Looking east past one of two 17c parish chests to the north chapel built as a chantry by Philip Copleston and his brother Walter c 1460 in memory of their father John who died in 1458, and lived at Coplestone House in this parish, which was the family residence for several centuries.

They most probably were executors of their father’s will and did this at his posthumous request. In his will of 18th October 1858 John Coplestone had requested burial in St. Katherine’s aisle here next to his wife Elizabeth, who had died the previous year. The well-worn ledger stone can still be viewed in the aisle. www.flickr.com/gp/52219527@N00/wc5x79SM8Z

By the latter half of the 16c the chapel became the Coplestone family pew and for their comfort a fireplace (now boarded up) was installed, the original stone chimney still remains on the outer walls.

The most striking features are the beautiful screen and the ancient prie-dieu known as the Copleston desk carved in 1472 for the marriage of Philip Coplestone and Anne Bonville, an heiress from her maternal grandmother Leva Gorges , this marriage greatly boosting the Coplestone coffers, and which has the Copleston & Gorges coats of arms. The desk is now used at the entrance to the chancel by the vicar. www.flickr.com/gp/52219527@N00/o4gY3V44qo

Documentary references to the Copleston family go back as far as 1275, but there is ample evidence to show that the family was here long before. Three generations previously held the same lands under the name of St Vedest , before they too the name Copleston from the property they lived in where stands the ancient Copleston Cross mentioned in a Saxon charter of 974 AD

The Jacobean Communion Table, once the chancel altar, was made by Leonard Reeve at a cost of 19s in 1640.

"In 1998, director Barbara Dawson secured the donation of Francis Bacon's studio from the artist's heir John Edwards and Brian Clarke executor of the Estate of Francis Bacon. In the August of that year, the Hugh Lane team removed the studio and it's entire contents from London to Dublin. The team, led by conservator Mary McGrath, comprised archaeologists who made the survey and elevation drawings of the small studio, mapping out the spaces and locations of the objects and conservators and curators who tagged and packed each of the items, including the dust. The walls, doors floor and ceiling were also removed. The relocated studio opened to the public in 2001. Over 7,000 items were found and these were catalogued on a specially designed database." www.hughlane.ie/history-of-studio-relocation

Richard Foxe (sometimes Richard Fox) (c. 1448–5 October 1528) was an English churchman, successively Bishop of Exeter, Bath and Wells, Durham, and Winchester, Lord Privy Seal, and founder of Corpus Christi College, Oxford.

He was born at Ropsley near Grantham, Lincolnshire. His parents belonged to the yeoman class, and little is known about Foxe's early career. He is thought to have gone to Magdalen College, Oxford, from which he drew many members of his subsequent foundation, Corpus Christi. He also appears to have studied at Cambridge University, but nothing definite is known of his first thirty-five years.[1]

In 1484, he was in Paris possibly for the sake of learning or because he had made himself unpopular with Richard III. There he came into contact with Henry Tudor, who was beginning his quest for the English throne, and was taken into his service. In January of 1485 Richard intervened to prevent Foxe's appointment to the vicarage of Stepney on the ground that he was keeping company with the "great rebel, Henry ap Tuddor."

The important offices conferred on Foxe immediately after the Battle of Bosworth imply that he had already seen more extensive political service than can be traced in records. Doubtless Henry had every reason to reward his companions in exile, and to rule like Ferdinand of Aragon by means of lawyers and churchmen rather than trust nobles like those who had made the Wars of the Roses. But without an intimate knowledge of Foxe's political experience and capacity he would hardly have made him his principal secretary, and soon afterwards Lord Privy Seal[2] and elected Bishop of Exeter on 29 January 1487, being consecrated on 8 April.[3] The ecclesiastical role provided a salary that was not at Henry's expense; for Foxe never saw either Exeter or the diocese of Bath and Wells to which he was moved in February of 1492.[4] His activity was confined to political and especially diplomatic channels; during John Morton's lifetime, Foxe was his subordinate, but after the archbishop's death he was first in Henry's confidence, and had an important share in all the diplomatic work of the reign. In 1487 he negotiated a treaty with King James III of Scotland, and in 1491 he baptized the future King Henry VIII of England. In 1492 he helped conclude the Peace of Etaples, and in 1493 he was chief commissioner in the negotiations for the famous commercial agreement with the Netherlands which Bacon seems to have been the first to call the Magnus Intercursus.

Meanwhile in July of 1494 Foxe had been translated to the see of Durham,[5] not merely because it was a richer see than Bath and Wells but because of its political importance as a palatine earldom and its position with regard to the Borders and relations with Scotland. For these reasons rather than from any ecclesiastical scruples Foxe visited and resided in his new diocese; and he occupied Norham Castle, which he fortified and defended against a Scottish raid in Perkin Warbeck's interests in 1497. But his energies were principally devoted to pacific purposes. In that same year he negotiated Perkin's retirement from the court of James IV, and in 1498–1499 he completed the negotiations for that treaty of marriage between the Scottish king and Henry's daughter Margaret which led ultimately to the union of the two crowns in 1603 and of the two kingdoms in 1707. The marriage itself did not take place until 1503, just a century before the accession of James I.

This consummated Foxe's work in the north, and in August of 1501 he was once more translated to the see of Winchester,[6] then reputed the richest bishopric in England. In that year he brought to a conclusion marriage negotiations not less momentous in their ultimate results, when Prince Arthur was betrothed to Catherine of Aragon. His last diplomatic achievement in the reign of Henry VII was the betrothal of the king's younger daughter Mary to the future emperor Charles V.

