The Impressionists were Redon's contemporaries, though he shared little of their interest in naturalism. However, later in his career colour became significant for him, especially in numerous works dominated by flower motifs. The artist capitalized by flower motifs. The artist capitalized on the power of colour to be suggestive and not descriptive. In Exotic Flowers, colour carries the movement and rhythm of the composition, providing the emotional tenor.
