Check the comments below for a closeup of the pigeonhole!

Today's photo is about expectations - the world and the people in it all carry their own expectations and it's only natural they're going to impart their expectations on us. That can be both a good and a bad thing. I guess the choice is up to us - we can let expectations feel like pressure and let them get us down. We can let them pigeon-hole us so we never do anything for ourselves, and spend our whole lives doing what we think others want us to do. Or we can choose to view expectations as motivation, fuel to get those rockets going and to help us go on to bigger and better things! We can even entirely disregard expectations and let out a giant, "F*** you!" to the world

Now, the long version: Yesterday's photo didn't seem to impress many people (for example: www.flickr.com/photos/amwbonfire/10305689616/ ) I could defend the photo and say "Well actually, last night's photo was an easy/quick one (even though it's still 2 bodies Photoshopped together) because I wanted to have my first full 8hrs of sleep since starting this 365." But I'm actually really really glad for the comments - they got me to take a step back and look at the bigger picture. It got me thinking; do people (in general) try too hard to impress others? One of the biggest regrets of the dying is, "I tried too hard to impress/please everybody".

Allow me to deviate for a second: Aaron Nace (phlearn.com/), who gives away hundreds/thousands of free photography/Photoshop tutorials, received a fair few complaints after one video where he swore once or twice. People jumped on him and told him what he should be doing (based, obviously, on their own expectations of who he was/what he should be). Despite the fact he's giving away quite advanced and awesome information for free.

Even though I've been doing this 365 entirely for myself (to challenge myself and see if I can actually do it, and to improve my photography/Photoshop skills more rapidly than if I just did a photo every now and then). But obviously people are going to have expectations about what I should be doing and how hard I should be working on each photo (even though it's my photo done for myself in my free time and 99% of the time taking up my sleep time).

I don't think people expressing their expectations is a bad thing though (we all do it!) Hell, if anything I'm flattered; the fact somebody HAS expectations of my photos means they obviously like them (or they'd have nothing to be disappointed about if I give them one they don't like).

So I really hope I'm making it obvious that I'm glad for the comments; I'm *honoured* somebody cared enough to be honest about what they do/don't like.

So what point am I making in this ramble? I guess it's strengthened my resolve to do photos for myself, and not for other people. It is, after all, my *hobby* - something I do purely because I really really enjoy it. On the flipside, it's also made me appreciative of people who DO take the time to comment (whether positive or negative) - I do genuinely welcome the discussion. Art/photography is so subjective and it's really interesting to learn what people love and hate - keeps things interesting! Best of all, yesterday's comments pushed me to do today's photo! :D

"I'm not going to tell the story the way it happened. I'm going to tell it the way I remember it".

We often allowed ourselves to exhibit psychological overcompensation. I think it's a problem.

So this is the end of the umbrella week. Did you like it? I will go shooting again on sunday and maybe this will lead to another series of whatever next week.

Lets see but say goodbye to the umbrella first. Maybe it'll come back.

Like a little feather that floats in the air we all have dreams and expectations for the year ahead. For me,one of the best would be(like i mentioned a couple shots before) for my son David to have a great time and be inspired in March when we travel to London for his trials at West Ham United.Football(soccer)is a big thing in his life and this is just a great opportunity.Personally my goals are to keep healthy and in terms of photography i will be posting a lot more variety...planning on doing wildlife,landscape,etc..Another thing that i really need to learn is Photoshop to unleash my creativity :)Just upgraded to Photoshop Elements 12 from version 8!!!!My knowledge of photoshop is so limited and i want 2014 to be the year where i finally learn to use this powerful tool...i want to have a bit of fun with it :)

What about you my friends...do you have a goal for 2014?Hope your dreams come true...all the best :)

Great Expectations (Team Canada) was the winning sculpture from the 2012 International Snow Sculpture Championships in Breckenridge Colorado. It's a sculpture of an ice fisherman sitting in front of his hut. The sculpture to the right is Correfoc (Team Catalonia-Spain). I really like the colored led lights they added to the show last year.

Whenever Poeka comes in, she is chased by a very enthusiastic Billy. The fact that she runs from him and hisses and growls at him hardly impresses him. With Pip he behaves a lot quieter. Here he is sitting on the doormat looking up at Poeka who has sought refuge on the window sill where Billy can't reach her ...... yet.

I can't remember exactly the sequence of events but with some distance between the two parties, Bruce approached me. Looking back, I could see there were signs from when we first discussed his ill fitting shoes in Wanaka but at this stage in the journey I did not expect it.

We continued a short distance to where Ion and Conor were standing and Bruce spoke up. He wanted to turn back. It was taking me some time to process the information. What this meant for the rest of us was still undecided. Bruce was happy to have come this far and I must admit the view even from this point was pretty amazing with the cloud filled valleys, mountain peaks all around us and the sunrise colours filling the sky. If it ended here it was still pretty amazing.

Bruce had had a big year leading up to this for various reasons and as a result felt that he wasn't fit enough or in the right head space to attack the next stage and wanted to give us the best possible chance to summit. He wanted to bring it up here before we started ascending the ramp and became that extra level committed.

A discussion ensued between the four of us and while I was't entirely happy with the situation I had to support the decision. Going up further on the mountain with thoughts of turning back was not a good place to be. The problem was that if he turned back he still had a long distance back to the hut navigating numerous crevasses...and they were only the ones we could see. The only positive for the walk back was that our tracks from the hike up were still visible.

I felt torn. The walk back alone for Bruce was not ideal and I resigned myself to going back with him for safety reasons. This would mean Ion and Conor could continue their ascent. But Bruce didn't want that. From further conversation I could see that he didn't want this to bring an end to my attempt at the summit. But his safety was still my concern.

In this stunning place on the edge of a mountain in the middle of this vast and inspiring panorama decisions were made.

This young ram was licking the salt along the roadside at Blue Mesa Lake earlier this week. He looks to be about 3 years old and if his dad was the ram that I hope it was, this young man has the chances of being a car stopper. In the meantime I hope he stays out of the road and safe.

We saw plenty of Rocky Mountain Bighorns on this day, but this young man was the only one that really cooperated for a portrait!

Hope you enjoy this shot and Happy New Year to all of my great friends on Flickr!

I like to think here I am waiting for my kaffeeklatsch lady friends to arrive, when we will discuss important subjects like the high price of ground beef, worthless husbands, lazy children, adorable grandkids, the newest fashions, will hemlines go up or down this coming season, and how to get our colored things brighter than bright.

And, of course some fresh coffee and crumbcake, or perhaps an orignal Racine kringle.

Just my Lucy and Dior.

Maybe I have their attention ?

I'm not sure about this, the title is kind of funny... AND I'm so sick of my face haha but whatevs, whatevs.

In other news, I am leaving the city this wednesday for a school social work. Also, I'm having a BIG exam this monday. I'm kind of nervous and excited... but mostly nervous. I'm crossing fingers, seriously.

I wish you all a great weekend!