In 1500 he was elected chancellor of Cambridge University, an office not confined to noble lords until a much more democratic age, and in 1507 master of Pembroke Hall, Cambridge. The Lady Margaret Beaufort made him one of her executors, and in this capacity as well as in that of chancellor, he had the chief share with Fisher in regulating the foundation of St John's College, Cambridge, and the Lady Margaret professorships and readerships. His financial work brought him a less enviable notoriety, though history has deprived him of the credit which is his due for "Morton's Fork." The invention of that ingenious dilemma for extorting contributions from poor and rich alike is ascribed as a tradition to Morton by Francis Bacon; but the story is told in greater detail of Foxe by Erasmus, who says he had it from Sir Thomas More. It is in keeping with the somewhat malicious saying about Foxe, reported by William Tyndale, that he would sacrifice his father to save his king, which is not so damning as Wolsey's dying words.

The accession of Henry VIII only increased Foxe's power, the personnel of his ministry remaining unaltered. The Venetian ambassador called Foxe "alter rex" and the Spanish ambassador Carroz said that Henry trusted him more than any other adviser, although he also reports Henry's warning that the Bishop of Winchester was, as his name implied, "a Foxe indeed." He was the chief of the ecclesiastical statesmen of Morton's school, believed in frequent parliaments, and opposed the spirited foreign policy which laymen like Surrey are supposed to have advocated. His colleagues were William Warham and Ruthal, but Warham and Foxe differed on the question of Henry's marriage, Foxe advising the completion of the match with Catherine of Aragon while Warham expressed doubts as to its canonical validity. They also differed over the prerogatives of Canterbury with regard to probate and other questions of ecclesiastical jurisdiction.

Thomas Wolsey's rapid rise in 1511 put an end to Foxe's influence. The pacific policy of the first two years of Henry VIII's reign was succeeded by an adventurous foreign policy directed mainly against France; and Foxe complained that no one dared do anything in opposition to Wolsey's wishes. Foxe resigned the privy seal because of Wolsey's ill-advised attempt to drive King Francis I of France out of Milan by financing an expedition led by Maximilian I, Holy Roman Emperor, in 1516. Cuthbert Tunstall protested, Wolsey took Warham's place as chancellor, and Foxe was succeeded by Ruthal, who, said the Venetian ambassador, "sang treble to Wolsey's bass." Yet he warmly congratulated Wolsey two years later when warlike adventures were abandoned at the peace of London. But in 1522, when war was again declared, he emphatically refused to bear any part of the responsibility, and in 1523 he opposed in convocation the financial demands which met with a more strenuous resistance in the House of Commons.

He now devoted himself to his long-neglected episcopal duties. He expressed himself as being as anxious for the reformation of the clergy as Simeon for the coming of the Messiah; but was too old to accomplish much himself in the way of remedying the clerical and especially the monastic depravity, licence and corruption he deplored. His sight failed during the last ten years of his life, and Matthew Parker claimed that Wolsey suggested his retirement from his bishopric on a pension. Foxe refused, and Wolsey had to wait until Foxe's death before he could add Winchester to his archbishopric of York and his abbey of St Albans, and thus leave Durham vacant as he hoped for his own illegitimate son. Foxe died on 5 October 1528.[6]

The crown of Foxe's career was his foundation of Corpus Christi College, Oxford, which he established in 1515–1516. Originally he intended it as an Oxford house for the monks of St Swithin's, Winchester; but he is said to have been dissuaded by Bishop Oldham, who foretold the fall of the monks. The scheme breathed the spirit of the Renaissance; provision was made for the teaching of Greek, Erasmus praised the institution and Pole was one of its earliest fellows. The humanist Juan Luís Vives was brought from Italy to teach Latin, and the reader in theology was instructed to follow the Greek and Latin Fathers rather than the scholastic commentaries. Foxe also built and endowed schools at Taunton and Grantham - The King's School, Grantham remains one of England's leading educational institutions - and was a benefactor to numerous other institutions. He died at Wolvesey; Corpus possesses several portraits and other relics of its founder.

"Greetings to those who look upon these stones. This monument is raised to Thomas Fryer, Doctor of Medicine, the second Aesculapius, most well-de serving father of Henry Fryer Esquire and also to Mary the most devoted wife of Thomas and mother of Henry. The first of these (Thomas) died on 9 May 1623 aged 86. She however on 11 May 1614 aged 57 both yielding up to heaven what was of heaven, returning to earth what was of earth" This monument of memory is raysed by ye executors of Henry Fryer Esquire second sonne of the sayd Thomas Fryer doctor in physique who dyed ye 5 of June 1631 & is here interred leaving his deare wife Bridget to lament his losse & his large almes to ye poore to commend his faith incloistered in these piles of stone the reliques of the Fryer rest whose better part to heaven's gone. The poore man's bowels were his chest and 'mongst these 3, grave, heaven, poore he shared his corps, his sould his store"

Dr Thomas Fryer d1623 in doctors robes with wife Mary d1613 and favoured second son Henry dsp 1631 a lawyer who died after a fall from his horse, kneel above Henry's widow Bridget. flic.kr/p/9S3E12 Catholics themselves, Thomas bought the manor from the catholic Barnes family

