local presence and know-how
With their extensive on-the-ground track record, they can adjust approaches when circumstances change on the ground. SNV staff are regarded as honest brokers. They know that the main predictor for a successful solution in a given country or context is the enthusiasm with which their staff and partners embrace it. Only by listening can we adapt our global expertise to each specific setting is the eye behind operations. They constantly renew with innovative global knowledge and lessons learned from practice. This adds to their value proposition and distinguishes them from local service providers.
Expertise in three sectors
SNV aim for premium quality. This is the reason why they have made a deliberate choice to focus on just three sectors:
✅agriculture
✅energy
✅WASH.
They work in selected countries where they build long-term partnerships and speak the language – literally and figuratively. In all they do, they aim to make a difference by implementing projects that create direct results and bring about systems change.
Operational excellence
SNV extensively collaborate with partners that complement and re-energise their operations such as knowledge institutions, private consultancy firms and non-governmental organisations. They invest in market-based approaches and work extensively with the private sector. They are a trusted partner of local and national governments. SNV is proud to be a not-for-profit organisation, implementing their mission exclusively through project financing. This requires them to work efficiently and invest in operational excellence every day.
For the strategic period 2019-2022, SNV will contribute to sustainable change in WASH delivery systems in at least 19 countries. Ultimately, they envision a world that enables all people’s access to affordable and reliable WASH services – leaving no one behind.
In households, schools, and health facilities, their programmes are designed to build professional, organisational, and inter-institutional capacities to deliver environmentally and financially sustainable rural and urban WASH services. Through programme implementation, joined-up thinking, and research – conducted with partners in government, private sector and civil society.
SNV contributions:
• provide evidence to integrate sanitation information in wider district-, provincial and city planning;
• assist public authorities to better target investments and oversee the efficient operationalisation of services;
• create the conditions and capacities for private sector engagement in WASH; and
• instill long-lasting sanitation and hygiene behaviours amongst consumers and professions in the frontline of WASH services delivery.
SANITATION FOR ALL CITIZENS
In the strategic period 2019–2022, SNV aims to contribute to sustainable change in WASH service delivery systems in at least 19 countries by building professional, organisational and inter-institutional capacity to deliver environmentally and financially sustainable rural and urban WASH services – for households, schools and health facilities. They encourage change and innovation from within. An example of this is the integration of housing, tax and sanitation information, and district- and provincial-wide planning for WASH.
SNV also helps public authorities target investments effectively and operate services efficiently, and we will improve the accountability of service providers and regulators. This work will be founded on evidence-based research that they conduct jointly with government, the private sector and civil society.
Their programmes will create the conditions and capacities for private-sector engagement in WASH and, where appropriate, will strengthen their ability to deliver long-lasting WASH services that are accessible, affordable and reliable.
SNV also build capacities for long-term behaviour change in hygiene, occupational health and safety, and compliance with safety standards. Furthermore, they strengthen the capacity of civil society in advocating for WASH services, and encourage collaboration between stakeholders and public authorities.
Targets for WASH 2019–2022
• 2 million people with improved access to sanitation
• 2 million people with access to drinking water
• 1 million people practising hand washing with soap
Sustainable Sanitation and Hygiene for Health and Development (SSH4A)
SNV works together with local authorities to develop area-wide sanitation service delivery models for their jurisdictions with the aim to create and/or change WASH systems by using a hands-on approach, working collaboratively towards improved sanitation and hygiene, and continuously reflecting and learning. The approach creates demand for sanitation services, develops sanitation supply chains in rural areas, builds capacity for behaviour change and strengthens WASH governance systems. Over the past five years this integrated approach has proven successful in more than 160 districts in 18 countries. Their operations place users at the centre of our efforts: households, schools, health facilities and public places. Understanding users, and their diversity of needs, is essential for sustainable sanitation.
Urban Sanitation and Hygiene for Health and Development (USHHD)
In urban areas SNV works on city-wide inclusive sanitation services for all. In partnership with city authorities and utilities, they aim to change the way in which human waste is managed. SNV address the needs of diverse populations, encompass all parts of the sanitation service chain and recognise that different geographical areas will require different service delivery models.
models. They guide stakeholders through a process of informed choice regarding technologies, finance strategies, regulation and service delivery models that discusses trade-offs, in particular regarding low-income groups and slum residents. Working with the private sector, they develop financially viable, sustainable business models for the treatment, re-use and safe disposal of human waste, and we work with communities on service models that are safe and affordable.
Area-wide Rural Water Supply Services (ARWSS)
We pursue an integrated rural water supply approach that looks at the sustainability of services across districts, and responds to changing communities. We endorse performance standards for water operators, irrespective of whether they are private, public or community run. Our work contributes to solving service issues relating to water, including the continuity of water services, equal access to water points, water quality, sustainability of services and resilience to extreme events (climatic and social).
SNV works with local stakeholders to develop appropriate management models and post-construction support for districts that are embedded in local WASH governance structures and supported by evidence-based behavioural change campaigns.
