14-The Brandenburg Prison execution room, a reminder that 1,700+ political victims of the Nazi regime were executed here. This sign is still from the East German times, they preferred the term antifascist vice Nazi.

Visit to Museum of London Docklands to see the 'Executions' exhibition. The first publicly recorded executions at Tyburn was in 1196; the last public execution in 1868. By the end of the 18th century over 200 crimes were punishable by death.

from Tour Through the Whole Island of Great Britain (1727):

The force of this engine is so strong, the head of the ax being loaded with a weight of lead to make it fall heavy, and the execution is so sure, that it takes away all possibility of its failing to cut off the head; and to this purpose, the Hallifax people tell you another story of a country woman, who was riding by upon her doffers or hampers to Hallifax Market, for the execution was always on a market day (the third after the fact) and passing just as the ax was let fall upon the neck of the criminal, it chopt it thro' with such force, that the head jumpt off into one of her hampers, and that the woman not perceiving it, she carry'd it away to the market.

All the use I shall make of this unlikely story, is this, that it seems executions were so frequent, that it was not thought a sight worth the peoples running out to see; that the woman should ride along so close to the scaffold, and that she should go on, and not so much as stop to see the ax fall, or take any notice of it. But those difficulties seem to be much better solved, by saying, that 'tis as reasonable to think the whole tale is a little Yorkshire, which, I suppose, you will understand well enough.

Prince Edward Island: Charles Bray took this picture of Execution Block in the White Tower at Woodleigh. In Britain, beheading was introduced during the reign of William the Conqueror for the execution of Waltheof, Earl of Northumberland in 1076. It was confined to those of noble birth who were convicted of treason, or in a very few cases murder. Several members of Royalty were beheaded, including Charles 1st, Anne Boleyn, Mary Queen of Scots and Lady Jane Grey. Many other Earls, Lords and Knights, including Sir Walter Raleigh, and even some Bishops were beheaded. The majority of English beheadings took place at the Tower of London. Seven were carried out in private within the grounds, of which 5 were of women and just over 100 on Tower Hill outside the walls of the Tower, where there stood a permanent scaffold from 1485. Only a very small number of beheadings were carried out elsewhere, as the Tower was the principal prison for traitors. It should be noted that treason often meant displeasing the monarch, rather than in any way betraying the country. The spot indicated as "The site of the scaffold" on Tower Green which visitors can see today was not used for all of the 7 private beheadings although the plaque implies this.

Those beheaded in private on Tower Green were Lord Hastings in 1483, Anne Boleyn on the 19th of May 1536, Margaret Pole, Countess of Salisbury on the 28th of May 1541, Catherine Howard and her Lady in Waiting, Jane, Viscountess Rochford on the 13th of February 1542, Lady Jane Grey on the 15th of February 1554 and Robert Devereux, Earl of Essex on the 25th of February 1601.

Three Anti-treaty IRA men from Wexford were among 77 prisoners executed by firing squad by the Irish Free State during the Irish Civil War 1922-1923. They were executed at this spot.

Registan (a sandy place): this public square was the centre of Samarkand and the site of a large market. It came to be used as the place where royal proclamations were made, public executions held, and trade & commerce conducted. In the 15th and 17th centuries, madrassas were built on three sides of the square. This design, madrasas facing each other across a square or street, is called a kosh, a "double, pair", as the building of madrasas are opposite each other on the sides of the street or square.

Patron: Ulugh Beg (Mīrzā Muhammad Tāraghay bin Shāhrukh) 1394-1449 (assassinated by his son), a Timurid sultan (r.1447–1449), grandson of Timur (Tamerlane) (1336–1405), as well as a famous astronomer and mathematician.

Execution Rocks Lighthouse is located in Long Island Sound. Legend has it that the British used to chain prisoners to the rocks at low tide and wait for them to drown as the tide came in. The lighthouse was built in the 1840's and recently handed over to a non-profit for restoration. It is a 30 minute boat ride away from the shore, and has no electricity or running water, plus it is rumored to be haunted.

The hunter, hiding in the bushes, shot down a Canada Goose as it flew over. The goose was only wounded and could not fly, but it tried to run. Standing well behind the fearsome beast the mighty hunter shot it again, then carried the corpse off in triumph, to feed his starving family.

Execution chamber of Plötzensee Prison, built in 1870s, and used by Nazi courts to eliminate enemies of the state. Between 1933 and 1945 nearly 2,900 people, mostly members of German and foreign resistance groups, were put to death by guillotine or by being hanged from meat hooks set on a steel beam. They included 89 conspirators and helpers involved in the failed 20 July 1944 bomb plot against Hitler.

Keynote speaker waiting in the wings. Her talk exemplified the difference between the more business oriented side of our organization and the service emphasis. Even so I seriously disagreed with her premise and her execution. She started off by urging us to become perfectionists—perfect home office, perfect closets, what have you. (In my experience if your confidence comes from how tidy your own office is you are likely to run late because still tidying something.)

Then she wanted us to maximize our profits by targeting the clients who paid the best and gave us the least trouble so forget the chronically disorganized; we want clients who are ready for change. That's what all the go getter organizers say.

She proceeded to give us her own business example of how she discovered that her best clients went to a certain country club so she asked to meet with a client there, which then gave her the opportunity to greet several other clients who were dining there. This was supposed to create buzz about who she herself was that she knew so many people at this exclusive club. Now if you are an organizer who has pledged confidentiality what would you be doing outing all your clients at their country club? But we were to take it that what she did was more akin to interior design so no shame in that.

She also used someone else's success as a jumping off point which I dislike in print stories as well. She had us all gather around her laptop so we could watch the latest miracle performer, Paul Potts, but the way she pronounced his name I kept thinking Pol Pot. Anyway the point of that was to encourage us to let out our inner genius.

To end she told a little anecdote on herself just to show she wasn't a perfectionist after all, but it was a very strange story about how she was all dressed up for a ball (emphasis on the perfect outfit) and ended up running into a plate glass window in front of the entire party. Presumably she bounced off, but she didn't say what the outcome was.

She was a good speaker in that she was extremely confident and high energy, moved well and had presence. But she lacked substance and her talk was very formulaic. It had all the ingredients, but no real narrative thread to hold it together; she was just stringing together stories to complete the formula. It was interesting to have that illustrated for me. It showed me that a keynote speech is a lot like an essay. And it doesn't take much to perform one, but you get paid a lot for these "inspirational" talks so speakers are always aspiring to be the keynote.

December Murders refers to the murders on 8 December 1982, of 15 prominent young Surinamese men who criticized the then military dictatorship in Suriname. These 15 men were arrested on December 7 between 2 AM and 5 AM in their houses while sleeping (according to the stories told by the family of the victims) by soldiers of dictator Desi Bouterse