Thomas Fryer’s will, dated 9 November 1617, explicitly disinherits his eldest son, John, who had followed in both the family profession and the family religion, in favour of a younger son, Henry, a lawyer: - ‘I do give and bequeath to my eldest son John Frier, Doctor in Physick, the somme of fifty poundes of lawefull money of Englande although I must in confidence … confirme and protest and denounce openly and dolorous to all the worlde manifest thorough his many great impieties to his parents and especially towarde his tender carefull and mercifull mother, and other horrible immoralities and enormities, towarde his second brother Henry and other detestable misdemaynor towarde his sister Susan too horrible and shamefull to repeat, he hath not deserved to have one penny nor to be accounted my son, considering the care I took to bring him up to learning with no smale charge …’

The denunciation occupies almost half of Thomas Fryer’s two-page will. John’s offence is made more specific in a letter from a secretary of the then Archbishop of Canterbury, George Abbot: =. ‘I can write you no news from Croydon, save only that Dr. Friar since the death of his wife goeth about to disinherit the young doctor his son, at the instigation of a younger son, and a daughter Susan, who both charge him with his Paduan Italian lechery towards themselves. My Lord Archbishop had the hearing of the matter. …"

Henry died without issue in 1631 having devised the manor to charitable uses subject to certain bequests, and John Fryer instituted proceedings against his executors. Henry's executors continued to hold the manor in 1634, and in 1635 Henry's widow Bridget obtained her dower, including the manor-house. In 1638 on the king's order John obtained the manor subject to Henry's specific bequests, although disputes over the will continued. By his will proved in 1672 John settled the manor on his nephews John Peacock and Andrew Mathew , sons of his sister Elizabeth Peacock of Petersfield, Andrew Mathew took possession. In pursuance of a decree of the Commissioners for Charitable Uses in 1675, and another of Chancery in 1676, the manor was conveyed to Christ's Hospital in 1677 subject to Henry Fryer's specific bequests and Bridget's dower. The choice of Christ's Hospital was the king's, acting on advice about his powers, and he directed that the endowment should be for his new foundation there for teaching mathematics and navigation. Bridget Fryer leased her dower to Christ's Hospital in 1677 and died in 1684. , After John Fryer’s death the Court of Chancery decreed that the whole of the estates should be vested in the governors of Christ’s Hospital, subject to the payment of specific sums mentioned in Henry Fryer’s will. Fryer’s Charity still exists, its funds now being devoted to educational purposes.

The theme idea for the colors came from an executor skin. I am horrible with coming up with good color matches, so I had red, but got tired of it and switched to black on gray (less contrast that way).

While reading the executor forum, I saw a post where someone had their classic windows arranged the same way (only the colors weren't weird like I had it before), so I decided to try this out again.

Unfortunately, executor took a long time to index my documents, way more time than launchy did, so I went back to launchy, which is displayed.

The picture doesn't get in the way because it becomes transparent on mouseover and is clickthrough. If I want to change the picture, I push alt or ctrl and right click, and if I want to delete anything from my desktop notes, alt/ctrl leftclick the pic.

Since I had rainmeter running also, i got rid of TitlebarClock and used rainmeter + always on top instead.

Thomas Nash (baptised 20 June 1593 – died 4 April 1647)[1] was the first husband of William Shakespeare's granddaughter Elizabeth Barnard. He lived most of his life in Stratford-upon-Avon, and was the dominant male figure amongst Shakespeare's senior family line after the death of Dr. John Hall, Shakespeare's son-in-law, in 1635.

Nash was baptised at the parish church of the Holy Trinity in Stratford-upon-Avon and entered in the register as “Thomas filius Anthonij Nash generosi”, i.e. “Thomas, son of Anthony Nash gentleman”. His mother's maiden name was Mary Baugh and she came from Twyning, near Tewkesbury in Gloucestershire.[3] His father Anthony, a friend of Shakespeare and farmer of his tithes, was born in Old Stratford.

Nash entered Lincoln's Inn, one of the four Inns of Court in London, on 15 May 1616 at the at the age of 13, and was called to the bar on 25 November 1623, but there's no evidence that he ever went on to practice law.[4] The Oxford Dictionary of National Biography says that he may however have taken over a rôle that his father held in being an agent for Sir John Hubaud, a High Sheriff of Warwickshire; but Sir John Hubaud died in 1583, ten years before Thomas was born.[4]

When Thomas's father died in 1622, he was bequeathed properties in Stratford: the Bear Inn (opposite the Swan) and a house in Bridge Street, and a piece of land called “the Butt Close by the Avon” where burghers used to shoot at archery butts.[5][6] Thomas was an executor to his father's will. It appears that Thomas held on to the Bear Inn: his father-in-law, Dr. John Hall, once treated someone that he called one of Thomas's servants “lying at the Bear”, presumably indicating that he was a publican or worker at that inn. Hall's first treatment for the poor heavily jaundiced servant elicited “seven Vomits”, and this and a series of further treatments “cured him perfectly”.[7]

Nash was part of the 1633 trimvirate, along with John Hall and the vicar of Harbury Richard Watts, that was to oversee the wranglings associated with Thomas Quiney and his lease on a house called The Cage.[8] Nash apparently lived in the house now known as Nash's House, before moving in with his mother-in-law next door at New Place after the death of Dr. Hall in 1635. Nash is known to have been a declared royalist, a supporter of Charles I and indeed a donor to the king's cause to the tune of £100,[9] which may have led to Queen Henrietta Maria and the king's entourage staying with Thomas and his family at New Place in July 1643.[10]

According to Charlotte Carmichael Stopes, Nash's coat of arms was emblazoned “double quarterly of four, First, 1 and 4 argent on a chevron between three ravens' heads erased azure, a pellet between 4 cross-crosslets sable, for Nash; 2 and 3 sable a buck's head caboshed argent attired or, between his horns a cross patée, and across his mouth an arrow, Bulstrode. Second, 1 and 4, for Hall, 2 and 3 Shakespeare”.

