Mespelbrunn Castle is a late-medieval/early-Renaissance moated castle on the territory of the town of Mespelbrunn, between Frankfurt and Würzburg, built in a tributary valley of the Elsava valley, within the Spessart forest. It is a popular tourist attraction and has become a famous Spessart landmark.
The first precursor of Mespelbrunn Castle was a simple house. The owner was Hamann Echter, vizedom of Aschaffenburg, a title which means that he was the representative of the ruling prince, the Archbishop of Mainz Johann von Nassau-Wiesbaden-Idstein (de) at the castle and town of Aschaffenburg. On 1 May 1412, Johann gave the site, a forest clearing next to a pond, to Echter, a knight, who constructed a house without fortifications. It was a reward for Echter's services against the Czechs. The Echter family (de) originates from the Odenwald region. Their name presumably means "der die Acht vollstreckt", the executor of the ostracism. In the 15th century the Spessart was a wild and unexploited virgin forest, used as a hideout by bandits and Hussites, who despoiled the regions nearby. Therefore, in 1427 Hamann Echter, the son of the first owner, began to rebuild his father's house to a fortified castle with walls, towers, and a moat using the nearby lake.
In 1957, Mespelbrunn Castle was one of the locations of the German film Das Wirtshaus im Spessart (The Spessart Inn, 1958), based on the novella by Wilhelm Hauff.

GM Holden Aust, Woodwork shop: Cocktail Cabinet, 1937 (AGSA)
The artisans in the General Motors Holden Australia Woodwork shop (Woodville, SA; established 1924) made this
Cocktail cabinet, in 1937, out of Tasmanian oak, with chromed steel handle mounts.
It came to the Art Gallery as a gift of the Executors of the Estate of Sir Laurence Hartnett in 1986.
The story told by an Art Gallery Staff Member was that when the shop closed the artisans working there decided to use up all the wood in store and this was one of the objects they made. I love how it looks like a car, as if these guys couldn’t ‘see’ any other shape, no matter that its function was as a cocktail cabinet, and a very handsome one too.

A view of Gillette Castle in Hadlyme, Connecticut. Shot with the Olympus E-M1, Mark II.
William Hooker Gillette, noted actor, director, and playwright, built this one hundred and eighty-four acre estate along the hills of Hadlyme, Connecticut overlooking the Connecticut River, Built of local fieldstone supported by a steel framework, it took twenty men five years (1914-1919), to complete the main structure.
Purchased by the State of Connecticut in 1943 from the executors of Mr. Gillette's will, Gillette Castle and the adjoining property with its fine woodlands, trails, and vistas are now administered for the enjoyment of present and future generations.

2024 is bringing war conflicts where, what was previously science fiction, has become a type of modern war, where the only thing missing is aliens. My wish for this year is that war stays in the movies... We all need peace right now.

1. “The Grange” Robinson-Adamson House
(c. 1828) 1821 Dundas Street W.
The Grange, also known at the Robinson-Adamson House after its first and last private owners, was built around 1828 for Sir John Beverley Robinson, the first Chief Justice of Upper Canada.
It is believed that the house served as a summer retreat, hunting lodge, and early administrative office for Robinson, who had been appointed Executor of Indian Land Sales in Toronto Township. Over the years the house has served as a family residence for Colonel William Thompson, Dr. Beaumont Dixie, Weymouth Schreiber and Harry Adamson. The building was donated to the City of Mississauga in 1978, and today is home to Heritage Mississauga. This Designated heritage building is recognized by the Ontario Heritage Trust as a fine example of Ontario Regency construction.
Taken in Tatton Hall, Tatton Park.
Tatton Park is a historic estate in Cheshire, England, to the north of the town of Knutsford. It contains a mansion, Tatton Hall, a manor house dating from medieval times, Tatton Old Hall, gardens, a farm and a deer park of 2,000 acres (8.1 km2). It is a popular visitor attraction and hosts over 100 events annually. The estate is owned by the National Trust, who administer it jointly with Cheshire East Council. Since 1999 it has hosted an annual horticultural show.
There is evidence of human habitation in the area of the estate going back to the Iron Age. In medieval times the village of Tatton was on the site. This has since disappeared but the area of the village and its roadways are a Scheduled Ancient Monument.[1] By the end of the 15th century the estate was owned by the Stanley family who built and occupied the Old Hall. By the 1580s this building had been enlarged and it was owned by the Brereton family. In 1598 the estate was bought by Sir Thomas Egerton, Lord Chancellor of England. Sir Thomas and his children rarely visited the estate and it was loaned to tenants. At the end of the 17th century the estate was owned by John Egerton, Sir Thomas' grandson, who built a new house on the site of the present mansion, some 0.75 miles (1 km) to the west of the Old Hall. This mansion, Tatton Hall, was extensively altered and extended between 1780 and 1813. In 1795 the estate covered 251,000 acres (1,020 km2) (392 sq.miles). The estate remained in the ownership of the Egerton family until the last Lord Egerton died without issue in 1958. He left the house to the National Trust and gave them the park in lieu of death duties. However, as the estate itself was sold by his executors, Cheshire County Council committed to a 99-year lease in place of an endowment to ensure that it was preserved for the benefit of the nation.[2] The Trust's ownership (run now by Cheshire East Council) is some 2,000 acres (8.1 km2) (3.1 sq.miles). The Hall and Park have been developed into a visitor attraction on an increasingly commercial basis, which has caused significant controversy in particular with the recent BeWilderWood proposals.

I have been in Gloucester visiting my brother and clearing the family home which is an immense undertaking. Tuesday morning Peter and I went into the City for coffee, into the bank as part of my executor duties and then into the Cathedral so I could take some photos. Everyone, it seems, has their favourite cathedral and mine is most definitely Gloucester.
It was built as a Benedictine monastery, work commenced in 1089. It survived Henry VIII's abolition of monasteries as Edward II had been buried there . . . so it became a cathedral.

The St. Nicholas Hotel is a historic hotel building located in downtown Springfield. The original building of the St. Nicholas Hotel was constructed in 1855, and no longer exists. A 6-story annex, seen here to the right of the main building, was built on the hotel in 1910, and the current 11-story main building was constructed in 1924.
The Georgian Revival-style main building was designed by the New York City architectural firm H.L. Stevens and Company. When the current main building opened, it was the second-tallest building in Springfield after the State Capitol.
During sessions of the Illinois General Assembly, the St. Nicholas Hotel became a meeting place for Illinois politicians. The hotel has hosted many notable visitors to Springfield, including U.S. Presidents Harry S. Truman, Dwight D. Eisenhower, and John F. Kennedy.
In Illinois political lore, the St. Nicholas is best known as the residence of Paul Powell during his tenure from 1965 to 1970 as Illinois Secretary of State. Within days after his death in 1970, the executor of Powell's will found $750,000 in cash stored in shoeboxes, briefcases, and strongboxes in Powell's suite. Another $50,000 was found in his office. As the money greatly exceeded Powell's salary, which was at the most $30,000 per year, a federal investigation examined Powell's behavior while in office. The investigation determined that Powell had acquired the money via illegal cash bribes and led to the imprisonment of several state contractors.
The hotel was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1983, and also is a contributing building to the Central Springfield Historic District. Today this historic hotel building is now the St. Nicholas Apartments.
