With nothing better to do I got on my bike and rode over to the M3 to see what was heading south on a seemingly rare sunny afternoon (02/06/2024). As it was a Sunday I wasn't expecting much to pass me in the 90 minutes I was there but to my surprise I managed to snap coaches from the Netherlands, Germany and Switzerland as well as the more predictable stuff. At least it got me out of the gardening.

Excelsior began making penny-farthings way back in 1874 and added motor cycles to their brand in 1896. The Autobyks provided cheap transport to post war Britain with their economical 98cc Villiers or Excelsior's own engines but by 1962 the company was only producing two models, with production ending in 1965. Another classic British marque lost to history.

Named as such during a flood in the very early 1900s. The street only travel was by boat. This is not a post card, this is where I live.

The biggest spiral staircase I’ve ever seen. Six complete revolutions!

No way was I going to climb it, though. This place is in advanced decay, and a staircase collapse could easily be fatal, even if it happened while I was only a few steps up.

After I got home I found an urbex website with photos from the top someone had taken five or six years ago. That photographer didn’t get into specifics, but I think his balls must be substantially larger and/or more numerous than mine.

It's that time of year when I put the camera away and get the scanner back out. This winter I will be scanning some Excelsior of Bournemouth stuff from the late 1980s and early to mid 1990s. Here are some of the coaches seen at the Bournemouth depot in April 1992.

The MV Excelsior in Osborne, near Adelaide's Outer Harbor. The Excelsior worked as a coal hulk to service steamer dredges working in Port Adelaide in the 1930s.

The Belt of Venus, Venus's Girdle, twilight wedge, or antitwilight arch is an atmospheric phenomenon visible shortly before sunrise or after sunset, during civil twilight, when a pinkish glow extending roughly 10–20° above the horizon surrounds the observer.

Work-in-progess USS Excelsior model from Star Trek, built in LDD. Quite pleased with the shape of the secondary hull and the warp drives, not so sure about the top of the saucer. If anyone has any ideas for improvements I'd love to hear them.

It was back to Wembley today (26/05/2024) for the EFL Championship Play-off Final between Leeds United and Southampton. Just over 200 coaches turned up on what proved to be a largely sunny day, despite the day long forecast of showers!

Thanks go to BM for the regular updates from the North!

Happy Thanksgiving! Here, we have Stan Lee giving a toast at a dinner party (probably hosted by Tony Stark), featuring Spider-Man, Batman, Iron-Man, and Captain America! Excelsior, true believers! 'Nuff said...

Heathside Travel of Ferndown in Dorset sent their 2 month old Irizar i6s Y25HST to London today (18/08/2025). I was alerted to its return trip down the M3 past Farnborough by driver Nathan Singers so thanks go to him for the opportunity to tick another one off the list!

Also passing were demo Neoplan OY25ZHC (currently on loan to Heathside Travel), Lucketts BG22NTF, Excelsior BU74YVF and National Express BV72XFO.

Seen in Poole in April 1989 is Excelsior of Bournemouth Volvo B10M-61 / Van Hool Alizee C46FT XEL24. This coach was new in 1987 and started life allocated to Excelsior's Munda of Ostend operation registered GPL-066. The coach arrived in the UK for the 1988 season where it gained the XEL24 mark previously carried by the Plaxton Paramount 4000 coach new in 1984. The Van Hool would depart the Excelsior fleet as E455SEL in early 1992.

Just to keep us on our toes, the XEL24 would then be carried by similar Van Hool E304OPR before moving on to a series of Plaxton coaches.