Nash married Elizabeth Hall, Shakespeare's granddaughter, on 22 April 1626 at Holy Trinity church in Stratford-upon-Avon. Thomas de Quincey conjectured that this date was chosen to celebrate the birthday of Elizabeth's famous grandfather, who was baptised on 26 April and whose birthday is celebrated out of tradition alone on 23 April. Being 32 years old at the time of the marriage, Nash was 14 years older than his 18 year old bride.[12] They had no children, and Elizabeth was the last direct descendent of Shakespeare.

Thomas Nash died in 1647, at the age of 53. In the will that he made on 20 August 1642 he bequeathed memorial rings (a common practice at the time) to Thomas and Judith Quiney, Shakespeare's son-in-law and daughter.[14] Less straightforwardly, he also bequeathed property that did not belong to him, for example leaving New Place, the property of his mother-in-law Susanna Hall, to his cousin Edward Nash.[14] Indeed, Nash even refers to Susanna in a letter as “Mrs. Hall, my mother-in-law, who lives with me”.[2] Susanna successfully retained the house, which Shakespeare had bought in 1597, after some legal wrangling.

Nash was buried in the chancel of Holy Trinity, immediately to the right of Shakespeare's as one faces the altar. To be accorded this honour required some kind of position recognised by the church as fitting, such as holding parish tithes. His burial inscription and epitaph reads:[15]

This pic is a few years old now but shows the rim-trench laid out for the front 3/4 of the Executor. This is at 'Studio-scale' so about 9.1ft total length. I'm reconsidering how she'll actually be built now as it needs to probably come apart for transportation.

State Street, Boerum Hill, Brooklyn

No 299 State Street was erected as part of a row of six houses (Nos, 289-299), by Michael Murray, a local builder who lived at 240 DeKalb Avenue. John C. Herman Frost (or Trost) purchased the house in 1876 from the executors of Murray's estate.

These handsome residences were part of the Boerum Hill Community which had formed the original Town of Breuckelen founded in 1646 by Dutch colonists. It was incorporated into the larger City of Brooklyn in 1834. The development of Boerum Hill as an urban community began in the 1840s and continued into the lS70s. Many of the houses which remain from this period incorporated Greek Revival and Italianate elements in the row house design. These houses were built for merchants and professional people, many of whom worked in the Wall Street area or in the vicinity of the Fulton Street ferry.

Murray, the builder, acquired the land for Nos. 289-295 in 1872, and the land for the pair, Nos. 297 and 299, in 1874 from William Schermerhorn. The Schermerhorns were one of Brooklyn's old, wealthy Dutch families; Peter Schermerhorn, William's father, was, with his brother Abraham, one of Brooklyn's largest landholders. Schermerhorn Street, one block north of State Street, was named after them.

The north side of State Street was largely undeveloped when Murray began erecting Nos. 289-295 in 1872,(No. 289 has been demolished). Nos, 291-299 are five, almost identical, brownstone houses built in a late version of the popular Italianate style. They have undergone only minor alterations in the past one hundred years and the row retains an integrity and a unity which enhance the entire block.

Its rusticated basement provides a solid visual base for the three-story brownstone front rising above it. Similar to the other houses In the row, the basement contains two segmental-arched windows with beveled keystones and iron grilles.

The doorway, like that on No. 297 is flanked by grooved pilasters terminating in grooved console brackets with foliate pendants, supporting a segmental-arched .pediment. A round arch with beveled spandrel panels and foliate keystone accentuates the doorway.

The doorway also contains wooden engaged colonnettes with Corinthian capitals. The double doors with glazed panels, like those on Nos. 295 and 297, have two panels at the top curved to complement the arch. Cornice slabs supported on brackets crown the full-height parlor windows, while the windows on the upper floors have lintels with cap moldings and sills supported on corbel blocks.

The roof cornice at No. 299 like that of No. 297, is ornate and more typically Italianate. It is supported on four heavy foliate brackets interspersed with modillions and dentils; panels enrich the frieze.

SUNDON, CHARLOTTE CLAYTON, Lady (d. 1742), woman of the bedchamber to Queen Caroline, was granddaughter of Sir Lewis Dyve [q. v.] of Bromham, Bedfordshire, and daughter of Sir Lewis's youngest son John, who married, in 1673, Frances, third daughter of Sir Robert Wolseley of Wolseley, Staffordshire. John Dyve was clerk of the privy council in 1691, and died in the following year; his widow died in 1702, and both were buried at St. James's, Westminster (W. M. Harvey, Hundred of Willey, pp. 44 seq.).

