Tissington Village - Derbyshire Dales. Feb 2024
A perfect picture book village with beautiful cottages built around a noble old hall, fine church and duck pond. Home of the FitzHerbert family for over 400 years and it is their splendid Jacobean residence at the Hall. There is no pub in the village. Tissington is known to be one of the prettiest villages in the Peak District. The population "Tissington and Lea Hall" at the 2011 census was 159.
The Tissington Trail for walkers, cyclists and horse riders passes by the village, where there is parking and a picnic site. The Limestone Way footpath goes through Tissington and there are good routes all around for ramblers. The trail is 13 miles in total and should take an average walker 2.5 hours with stops along the way.

The Grade II listed rather photogenic Gwennap United Stamps Engine House was constructed in 1899 30 years after the closure of United Mines. It was erected to house a 34 inch stamps engine for the reworking of the mine dumps as Gwennap United

United Mines was formed by the amalgamation of Ale and Cakes Mine, Wheal Cupboard, and Poldory around 1780. Located just south of the Great Consolidated Mines in the parish of Gwennap, they border the villages of St. Day and Crofthandy to the west and the Poldice and Carnon valleys to the north. Later, the group expanded to include Wheal Britannia, Wheal Clifford, Wheal Moor, Wheal Squire, Wheal Andrew (also known as Friendship Mines), and Copper Hill Mine.
Little is known of the history of the individual mines of the United Mines group. Poldory was probably active in 1760. It appears to have commenced production as a small scale tin mine and then been combined with other small-scale mines in the area in 1815 under the name of United Mines.
In the early 1820s, John Taylor obtained the lease for abandoned mines in the Gwennap parish. He initially reworked their setts and eventually discovered the world's richest copper lode at that time. By 1822, the Gwennap Mines were already profitable.
At that time, the primary production in the area was copper, with some tin and ochre also being extracted. The materials were transported north to the port of Portreath for smelting in South Wales via the Portreath Tramroad. As the mines grew more profitable, the tramroad owners increased the trans-shipping fees. In response, John Taylor built his own tramway southward through the Carnon Valley to Devoran on the south coast. The Redruth and Chasewater mineral tramway, initially horse-drawn, opened in 1824 and later switched to steam power mid-nineteenth century. The railway was operational for over 90 years, eventually closing in 1915.
Eldon's pumping engine house, also referred to as Little's, housed a 30-inch cylinder pumping engine and dates back to around the 1830s. Its primary function was to pump water from the adit to the surface.
United Mines continued to expand and eventually merged with the adjacent Consolidated Mines in 1857, forming 'Clifford Amalgamated Mines'. At its zenith, these mines boasted 80 miles of subterranean workings and 22 engines. By 1861, the entire group was incorporated into Great Consolidated as Clifford Amalgamated Mines. From 1835 to 1861, Wheal Clifford extracted 50,167 tons of copper ore at 6.5% purity and 365 tons of black tin. During the same period, the other mines in the United Downs group yielded 347,500 tons of copper ore at 7.5% purity, 250 tons of black tin, 158 tons of arsenic, 1,290 tons of pyrite, and 271 tons of zinc ore.
Declining metal prices ultimately led to the closure of mines around 1870.
From 1899 into the early 20th century the mine dumps were reworked and engines installed for puping water for ore processing as well as for powering stamps.
The area was prospected again in the 1940’s and brief trial mining operations were conducted but no commercial mining took place.

Expanding on the "Taos Air" service that they started in 2020, Advanced Air is also offering seasonal flights to Carlsbad from Mammoth Lakes (MMH) this year. Amsterdam's name derives from Amstelredamme, indicative of the city's origin around a dam in the river Amstel. In the 19th and 20th centuries, the city expanded, and many new neighbourhoods and suburbs were planned and built. The Amsterdam Stock Exchange is the oldest stock exchange in the world. I see this hawk quite frequently on my walks with the dog. In doing some research I read that Hawks are spiritual messengers symbolizing freedom, representing great vision and decisiveness. Seeing hawks all the time means you are getting a flow of ideas like a hawk does while it is flying on the wind. A hawk sighting symbolizes a creative being and means that the time has come to spread your wings, to fly higher, and to expand your vision!
A good omen for the New Year!
Charlottenlund Palace (Danish: Charlottenlund Slot) has been expanded with several extensions since 1865 when Ferdinand Richardt made a drawing of it (see the previous photo in the photostream).
The palace is a former royal summer residence and was named after Princess Charlotte Amalie. She was given the first house on the estate and had it replaced with the original palace.
In 1869, Crown Prince Frederick and his wife Lovisa of Sweden took over the palace. Both Christian X of Denmark and Haakon VII of Norway were born in the building. In 1880-81, Ferdinand Meldahl undertook a major rebuilding of the palace. One extension was made on each gable. The central hall with the dome and lantern were also added.
The royal family discontinued using the palace in 1935 and made it available to the Danish Biological Station. The Great Hall is occasionally used for classical concerts.

Walking to pick up our car from its service took us through a village not far from where we live and one I thought I knew quite well. Clearly I don't know it as well as I thought, as I've never seen this old water pump in the heart of the village before.

Kamianets-Podilskyi was first mentioned in 1062 as a town of the Kievan Rus' state. In 1241, it was destroyed by the Mongol Tatar invaders. In 1352, it was annexed by the Polish King Casimir III, and became the capital of Podole Voivodship and the seat of local civil and military administration. The ancient castle was reconstructed and substantially expanded by the Polish kings to defend Poland from the southwest against Ottoman and Tatar invasions. After the Treaty of Buczacz of 1672, it was briefly part of the Ottoman Empire and capital of Podolya eyalet. To counter the Turkish threat to the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, King Jan III Sobieski built a fortress nearby, Okopy Świętej Trójcy ("the Entrenchments of the Holy Trinity"). In 1699, the city was given back to Poland under King Augustus II the Strong according to the Treaty of Karlowitz. The fortress was continually enlarged and was regarded as the strongest in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. The preserved ruins of the fortress still contain the iron cannon balls stuck in them from various sieges. After the Second Partition of Poland in 1793, the city belonged to the Russian Empire, where it was the capital of Podolia Governorate. The Russian Tsar Peter the Great, who visited the fortress twice, was impressed by its fortifications.
One of the towers was used as a prison cell for Ustym Karmeliuk, a prominent peasant rebel leader of the early 19th century), who managed to escape from it three times.
This blossom tree sits tucked under the cliff and is always quite late to bloom, a wise tree in this part of the world
