No set of Central Park photos would be complete without some tribute to its status as a haven for New Yorkers in search of healthy exercise.

2015 update - this photo is wildly popular (around 40 views/day) for reasons I can't quite figure out. Ironically in the years since I took this, I first became a runner, and then a frequent race photographer.

Exercise and physical activity are good for just about everyone, including older adults. There are four main types and each type is different. Doing them all will give you more benefits.

- Endurance, or aerobic, activities increase your breathing and heart rate. Brisk walking or jogging, dancing, swimming, and biking are examples.

- Strength exercises make your muscles stronger. Lifting weights or using a resistance band can build strength.

- Balance exercises help prevent falls

- Flexibility exercises stretch your muscles and can help your body stay limber

There’s no doubt that exercise is one of the best things in the world you can do for your health.

Exercise improves mood—in some studies as well as antidepressants—and it’s great for your heart. Recent research shows that it even helps you grow new brain cells.

These photos are from our third day of plane spotting at the 23-1 Red Flag Exercise at Nellis Air Fore Base. After a lovely morning at Red Rock Canyon we got to Nellis around 1330, just as the B-52 was taxiing for take off. Excellent timing. Good weather, still windy, and most planes were doing the Flex West departure - very nice. About an hour after the wave of takeoffs subsided, we went to Cheyenne Avenue to catch the afternoon recoveries. This was one of our best days there ever. Seemed like nonstop action for over an hour. The lighting conditions were awesome - good late afternoon sun right before sunset - especially when the AWACS finished the days activities. Wow!

Oakland, CA | 2019

This selfie was taken in one of the gyms on OSU's campus. Because I live in Park-Stradley hall, which is on South campus, I often go to Jesse Owens South (where this photo is taken). In the image, I am running on one of the elliptical machines. In order to distract myself while running, I either watch my show, Suits, on Prime Video, or listen to my "Workout" Spotify playlist. All last year, I only worked out a few times. However, this year my roommate and I decided that we would encourage each other to go to the gym every other day. Since working out, I now feel that I fit in better with the principles held in high esteem by my family. Since my brothers have always played sports, exercise has always been very important to them.

This selfie has made me change the way that I see myself because it has made me proud of spending my time somewhere that people go to better themselves by improving their physical fitness. This is important to my identity because it has to do with the influence of health. I decided to start working out because I wanted to get into better shape and improve my well-being.

After many attempts to crop this photo, I hit on this solution. I think it turns a mediocre picture into something special. I'm terribly pleased with myself for thinking of it.

The man is practicing some form of exercise that I only saw in Hanoi. It's a routine with both slow stretching and fast, loose movements.

MEDITERRANEAN SEA -- During NATO-Exercise Trident Juncture 2015, eighteen ships from six different Task Groups are participating in a manoeuvring exercise while two shipborne helicopters are covering the scene. While the ships are sailing in different formations, a camera operator and a photographer on board a "Sea Lynx" helicopter of SNMG2 flagship German frigate HAMBURG are taking footage and photos of the event (October 29, 2015). What did I learn? How to lay down a glaze over a wash without disturbing the color underneath. By glazing, you can get by with less colors. Glazing gives color depth. Working with values improves a painting. Refreshed color mixtures.