Before the end of Queen Anne's reign their daughter, Charlotte Dyve, married a Bedfordshire gentleman of family and fortune, William Clayton (1672?–1752) of Sundon Hall, afterwards Baron Sundon of Ardagh in the Irish peerage. He was M.P. for Liverpool from 1698 to 1707, and from 1713 to 1715. Afterwards he was M.P. for New Woodstock (1716–22) and St. Albans (1722–1727), by the influence of the Duke of Marlborough, and for Westminster (1727–41), Plympton Earl (1742–47), and St. Mawes (1747–52). In 1716 he was deputy auditor of the exchequer, and he became a lord of the treasury in 1718 (Gent. Mag. 1752, p. 240).

In 1713, when the Duke of Marlborough left England, Clayton, a confidential friend, was appointed one of the managers of the duke's estates, and afterwards he was an executor. On the accession of George I and the return of the whigs to office in 1714 Mrs. Clayton was appointed, through the influence of her friend and correspondent, the Duchess of Marlborough, bedchamber woman to Caroline of Anspach, now Princess of Wales. Lady Cowper, another lady of the bedchamber to the princess, was soon on terms of great intimacy, and sought to turn her influence to account in behalf of Mrs. Clayton's husband. Mrs. Clayton obtained much influence over her royal mistress (Diary of Mary, Countess Cowper, passim). Sir Robert Walpole, who was constantly in opposition to Mrs. Clayton, said that her ascendency over the Princess of Wales was due to her knowledge of the secret that her mistress suffered from a rupture; but the falsity of the story is shown by the fact that there were no symptoms of the trouble until 1724, when Mrs. Clayton had been in the princess's favour for ten years (Lord Hervey, Memoirs of the Reign of George II, i. 90, iii. 310). According to Walpole she accepted from her friend, the Countess of Pomfret [see Fermor, Henrietta Louisa], a pair of earrings worth 1,400l. to obtain for Lord Pomfret the post of master of the horse (Walpole, Letters, vol. i. pp. cxli, 115). The princess's attachment to clergymen whom Walpole held to be heterodox was attributed by him to Mrs. Clayton's influence. Benjamin Hoadly [q. v.], afterwards bishop of Winchester, Dr. Alured Clarke (1696–1742) [q. v.], Dr. Samuel Clarke (1675–1729) [q. v.], and Robert Clayton [q. v.], bishop of Killala, a kinsman of her husband, were among Mrs. Clayton's greatest friends. Among literary men to whom she showed attentions were Stephen Duck [q. v.], Steele (Aitken, Life of Richard Steele, ii. 75, 128, 297), Richard Savage [q. v.], and Voltaire, who thanked her for her kindness while he was in England.

Mrs. Clayton became Lady Sundon in 1735, when her husband was raised to the Irish peerage as Baron Sundon of Ardagh. Lord Sundon always sided with the court party in parliament, and his candidature for Westminster in 1741 resulted in a riot, in which his life was endangered. The high bailiff took the unusual step of summoning the military to his aid, and this, upon the re-assembling of parliament, enabled the opposition to deal a successful blow at Walpole. Walpole said that Lord Carteret had in 1735 opened two canals to the queen's ear, Bishop Sherlock and Mrs. Clayton, but hoped to prevent either of them injuring him (Lord Hervey, Memoirs, ii. 128). It is stated in the newspapers of the day that Lady Sundon succeeded Lady Suffolk as mistress of the robes in May 1735; but this alleged promotion, though perhaps contemplated, was not carried out (ib. ii. 203, 336, iii. 300). When Walpole feared that the queen would make a difficulty about Madame Walmoden, the mistress of George II, being brought to England, he said it was ‘those bitches, Lady Pomfret and Lady Sundon,’ who were influencing their mistress, in order to make their court to her.

Walpole told his son Horace that Lady Sundon, in the enthusiasm of her vanity, had proposed that they should unite and govern the kingdom together. Walpole bowed, begged her patronage, but said he knew nobody fit to govern the kingdom but the king and queen (Walpole, Letters, i. 115).

Lady Sundon was very ill at Bath in 1737, during the queen's fatal illness; but Walpole associated Caroline's refusal to receive the sacrament to the influence over her of Lady Sundon and ‘the less believing clergy’ whose cause she espoused (Lord Hervey, Memoirs, ii. 113, 281, iii. 300, 333). After the queen's death Lady Sundon was pensioned. In 1738 she was reported to be dragging on a miserable life, with a ‘cancerous humour in her throat’ (Lady M. W. Montagu, Letters, ii. 27, 55). She died on 1 Jan. 1742. Her husband survived her for ten years (see Walpole, Letters, i. 114).

Though most of Lady Sundon's correspondents flattered and fawned, in the hope of obtaining favours through her influence, it is clear that some of them were real friends. Hoadly speaks of her sincerity and goodness; Lord Bristol said she was ‘a simple woman, and talked accordingly’ (Nichols, Lit. Anecd. v. 87, ix. 592). Horace Walpole calls her ‘an absurd, pompous simpleton’ (Letters, i. pp. cxxx, cxxxii). Hervey's verdict is on the whole extremely favourable. She despised, he says, the dirty company surrounding her, and had not hypocrisy enough to tell them they were white and clean. She took great pleasure in doing good, often for persons who could not repay her. Mrs. Howard and Lady Sundon hated each other ‘very civilly and very heartily’ (Memoirs, i. 89–91).

