day eighty-seven / september 17, 2012
My birthday this year was mostly emotional and frustrating, because I had a horrible sunstroke and I'd been a little afraid it wouldn't feel quite right to be so far away from home anyway, since I was on holiday in Corsica.
What was lovely was being woken up by my friends, who had gotten up early to prepare breakfast. They'd made me coffee and Julian made crêpes and there were two birthday cards on my plate.
But I was feeling more sick the later it got, and by late afternoon I found myself crying alone in the car. The weird thing about it was that I only felt so bad about it all when I actually went through the day in my head, which I did over and over again, and kind of looked at myself from far away. Which was clearly the wrong way to handle it all, because it didn't help much and I really just kept wallowing in self-pity. The only good thing about all of it was that my friends showed so much support as soon as they noticed I was feeling so sad. Nina made me lay on the beach in the dark with her, and we talked (really talked) more during that hour than during the whole week. It was one of those situations that make you realise that in all the sadness and nostalgia and expectations we sometimes suffer from, the little moments really show us that things are alright. It was just a little bit of comfort in the midst of the pain I was feeling all day.
What I learned this year is that we can't always expect to get as much as we give, for everyone attaches importance to different aspects in a friendship. And I need to remember that I might not notice what others pay attention to either. It's not easy, but I'm getting there.
What I also learned is that I wouldn't want to spend another birthday without at least one sunflower, because what else is there to cling to if all else fails than a little symbol of familiarity? :)

Aspettative.
Tutti abbiamo delle aspettative. Tranne i morti. E forse i depressi.

Great Expectations (Team Canada) was the winning sculpture from the 2012 International Snow Sculpture Championships in Breckenridge Colorado. It's a sculpture of an ice fisherman sitting in front of his hut. The sculpture to the right is Correfoc (Team Catalonia-Spain). I really like the colored led lights they added to the show last year.

In the old days, weekends were reserved for meals out, long drives, and fun. Fortunately, I can alter that expectation to go with an NCIS marathon, reading on the couch, and fun with pictures.
Hope you're having fun!

This young ram was licking the salt along the roadside at Blue Mesa Lake earlier this week. He looks to be about 3 years old and if his dad was the ram that I hope it was, this young man has the chances of being a car stopper. In the meantime I hope he stays out of the road and safe.
We saw plenty of Rocky Mountain Bighorns on this day, but this young man was the only one that really cooperated for a portrait!
Hope you enjoy this shot and Happy New Year to all of my great friends on Flickr!

So this is the end of the umbrella week. Did you like it? I will go shooting again on sunday and maybe this will lead to another series of whatever next week.
Lets see but say goodbye to the umbrella first. Maybe it'll come back.
For many information and a look behind the scenes of my photography visit
I can't remember exactly the sequence of events but with some distance between the two parties, Bruce approached me. Looking back, I could see there were signs from when we first discussed his ill fitting shoes in Wanaka but at this stage in the journey I did not expect it.
We continued a short distance to where Ion and Conor were standing and Bruce spoke up. He wanted to turn back. It was taking me some time to process the information. What this meant for the rest of us was still undecided. Bruce was happy to have come this far and I must admit the view even from this point was pretty amazing with the cloud filled valleys, mountain peaks all around us and the sunrise colours filling the sky. If it ended here it was still pretty amazing.
Bruce had had a big year leading up to this for various reasons and as a result felt that he wasn't fit enough or in the right head space to attack the next stage and wanted to give us the best possible chance to summit. He wanted to bring it up here before we started ascending the ramp and became that extra level committed.
A discussion ensued between the four of us and while I was't entirely happy with the situation I had to support the decision. Going up further on the mountain with thoughts of turning back was not a good place to be. The problem was that if he turned back he still had a long distance back to the hut navigating numerous crevasses...and they were only the ones we could see. The only positive for the walk back was that our tracks from the hike up were still visible.
I felt torn. The walk back alone for Bruce was not ideal and I resigned myself to going back with him for safety reasons. This would mean Ion and Conor could continue their ascent. But Bruce didn't want that. From further conversation I could see that he didn't want this to bring an end to my attempt at the summit. But his safety was still my concern.
In this stunning place on the edge of a mountain in the middle of this vast and inspiring panorama decisions were made.
Whenever Poeka comes in, she is chased by a very enthusiastic Billy. The fact that she runs from him and hisses and growls at him hardly impresses him. With Pip he behaves a lot quieter. Here he is sitting on the doormat looking up at Poeka who has sought refuge on the window sill where Billy can't reach her ...... yet.