Opportunities for Youth Employment (OYE)
In this strategy period SNV scaled up their work on creating job opportunities for young people across agriculture, energy and WASH.
Their opportunity for youth employment (OYE) approach includes creating employment opportunities (pull), basic skills training (push), and market placement and enterprise development (match). They also help young people to find jobs by getting our network of companies in agriculture, energy and WASH interested in offering vocational training and on-the-job learning, and offering concrete employment opportunities.
They also offer help to young people to fulfill their entrepreneurial aspirations by developing their skills and knowledge through training, facilitating access to money to set themselves up, and by coaching them in leadership and business skills.

Monday 27 - Tuesday 28 October 2014, Belfast: A number of Everton in the Community’s Youth Engagement coaches visited Belfast to coach football as part of our work in Shankill and Whiterock.
Hundreds of youngsters benefited from the expertise of the Club’s official charity, which used the power of the game and the badge of Everton Football Club to encourage the children to work together and network through the medium of sport.
Taking football sessions in the Nationalist area of Whiterock and the Unionist area of Falls Road, Shankhill, hundreds of youngsters, both Catholic and Protestant, enjoyed the afternoons, which form part of the Active Communities Network to break down barriers in Northern Ireland while carrying on the good work of the Good Friday Agreement.
Away from the pitch, the concept also teaches, diversity, single-identity training, with graduates obtaining a Vocationally Related Qualifications (VRQs), which is being delivered by Active Communities.
“The whole initiative has been a real success,” said Everton in the Community Youth Engagement coordinator, Paul Nagle. “Regardless of religion, race or colour, here at Everton in the Community we always preach inclusion.
“Through the medium of football, and the power of the badge of Everton Football Club, we can break down barriers of prejudice in a bid to promote more harmonious societies.
“It has been a real pleasure to help Active Communities Network and we look forward to this becoming a long, successful initiative.”
Moving forward, a number of youngsters from Northern Ireland will be hosted by the Club’s official charity next year in March to take part in similar footballing sessions in Liverpool as well as enjoying the atmosphere of Goodison Park when the Blues take on Newcastle.
Much like Active Communities Network, Everton in the Community aims to tackle poverty and social deprivation at the heart of neighbourhoods.
The charity’s Kicks programme sees coaches lead football sessions throughout areas in Liverpool that have high incidents of crime and anti-social behaviour, to encourage children to develop their potential.
Funded by the Premier League, Merseyside Council and Merseyside Police, the project works towards creating stronger, more respectful communities through football, and has proved both popular and successful and as a result a significant drop in crime has been reported by Merseyside Police.

I'm BLESSEDselling author, E. N. Joy, the writer behind the five book “New Day Divas,” series coined the “Soap Opera In Print.” Formerly writing secular works under the names Joylynn M. Jossel and JOY, I'm an award winning author sharing my literary expertise on conference panels in my home town of Columbus, Ohio as well as cities across the country.
After thirteen years of being a paralegal in the insurance industry, I finally divorced my career and married my mistress and my passion; writing. In 2000, I formed her own publishing company, END OF THE RAINBOW projects, where I published my own works until landing a book deal with a major publisher. Under End of the Rainbow, I have published New York Times and Essence Magazine Bestselling authors in the “Sinner Series,” in which the current releases are Even Sinners Have Souls (Book 1) and Even Sinners Have Souls TOO (Book 2).
In 2004, I branched off into the business of literary consulting in which I provide one-on-one consulting and literary services such as ghost writing, editing, professional read-throughs, write behinds, etc… My clients consist of first time authors, Essence Magazine bestselling authors, New York Times bestselling authors, and entertainers.
Not forsaking my love of poetry in which I have published two works of poetry titled Please Tell Me If the Grass is Greener and World On My Shoulders, I plans to turn my focus back to poetry one day. I no longer pen street lit (in which two of my titles, If I Ruled the World and Dollar Bill, made the Essence Magazine bestsellers list. Dollar Bill was also translated to Japanese. I will no longer be penning erotica or adult contemporary fiction either, in which one of my titles earned the Borders bestselling African American romance award at the Romance Writers of America National Conference. Instead, under the name E.N. Joy, I will be penning adult Christian fiction, and under the name N. Joy I will be penning children’s and young adult titles. My children’s story, The Secret Olivia Told Me, received the American Library Association Coretta Scott King Honor. Book club rights have also been purchased by Scholastic and the book is on tour at Scholastic Book Fairs in schools across the country. Elementary and middle school children have fallen in love with reading and creative writing as a result of the readings and workshops I instruct in schools across the country. Currently I am the executive editor for Urban Christian, in which the titles are distributed by Kensington Publishing Corporation out of New York. When I'm not adding my two cents to other authors’ works, I'm diligently working on my own. My latest project, the “New Day Divas” series, is taking the literary world by storm. Book one of the series, She Who Finds A Husband and Book two, Been There Prayed That, are currently dominating book stores and libraries all over the country. I am certain this project is the one that is going to afford me the title of New York Times Bestselling Author. Until then, she doesn’t mind the title of BLESSEDselling author.