A number of letters addressed to Lady Sundon from 1714 by aspirants to her favour are in the British Museum (Addit. MSS. 20102–5, 30516); many are printed in Mrs. Thomson's ‘Memoirs of Viscountess Sundon, Mistress of the Robes to Queen Caroline,’ 2 vols. 1847. This title is typical of the general inaccuracy of the work; for Lady Sundon was neither a viscountess nor mistress of the robes. Lady Sundon was not fond of letter-writing, but one letter to the Duchess of Leeds is in the British Museum

Remark: This photograph was taken facing northwest at the southwest corner of the intersection of Second Street and Porter Avenue. The church parsonage is visible to the far right in this image. The parsonage was later moved to a lot located on Park Avenue, just east of Eleventh Street in Chesterton, Indiana, and now serves as a residence. After the parsonage was removed, a parking lot was put into its place.

The church edifice was designed based on a nearly identical design of the Methodist Church located in Flora, Carroll County, Indiana.

METHODISTS TO BUILD HOUSE OF WORSHIP

Indications now are that Chesterton Methodists are to have a house of worship that will be a credit to the community, and to the congregation. For some time a committee of faithful citizens has been laboring hard on the matter of formulating plans for the building of a new church for this congregation, and are at last able to report progress.

Capital life was injected into the undertaking when J. A. Johnson and H. F. Carlson, executors of the estate of the late Par A. Johnson, made the committee a concrete offer. The executors are custodians of a fund left by the late P. A. Johnson, to be disbursed of as in their judgment seems fit, and they submitted a proposition to the church committee offering to donate $20,000 from this fund for the erection of a Methodist church edifice in Chesterton, when the congregation raises an additional $30,000. The committee, consisting of the following well known gentlemen, Charles L. Jeffrey, H. A. Flynn, C. O. Wiltfong, Roger Holcomb, Charles Smith, Ernest Lilywhite and J. A. Johnson, after investigation and consultation, accepted the generous offer.

For some time the committee has been looking up plans for the proposed new church. Many towns were visited and churches inspected. Last Saturday the committee, accompanied by other member of the church and citizens to the number of 46, journeyed to Flora, Ind., and inspected the M. E. church edifice there. After careful inspection it was agreed that a similar building would suit the needs of the congregation here, and after this opinion was made the executors of the estate of Par A. Johnson at a quarterly conference held Monday evening of this week submitted in writing their offer.

Some of the conditions of the offer are that the new building shall be a memorial to Mr. and Mrs. P. A. Johnson. The board accepted the offer and has now set itself to work of collecting the $30,000 needed.

The new building will be erected on land immediately south of the M. E. parsonage, corner of Porter avenue and Second street. Its dimensions will be 75x80 with 17 rooms, to be used for church work and including an auditorium that will seat 450 persons, and arranged so that it many sit 600 by throwing open a connecting room. The edifice will follow the design of the building in Flora.

That the idea is taking form root in the hearts of the public is apparent in the fact that V. U. Young, of Gary, has donated a beautiful pipe organ to the congregation for the new church.

While the edifice is to be used by the M. E. church, it may also be con--?-- the church of the American --?--king protestants of this section. Besides the Lutherans and the Catholics, we have no other churches in Chesterton but the Methodists, Swedish and English. It is where people who belong to other faiths or who have no church affiliations are buried in, are married in if they have a church wedding, and go to when the want to hear the word of God. It may be called "The Little Brown Church Around the Corner." It is God's way ---?--- for the weary and oppressed. It commands the respect and support of all Chesterton needs this new place and it should be considered a privilege to be permitted to subscribe to the fund that will make it doable. The Tribune is heart and mind in the good cause, and commends it to our readers as a worthy cause.

PLANS FOR THE NEW CHURCH ARE PROGRESSING

The Building Committee of the First Methodist church has employed an architect to draw plans and make specifications for the new church. The plans will be completed and in the hands of the committee by July 26. The committee expects to be able to submit the plans for bids on the new church at an early date.

The committee on finance has planned its work to start August first. They expect to complete the work by August 10th.

The work is progressing very satisfactorily to those who have the matter in hand and we believe August 1st will be a day of victory for the congregation of the First Methodist church.

LAY CORNER STONE SUNDAY AFTERNOON

Next Sunday will be a big day in the history of the First Methodist Episcopal church when, at 2:30 in the afternoon, the cornerstone for the new church edifice will be laid with impressive services. Rev. A. E. Bagby will have charge of the services and a general invitation is extended to the public to attend. Some years ago the congregation purchased two lots at the corner of Second street and Porter avenue, and a short time later a handsome parsonage was built on the north lot and the corner reserved for a new church building, when the time came for the erection of such a structure.

The ambitions of the congregation have been realized and a handsome building is now going up on the site, and Sunday afternoon's service will mark the first service for the new structure.

Dr. B. D. Beck, of South Bend, and Rev. E. p. Swan, superintendent of the Chicago district of the Swedish M. E. church will be present and both will take part in the exercises with addresses. The following ministers from a distance have been invited to participate in the services: Rev. C. A. Brown, Rev. F. R. Briggs, Rev. H. V. Deal, Rev. F. O. Fraley and Rev. Charles Roush.

The Methodists began their work in this community in the year 1861, and Elder Daniel A. Grime was the first pastor. On Dec. 15, 1861, Pastor Grime baptized Jearard Whitmore, Mary, his wife, and their son, John. Previous to this date, on Jan. 25, 1861, Grace Pelham, James Asher, Louisa Ingraham and Lovenia C. Shoemaker were received as probationers, the first on the circuit. Louisa Ingraham was living in Calumet (now Chesterton), the others being from the Jackson Center neighborhood.

