Women's cycling clothing underwent significant changes in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, driven by the desire for practicality and freedom of movement. By 1910, the Rational Dress Movement had gained considerable traction, advocating for clothing that was both comfortable and suitable for physical activities like cycling. This movement challenged traditional Victorian fashions, which were often cumbersome and restrictive.
During the cycling craze of the 1890s, women began adopting more practical attire, including bloomers and knickerbockers, which were initially met with ridicule and resistance. However, as cycling grew in popularity, these garments became more accepted and evolved into various styles such as tailored tweed knickerbockers suits, bloomers designed to be concealed under skirts, and bifurcated skirts. These innovations were crucial in allowing women to participate more freely in cycling and other outdoor activities.
By 1910, the influence of the Rational Dress Movement was evident in women's cycling attire. Clothing designed specifically for cycling emphasized functionality and comfort, reflecting a shift towards more practical and liberating fashions.
Lady Florence Harberton, a key figure in the Rational Dress Movement, advocated for exercise and mobility for women, promoting the adoption of practical clothing. Her efforts contributed significantly to the acceptance of cycling as a legitimate activity for women and the development of appropriate attire.
The transition to rational dress was not without controversy. Women who chose to wear cycling-specific clothing often faced public scrutiny and ridicule. However, the persistence of women cyclists and the support of organizations like the Cyclists' Touring Club helped to legitimize these changes and pave the way for greater freedom and equality in women's fashion and activities.
Despite the progress made by the Rational Dress Movement, fully embracing practical cycling attire remained a challenge. Even into the early 20th century, women continued to face societal pressures regarding appropriate dress, and the complete normalization of cycling-specific clothing was gradual.

MEDITERRANEAN SEA -- During NATO-Exercise Trident Juncture 2015, eighteen ships from six different Task Groups are participating in a manoeuvring exercise while two shipborne helicopters are covering the scene. While the ships are sailing in different formations, a camera operator and a photographer on board a "Sea Lynx" helicopter of SNMG2 flagship German frigate HAMBURG are taking footage and photos of the event (October 29, 2015). The units of Standing NATO Maritime Group 2 (SNMG2) are sailing in the Mediterranean Sea, inter alia, participating in multinational exercises and Operation ACTIVE ENDEAVOUR, showing presence of the Alliance and conducting routine port visits in NATO and Non-NATO countries.

United Launch Alliance (ULA) engineers and technicians completed a successful pathfinder exercise to assess procedures and operations in Cape Canaveral, Florida, in preparation for the first Vulcan Centaur launch.
The pathfinder used a mass simulator built specifically to mimic the mass of Vulcan Centaur's core stage, as well as an outer diameter of 17.7 feet. The simulator was transported from the Port Canaveral wharf, where the R/S RocketShip will deliver Vulcan Centaur rockets, to ULA facilities for processing.
The highlight of the rehearsal was hoisting the simulator at the Vertical Integration Facility (VIF) to verify the tools and techniques that will be employed next year for the next-generation rocket's maiden launch campaign.

I mean, it's exercise for the Rabbit, but also for me.
I've been trying to get reliable autofocus action shots with the Sony NEX-5N, and that's not its best feature. Indeed it's not the strong suit of any mirrorless camera produced to date, though that's likely to change over the next few years. Hardware solutions are at hand (Nikon System 1). There's even an in-cam software (and hence much cheaper) solution in sight.
You can still do this kind of photography more easily with a very basic DSLR (such as a six-year-old Nikon D40 which handles this situation effortlessly). I finally broke down and tried the NEX-5N's built-in sports action scene mode, and it works better than any of the more photographerly tricks I had tried previously.
That was a bit of a DOH! moment after six months of trying to make this work.
Multi-exposure motion sequences are a steady byproduct of these experiments, so I've been practicing multi-exposure stacking as well. You can see the splice lines in the image above if you look closely. Those can be obscured completely with additional layer work in postprocessing.
No set of Central Park photos would be complete without some tribute to its status as a haven for New Yorkers in search of healthy exercise.
2015 update - this photo is wildly popular (around 40 views/day) for reasons I can't quite figure out. Ironically in the years since I took this, I first became a runner, and then a frequent race photographer.

On the 31st July 2015 Exercise INDRADHANUSH came to an end at RAF Brize Norton and RAF Coningsby.
During the two week exercise four Sukhoi Su-30MKI Flanker fighters from Number 2 Squadron Indian Air Force deployed from Northeast India to RAF Coningsby to train with Typhoon FGR4 equipped Number 3(Fighter) Squadron.
The exercise provides a rare opportunity for RAF pilots to test themselves against the fourth generation Russian built fighter.
Accompanying the Sukhoi Su-30 fighters was an Ilyushin Il78 tanker, a Boeing C-17 Globemaster and a Lockheed Martin C-130J Hercules aircraftm which operated from RAF Brize Norton.
The image shows the IL78 being prepared for engine start before taxying and taking off.

Military members from 7 countries (Guyana, the U.S., Dominican Republic, Mexico, Belize, Saint Lucia, Trinidad and Tobago) fast-rope from a UH-60 Black Hawk helicopter to simulate a safe and effective method of inserting and removing personnel to and from specific locations where it would be difficult or impossible to land an aircraft safely.