In those days the meetings were held in the homes and school buildings. The circuit rider came around once or twice a month, holding meetings on Saturday evenings, Sunday morning, Sunday afternoon and Sunday evening. The circuit was made up of McCool, Calumet, Jackson Center, Furnessville and possibly another point or two. McCool's chapel seemed to be at the head of it.

The first wedding ceremony on the circuit was performed by Pastor Grimes on Oct. 22, 1862, the contracting parties being Henry C. Richman, of Chicago, and Mary E. Drew, of Calumet.

As stated above the entire circuit had but four member in 1861. The next year they added three more to their membership and one was dropped from the list. The next year they did better and added five to the list, all of whom proved faithful. A great revival was held in 1866 and there were twenty-four named added to the records. In 1870 the circuit of four churches came into the Northwest Indiana Conference, with a membership of 83, 140 were enrolled in the Sunday school with eleven officers and teachers, and has since been known as the Chesterton circuit.

The congregation has made a steady growth in membership, until today it stands at 273, with a prospect of reaching the 300 mark by Easter Sunday of this year.

The church building at the corner of Second street and Indiana venue, occupied for many years by the congregation, was built in 1865, as a Union church. Later is was deeded to the Methodist church by the trustees. This building, just one room, heated by stoved and lighted with oil lamps, served the congregation until 1913, when under the leadership of Rev. C. A. Brown, it was raised, a basement dug underneath, a heating plant and electric lights put in. This added greatly to the space of the building, giving twice the room it formerly contained. The cost of this work was more than $2,000.

The beautiful parsonage on Second street now enjoyed by the pastor and his family, was built in 1917, at a cost of more than $6,000 under the leadership of Rev. Frank R. Briggs.

Early in 1926, at a meeting of the official board, the matter of a new church was discussed as it had been many times before. After a short discussion it was moved by one of the members of the board that a building committee be appointed to go into the matter and report to the board as to the probable cost of a building suitable to the needs of the congregation. The following committee was appointed: C. L. Jeffrey, J. A. Johnson, Chas. H. Smith, Dr. C. O. Wiltfong, H. A. Flynn, Roger Holcomb and Ernest Lillywhite. The committee organized for the task and Mr. Jeffrey was chosen as chairman, Rev. A. E. Bagby, secretary, and E. L. Morgan treasurer.

Investigations were made regarding a suitable plant a number of churches were visited. Finally a plan was outlined to Architect Stevens, of Huntington, who drew the plans for the new church. At a meeting of the quarterly conference on June 28, 1926, it was unanimously decided to build the new structure, adopting the plans drawn by Mr. Stevens. The contract was let on Aug. 2 to W. R. Dunkin & Son, of Flora, Ind., for the sum of $49,120.

A contract also has been let to Hilgren, Lane & Co., of Alliance, Ohio, for a new pipe organ to be installed in the church at a cost of $5,000. The building is to be completed by Aug. 1st of this year, at which time the congregation expects the building to be ready for dedication.

The following ministers have served the church in Chesterton since its organization in 1861:

D. A. Grimes, C. A. Jesse, Chas. S. Smith, H. C. Weston, B. W. Smith, J. S. Wright, M. B. Wood, A. G. Deutch, J. W. Harris, B. H. Beall, D. G. Lesourd, A. L. Umpleby, W. W. Jones, J. T. Stafford, J. Harrison, C. O. Smock, E. A. Andrew, Fred H. Clutton, Levi Moore, Glenn Wishard, J. B. Smith, J. E. Wilson, Wm. Crapp, C. A. Brown, Z. Lambert, F. R. Briggs, Wm. West, H. V. Deal, H. A. Lawrence, A. CORNERSTONE LAID SUNDAY OF NEW CHURCH

A crowd of several hundred persons stood in the mist with bowed heads Sunday afternoon as simple and impressive ceremony of laying the cornerstone of the First Methodist Episcopal church in Chesterton was performed.

Intermittent spurts of rain throughout the morning and early afternoon had threatened to result in postponement of he service but shortly before the ceremony was started the sun appeared and shone like a benediction over the scene and disappeared behind the cloud again when the service was completed.

Rev. A. E. Bagby, pastor of the church, marked the laying of the stone. The dedication sermon was delivered by Rev. B. D. Beck, superintendent of the South Bent district. The congregation attended the service overflowed the intersection of 2nd street and Porter avenue.

The program started with community singing of the hymn, "I Love Thy Church, O God," led by members of the church choir, accompanied by the congregation and spectators who attended the ceremony.

Following this the ceremony of marking the stone was performed by Rev. Bagby.

Rev. Beck's sermon was concerned with the meaning behind the ceremony of the cornerstone and he briefly traced the history and symbolism of the rite which he said has come down with religious practice throughout the ages.

The elements of sacrifice and endeavor are predominantly symbolized in ceremony, the speaker said. In early times the sacrificial element was emphasized with the offering of human life, but with later enlightenment this was abandoned but the element of sacrifice is still preserved in a changed but no less real form, he said.

Christ is the chief cornerstone of life, the speaker declared, and he represents the strength, beauty and endeavor toward which all should strive.

Rev. E. P. Swan, superintendent of the Chicago district of the Swedish M. E. church, and other ministers were to have attended the ceremony but the inclemency of the weather forced them to cancel the engagement.

The building is expected to be completed by August when the dedication services will be held. The basement and first floor now are finished and the structure will be two stories high. It is estimated he total cost will be close to $60,000. The church will be equipped with a $5,000 pipe organ, a $2,000 thermostat control, a ventilation system that will cost $700 to install and improved lighting fixtures valued at several hundred dollars.

The church now has a membership of 273 but with the enrollment of a new class at Easter, it is expected the membership will be increased to 300.

With the approval of the official board of jurisdiction of the appointment of the building committee the first steps toward erecting the structure were taken early in 1926. The building committee was comprised of C. I. Jeffrey, J. A. Johnson, Dr. C. O. Wiltfong, H. A. Flynn, Roger Holcomb, Charles H. Smith and Ernest Lillywhite.

Cl. L. Jeffrey, E. L. Morgan and Rev. Bagby were chosen executive heads by the group and it was through the endeavors of the members of the committee and the executive heads that the success which has attended the undertaking was achieved.

The general contract was let to W. R. Dunkin and Sons of Flora, Ind., at a figure just under $50,000 and the excavation work was started last July.

Incased in the stone was a copper box 7x8x10 inches donated by Claude Williams and the following articles were placed within the box before being sealed up: Conference minutes of Northwest Indiana conference for 1926, Official Board Roll, names of building committee, names of officers and teachers of Sunday school, history of the church, report of Ladies' Aid, reports of Men's Aid and program of Men's Aid shows 1927, copy of Boy Scout movement, copy of Western Christian Advocate, April 2, 1927, a copy of Chesterton Tribune of March 31, 1927, population of town 2,000, bank statement of the Chesterton bank, membership roll, the pastor's bible, one that he purchased while at college, pictures of Mr. and Mrs. Par A. Johnson, copy of Methodist Discipline, 1924, Methodist Hymnal donated by Mrs. J. Castleman, Cradle Roll and the names of all the pastors that have served the church.

Rev. A. P. Hardt, of St. John's church attended the exercises and offered the prayer and Rev. Wacknitz, of Porter, gave the benediction.

In the list of ministers published in our last issue the names of two who had been in the service were omitted. They were Rev. John Ayling and Rev. O. P. Berry.

LOCAL-SOCIAL-PERSONAL

W. R. Dunkin & Son, who have the contract for the new Methodist church building are making rapid progress on the work and the new edifice will be ready for dedication early in August. The outside work has been practically completed and roofers started putting on the shingles Tuesday morning, laying a heavy asbestos shingle that is fire-resisting and should last for many years. The contract has been awarded for 220 individual church chairs for the auditorium and 72 opera chairs in the balcony. Room for 86 will be made in the young people's room. A layer of celotex will be laid between the false floor and the hardwood flooring of the auditorium as a noise-deadener and all outside walls will have a coat of water-proofing on the inside. Four built-in cupboards for books and Sunday school supplied will be placed in various parts of the building.

MANY ATTEND M. E. CHURCH DEDICATION

Last Sunday, October 9th, was a day of victory and rejoicing for the people of Chesterton, and especially the people of the Methodist church. The church building that is to be the home of the members and friends of the Methodist church was dedicated to the Service of God by beautiful ritual ceremony.

Bishop F. D. Leete, D. D., L.L. D., of Indianapolis, the Bishop of this Episcopal area, was present for this happy occasion and preached two wonderful sermons, one at 10:30 o'clock in the morning and another at 2:30 o'clock in the afternoon.

The morning service was brought to a happy climax when the pastor, Rev. A. E. Bagby, announced that the new building cost $65,100, and that $2,000 was needed to cover the cost of the building. About twenty minutes was used in securing pledges -- the congregation giving in cash and pledges, $1,915. After the Bishop's sermon in the afternoon, pledges were again called for by the pastor and more than enough to make the $2,000 was secured.

(Maurice first appears in the Apethorpe records in the 1660s. He was the Bailiff to the Earl of Westmorland at Apethorpe Hall. His eldest son, also called Maurice, continued in the role of Bailiff, after his father. In the 1730s son Maurice rented nearby Biggin Hall, next to the village of Benefield The family seemed to have acted as both executors and agents of the estate, tenants of parts of it, and to have lived in the house. This odd relationship continued until the 1820s when the house was sold to the Watts-Russell.)

Sometimes known as Married Women’s Deeds or Acknowledgement of Deeds by Married Women. A Document to record that a Wife was of full age, competent to understand, had been examined apart from her husband and voluntarily consented to the sale of Land and Property. The main intention was to ensure that a wife could not claim the right of Dower from the purchaser after her husband’s death. Single women and Widows had the right to own properties in their own right so were not covered by this 1833 Act.

The Declaration: Sometimes this first declaration could be signed by someone other than an Attorney and Commissioner (Gentleman, Farmer etc) who knew the woman. Normally it was signed by an Attorney who was a Commissioner of the Court of Common pleas. Then signed by a second Commissioner who declared he had no knowledge or interest in the transaction and as far as he was aware neither did the first Commissioner. Sometimes the document would also be signed by another Commissioner (for Oaths) or by a Judge in his Chambers.

A second document, the Certificate, gave the names of the two Commissioners, wife and husband. A précis of the Indenture connected to the sale was given, naming all who were named in the indenture.

Sometimes the document would also be signed by another Commissioner (for Oaths) or by a Judge in his Chambers.
